5 Graduate Profiles Adeolu-Ayodeji Adelodun Information Systems and Management, Nigeria The flexibility of the University of London International Programmes allowed me to combine travels, work and family with my studies very easily. Studying the Information Systems and Management has improved my knowledge and awareness of the use of information data in my environment, my company and the oil and gas industry. With the knowledge I now have, I want to explore the use of information systems to bridge the gap between business enterprise and the manufacturing process. Click here to launch video I feel that my qualification will help me to apply all the principles and cases that I have studied, and apply them to the cases that I am doing back at home in court. When I finished my Doctorate degree I wanted to do a family law specialisation, so this was the perfect thing to do for me. I could still work as a full-time litigation lawyer and at the same time do this Masters degree. It s convenient, because you can spread the exams over a period of five years. The flexibility of the programme is what actually intrigued me to do this Masters degree. I chose the University of London because, reputation-wise, I knew I wouldn t have any problems. It s well-known that a University of London degree is highly recognised. As far as I know I m the first Maltese to have a Masters degree in family law, so I was keen also on that. 6 Graduate Profiles Paul Schwarzenberger MSc Information Security, UK Achieving the Masters has significantly benefited my career in Information Security; previously, I provided specific technical advice to our customers, but now, with the breadth and depth of knowledge gained during the MSc, I also deliver security strategy consulting to senior executives at HP s global enterprise customers. 7 Graduate Profiles Janani Wijetunge LLB, Sri Lanka Studying with the University of London International Programmes has expanded my career and given me a chance to build some lifelong friendships. It has helped me achieve a lot of goals in my life and has expanded my horizons. It has really changed my perception about myself as well as what I am capable of. The degree has helped me be more employable because it is well recognised. People know that they get a graduate who is capable and is able to rise to any challenge. It has inspired me a lot because it has taught me to push myself beyond my limits and also that I don t have to set boundaries that I can achieve whatever I want. 8 Graduate Profiles Jane Walker MSc Clinical Trials, UK The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has a fantastic reputation for its work in epidemiology and clinical trials. I had never studied by distance learning before so I was a bit apprehensive, but the tutors were really helpful and excited about teaching. What is fantastic is that the tutors are world experts and I was able to talk to them online or in live chats. I could also speak to students in different countries who are undertaking clinical trials. The degree both helped day to day with my running of clinical trials with my patients and also gave me a deeper understanding both at a theoretical and practical level. 15 Our History The People s University since Foundation of the University of London The University s fourth Charter, signed by Queen Victoria on 9 April, opens the London degree to those who have not attended a college affiliated to the University, and so founds what is later known as the External System The weekly magazine All Year Round edited by Charles Dickens, described the University of London as The People s University. The University of London s first overseas examinations are held at Royal College, Mauritius on 10 July.

16 1880 University of London examinations are first held in India. The University of London awards degrees to the UK s first women graduates HG Wells achieves first class honours in zoology and second class honours in geology as a non-collegiate University of London student Frederick Gowland Hopkins, winner of the Nobel Prize in 1929, graduates as a non-collegiate student of the University of London DH Lawrence starts to study for the University of London BA as an External student at University College Nottingham, but does not complete the course.

17 Barnes Wallis, inventor of the dambusting or bouncing bomb, graduates as a University of London External student. Ronald Coase, Nobel Prize winner in 1991, takes the University of London Intermediate exam as an External student while still at grammar school University of London exams are first held in German prisoner of war camps. Between 1942 and 1945 the University of London co-ordinates arrangements for over 6,000 different examination papers of 136 examining bodies. More than 1,300 of these are for University of London exams. Wole (Akinwande Oluwole) Soyinka, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (in 1986) studies at University College Ibadan while it is in special relation to the University of London.

18 1953 Derek Walcott, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992, graduates from the University College of the West Indies, while it is in special relation to the University of London Dr Luisa Diogo, later Prime Minister of Mozambique, achieves a master s degree in Economics as a University of London External student Nelson Mandela passes University of London Intermediate examinations as an External student while in prison awaiting trial Gisela Stuart MP graduates in Law as a University of London External student.

19 The University of London External System celebrates its 150th Anniversary. From 1 August 2010, the External System is renamed the University of London International Programmes External System graduate Charles K. Kao shares the Nobel Prize in Physics for groundbreaking achievements in fibre optics. External System graduate Dr Rolph Payet shares the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore for his role as lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
