Course Objectives. The aim of this course is to 1. Train the students on practicing 'statistical thinking' throughout their daily life. 2. Acquaint the students with the basic knowledge of statistics such as: Methods of descriptive statistics, Sampling techniques, the basic concepts of probability, Random variables and their probability distributions, Sampling distribution, Methods of inferential statistics, Simple linear regression. 3. Train the students to use statistical packages and/or scientific calculators in practical application s of statistics. Learning Outcomes. At the end of this course students should be able to: 1. Use the statistical thinking in his daily life as needed. 2. Define statistics, collect and organize data, describe data via descriptive measures, calculate probability of events and the probability distribution of a discrete random variable, find the sampling distribution, draw statistical inferences about mean and proportion of a statistical population 3. Formulate and solve some basic inferential statistical problems. 4. Interpret the statistical results and conclusions

4 5. Use statistical packages and/or calculators to analyze data. Matrix outcomes and objectives Objective Learning Outcome Assessment Methods Train the students on practicing 'statistical thinking' throughout their daily life. Acquaint the students with the basic knowledge of statistics such as: Methods of descriptive statistics, Sampling techniques, the basic concepts of probability, Random variables and their probability distributions, Sampling distribution, Methods of inferential statistics, Simple linear regression. 5 Grading System Your final grade will be calculated according to the equation: Final Grade(FG)=Homewroks(15%)+Mid Term I (20%)+Mid Term II(20%)+ Final Exam(40%)+Participation (5%). According to the grading system of Qatar university, a letter will be assigned to your final grade according to the following grading system: Percent Grading Scale Letter Grade A B + B C + C D + D F Example. If your FG is 83, the letter B will be assigned to your grade. Classroom Policies 1. No special treatment or project will be given to anyone 2. Always bring your book and scientific calculator to classroom. Scientific calculator are very important to your exams. 3. Put your mobile phone in silent mode in both exams and classroom. Don t use your mobile phone inside the class. 4. Don t talk during the lecture unless you are asked to during 6. don t leave lecture early 7. don t sleep, be prepared and attentive 8. Participate positively and constructively in class 9. Attendance of classes is mandatory What Do You Expect From Me 1. To uphold the regulations of this syllabus 2. To follows the rules and instructions of Qatar

6 3. To be present, prepared and attentive during each class 4. To work hard to make this course enjoyable, informative, challenging and interesting What I Expect From You 1. Take an active role in learning the material presented in classroom and lab. 2. Remember and understand the material best in exams and when solving questions. 3. Read the chapters before classes 4. Ask me questions through my office hours 5. Follow the regulation and instruction in this syllabus and also the regulations of Qatar university. 6. You should visit the Blackboard in a regular bases for more information, material and Announcements. 7. Don t come late to the classroom or exams 9. When you miss a class, you are responsible for obtaining the information of that class Exams And Assignments Exams: 1. No mathematical proofs or math derivations are in exams 2. I will not answer any question concerning the exams through the exam time. 3. Don t talk to other students through the exam, I may interpret this as cheating. 4. No make-up exams under any conditions 5. Instructor will notify the students by the day and the time of the exam via the blackboard(bb). 6. Final exam is comprehensive Assignments: 1. Assignment should be typed using MS word. A Hard copy of the assignment should be handed out to the instructor. I don t accept soft copies of assignments. 2. The students should work on their assignments independently. 3. I don't accept assignments after its due date. 4. No exceptions will be granted for any student Academic Honesty Qatar University requires and expects the academic honesty from all members of its community. Here are some example of academic dishonesty: 1. Cheating. Using an unauthorized material or even attempting to use it. 2. Plagiarism. Using the words of the others as if they were your own.

7 3. Multiple submission. Same assignments are submitted to two different courses without taking the permission from the instructors. 4. Material Misuse. The abuse of an unauthorized material. Plagiarism Definition. Plagiarism is simply defined as presentation of others' ideas as your own, even if this occurs deliberately or by chance (Fowler, 1986). Why You Should Avoid Plagiarism? 1.
