1 Hollycombe Primary School KS1 & 2 Long Term Maths Planning Children will be taught according to stage, not age. For some children, this will mean that they are taught with a different group of children. Every half term, one week is reserved for areas of learning as requiring more time this will be the responsibility of the teacher to plan for using the new curriculum and assessment documentation. The weeks that flexible streaming will be incorporated into the lessons are highlighted. Any children that need to work on the attainment targets in a different class will be moved for the whole week. TAs will be flexible and will move to different classes if the numbers are not equal. Separate interventions will continue to take part for specific children.
2 How do maths lessons work? Children are taught to the stage at which they are working. For some children, this will mean that they need to consolidate previous work as it is not yet secure or they may need to move onto something more advanced if they fully understand the work in their class. Children will go into an appropriate class to support their next steps of learning. This will result in some children moving around the school to access high quality teaching suited to their individual needs. Most maths lesson start with a warm up game, referred to as a starter. This is sometimes linked to the work that will be done during the lesson, but often isn t. It is a good way to assess prior knowledge and warm up our brains! Children will receive teaching input appropriate to their stage of learning. This results in lots of small group input as well as whole class teaching to ensure that your child has their next steps learning needs met. Children will do a range of written, practical and verbal learning in the form of calculations, games, problem solving, word problems and mental maths. In some classes they will work in appropriate groupings for the tasks they have. Every child works regularly with an adult and can access help at any point during the lesson. Testing of your children is not always done in a formal way and many assessments take place each week without them knowing! This can be in the form of problem solving tasks, games and occasionally written tests. Every week an assessment of some form will take place. Lessons end in different ways. Sometimes a plenary will include answering questions and clearing up misconceptions but when appropriate, the lesson may be carried forward and your child will be encouraged to think about an aspect of learning in preparation for the following lesson.
