1 A Bladen Community College Campus Weekly. Vol. VI, No. 9 March 6, 2014 BCC, FSU ink agreement Officials from Bladen Community College and Fayetteville State University signed an agreement Tuesday that will continue to offer students in BCC s Early Childhood program an opportunity to earn their bachelor s degree through FSU. This renews an agreement that expires this year and provides a pathway that streamlines the process of obtaining the four-year degree. Students may enroll simultaneously in both institutions prior to completing their associate degree at BCC. Under the program students can complete requirements for earning an Associate of Applied Science in School-Age Education at BCC while earning a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at FSU. The agreement also allow students to complete a bachelor s degree in Birth through Kindergarten Education at Fayetteville State. For information on this opportunity, call a BCC counselor at Signing agreement BCC President Dr. William Findt, center, and FSU Provost Dr. John Young, sign the agreement as, from left, Dr. Leontye L. Lewis, FSU Dean of School of Education; Dr. Pricilla Leggett, FSU Elementary Education Department Chair (back); BCC Executive Vice President Jeff Kornegay; BCC Associate Vice President for Student Services Barry Priest; and FSU Director, Teacher Education Sherry Herring observe. From the office of the Executive Vice President The much anticipated Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) was approved by the State Board of Community Colleges and the UNC Board of Governors on February 21, The agreement includes revisions to the Associate in Arts and Associate in Science curriculum standards and changes to the Transfer Course list. Changes to the CAA will impact every curriculum program at BCC. Deans and Department Chairs begin working on changes associated with the CAA in January. These changes will be approved by the BCC Curriculum Advisory Committee (CAC) in March. Once approved locally, program changes will be sent electronically o NCCCS for final approval. Regional CAA information sessions conducted by the CAA Review Steering Committee, Transfer Advisory Committee, and administrators from NCCCS and UNC General Administration will be held during the months of March and April. A delegation from BCC will attend a meeting at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford on April 11. A request to revise the Career and College Promise College Transfer Pathways will be presented to the State Board of Community Colleges later in March. This upcoming change will impact our Career and College Promise Transfer Pathways. Instead of four pathways there will be two, Associate in Arts and Associate in Science. Learning Enhancement Center Tutoring Services Are you having difficulty with any of your courses or do you know of a student who is having problems? If so, BCC s tutoring program can help. It is designed specifically to help students who may be struggling with one or more subjects get the help they need to succeed. Tutoring assistance is available in virtually all curriculum courses offered at BCC. Tutoring provides small-group/review sessions for sections of courses that offer difficult content or have high levels of failure and withdrawal rates. Peer leaders guide students on how to learn course content. Walk-in individual and group tutoring provides peer assistance for a wide range of disciplines and courses. Walk-in tutoring in the Open Math Lab provides assistance for all DMA courses. In photo at right is Nikki Gillespie who has worked in the LEC for almost two semesters as a tutor and now a lab facilitator. In her role she Nikke Gillespie welcomes students who enter the center and delights in assisting them with their courses. Students seeking courage to complete an assignment will find it in the LEC when they ask Ms. Gillespie. Nikki conveys a nurturing spirit as she responds to student questions. If you seek understanding with maneuvering your way in Moodle, organizing an essay, taking good notes, or becoming a better student, stop by and visit Ms. Gillespie in the LEC. Felisa Williams Class on death and dying to be offered 2nd eight weeks Planning for the end of life can be difficult. As a society, we have tried to avoid the concept of death. This eight-week course will openly discuss death and dying and is designed to introduce students to death and dying as a sociological phenomenon. This course will use discussion and critical thinking to approach the subject from biological, psychological, interpersonal, and cultural avenues to broaden the meaningfulness of this event. (Yes, death is an event.) Rarely do we have the opportunity to think about and talk about death as a topic of intellectual interest. That is the point of this class. We will examine all dimensions of death; some From the Green Committee Although it doesn't feel much like spring, it is technically spring break season. This most recent blast of cold air suggests that winter is not gonna go away without a fight. Apparently the best piece of advice for someone who wants to have a spring break that actually feels like spring is: Go to Miami. 5 BCC basketball team season ends The BCC men s basketball team finished their season on Saturday, March 1, with the second best record in the conference. Having to play back-to-back games in order to make it to the championship game, the Eagles showed great heart and determination before falling in the championship game to a Lumberton team that was well rested. Led by team captain Steven Jacobs, who led the conference in rebounds per game, and Semaj Jessup, the speedy point guard, the Eagles have a lot to be proud of for the season. Their coach, Jerry McDowell, said he is very proud of the team s performance. In photo at left, the team plays in one of the last games of the season. Tidbits from the Diversity Committee Belarus, perhaps better known in many parts of the world as White Russia, is a country of less than 10 million residents that borders Russia. Like many of the Eastern European and middle Asian countries once a part of the Soviet Union, it gained independence with the breakup of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. The primary religion of the country is Christianity with the largest denomination being Eastern Orthodox. The country also is home to Roman Catholics, Protestant denominations, Jews and Muslims. Belarusian and Russian are the official languages of Belarus. Kathy McGurgan United Way Campaign Appreciation Lunch

6 Fighting propane fires Fighting LP fires Firefighters from around Bladen likely had some of BCC s neighbors nervous Saturday evening as they participated in a live fire practical associated with a non-certification LP Gas Fire Suppression class. The live fire practical is required in order to receive a satisfactory grade in the class. A 500-gallon residential LP Gas tank prop was used in the live fire exercise. The tank was ignited and firefighters had to approach the burning LP Gas tank in an attempt to suppress flames. While suppressing the flames, firefighters slowly approach the tank to reach the relief valve to cut off the supply of gas. This type of non-certification live burn training is vital to firefighters. In a live burn class, firefighters are able to practice situations in a more realistic environment. This allows them to better serve the citizens and safely handle LP Gas incidents. Thanks to the Dublin Fire Department for providing the LP Gas, Cape Fear Propane for providing an LP Gas truck with driver on-site for the duration of the class, and to Bladen County EMS for providing rescue personal in the event of injuries.
