3 School of Management, Tourism and Hospitality MMC 112 Fall, 2009/10 Web Design I HTML and CSS Fundamentals INSTRUCTOR: OFFICE HOURS: Michael Mason Monday Friday 8:30 am 4:30 pm OFFICE LOCATION: Office T126-D, Trades and Technical wing TELEPHONE: [email protected] WEB: COURSE OFFERING DAY: COURSE OFFERING TIMES: Wednesday 1 4 pm Web Design I covers HTML, XHTML and CSS code, standards and validation. The student will build web pages that adhere to international standards and are viewable in all major modern browsers. HTML forms, tables, the use of design elements and multimedia are also covered. Students will build and maintain several web sites of their own creation. LEARNING OUTCOMES: The successful completion of this course indicates that the student has reliably demonstrated the ability to: Describe the basic functionality of HTML and XHTML. Code a web page using a basic text editor. Use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for page styling and layout. Evaluate web pages using various validation tools and services. Use web design techniques to improve web page readability and functionality.
4 DELIVERY METHODS/FORMAT: Conventional lecture and demonstration methods are used to present the theory portion while projects and assignments are utilized to reinforce and compliment the theory. PREREQUISITES: Admission to the program. COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION: Attendance and Participation Regular attendance and participation is expected. If you must miss class, please inform the instructor ahead of time, if at all possible. It is the student's responsibility to take notes, to obtain missed assignments, announcements or material handouts for any class they have missed. The student is also expected to review topics as outlined in the syllabus prior to class. Yukon College s policy on Academic Conduct states that attendance is mandatory. A student may be dismissed from a program if more than ten percent (10%) of the scheduled contact hours are missed in any one course. Evaluation: Assignments: Students are given assignments after each class to demonstrate their understanding of material covered during formal delivery and the application of this knowledge in a practical manner. Mid-term Project: This in-class practical project comprises a comprehensive evaluation of concepts and skills taught from the beginning of the course. Final Project: This in-class practical project will assess the student s course knowledge in general since the beginning of term, and concepts covered in more detail since the mid-term evaluation. Assignments 50% Mid-term Project 20% Final Project 30%
5 REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS/MATERIALS: Web Development and Design Foundations with XHTML Addison-Wesley ISBN OPTIONAL SUPPLIES: It is not required that you own a computer, however the appropriate hardware and the course software are suggested for optimal learning.
