1 Lahore University of Management Sciences HIST 222 Alexander: The Great And The Hellenistic World Spring Instructor: JAMES BERESFORD Office: 239-C New SS Wing Office hours: **** or by appointment Alexander II of Macedon ( BC) is justifiably considered one of the most famous men in world history, forging a vast empire that ran from Greece through the Middle East to Pakistan. The course focuses on aspects such as Alexander s wide ranging military campaigns; his programme of city building and colonisation; the orientalizing factors at work in the court and army; and the mixture of Mediterranean, Persian and South Asian cultures that allowed literature, philosophy, art and architecture to mingle and evolve in radically new directions. Students will also be provided with an understanding of how Alexander s short life transformed the ancient world, bringing an end to Classical Greek culture but initiating the Hellenistic period when numerous successor states were carved out of the vast geographical expanse that had been conquered by the young Macedonian king. Even after Alexander s death, his legacy of conquest and empire building, together with the romantic tales of his exploits, would exert a huge influence across Europe and the Middle East. The remarkable Hellenistic kingdoms and empires which emerged following the death of Alexander would spread Greek culture from Italy to the Indus, and influenced the rapidly expanding power of Rome that, with the death of Cleopatra of Egypt in 30 BC, finally brought an end to this remarkable period of history. The course will provide an insight into one of the most significant figures in world history whose unrivalled abilities as a brilliant general, a ruthless king, a skilled administrator, and a romantic adventurer, have excited the interest of countless generations. Alexander s life forever changed the trajectory of world history, and the second half of the course will allow students to examine how the Hellenistic states that rose from out of Alexander s empire continued to transform the societies spread across the Middle East, South Asia and Europe.
