Topics include collection of data, numerical and graphical descriptive methods, linear correlation and regression, probability concepts and distributions, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing for means and proportions. Prerequisite: MATH 150 or MATH 170 or MATH 180; or MATH 215 and 226. If you buy the textbook separately, you will still need a MyLabsPlus access code, which can be purchased at Another option is to purchase only an access code, and utilize the online textbook and solutions manual that are available electronically through the MyLabsPlus (MLP) website when you purchase the code. 2 Columbia College Online Campus P a g e 2 Course Overview In this course we will study the process of statistics: collecting, organizing, summarizing, and analyzing data in order to draw conclusions and answer questions. We will also provide a measure of how confident we are in any conclusions we make. In short, our goal is to learn how to use data to make informed decisions about the world around us. Technology Requirements Participation in this course will require the basic technology for all online classes at Columbia College: A computer with reliable Internet access, a web browser, Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office or another word processor such as Open Office You can find more details about standard technical requirements for our courses on our site. Additional requirements specific to this course: Adobe Flash Player, The most updated version of Java. You will also need access to MyLabsPlus to complete weekly homework. Course Objectives To choose appropriate statistical methods to solve real-world problems and understand the limitations of the methods in making predictions and drawing conclusions. To use appropriate technology to solve statistical problems. To organize data, communicate the essential features of the data, and interpret data in meaningful ways. To understand the role of probability in the foundation of modern statistics methods. Measurable Learning Outcomes Classify data as qualitative or quantitative (discrete or continuous). Identify advantages and disadvantages of sampling and of common sampling methods. Distinguish between observational studies and experiments and define different types of experimental design. Construct frequency distributions for qualitative data and frequency distributions, histograms, stem and leaf plots, and boxplots for quantitative data. Describe distributions of quantitative data in terms of shape, center, and spread. Compute probabilities using the addition rule, the multiplication rule, complements and simple counting techniques. Determine if events are independent using conditional probabilities. Construct discrete probability distributions. Compute and interpret the mean (expected value) and standard deviation of a discrete random variable. Compute probabilities of binomial experiments. Compute probabilities and find percentile values of normally distributed data. Determine if a data set is approximately normally distributed.

Compute point estimates and interval estimates for a mean or proportion. Determine the sample size necessary for estimating a mean or proportion to within a given margin of error. Work through the examples as you come to them on paper with your calculator. You can also find Calculator Video Tutorials in the Content area on D2L. The online text, found on the MyLabsPlus website, has links to video lectures on the material which you may find helpful. : Discussion is completed on the D2L site. You will be expected to actively participate in the discussion each week throughout the course. The discussion board is our classroom. Your reading actively with the calculator notes is part of our course, but the learning happens through our discussion of each concept we learn. Discussion is considered a dialogue between student-student and instructor-student. We learn from discussing in detail the ideas behind the calculations. It is just as important to post questions about areas that are unclear to you as it is to post correct solutions to problems. Effective posts and responses will lead the reader through your thought processes and explain key ideas or where difficulties might arise. The goal is to move beyond: I don t understand how to do number 32 to creating thoughtful and thought-provoking posts. There are a maximum of 5 points for discussion each week. You must post one problem from the Discussion Questions found in Content each week as well as a thoughtful response to at least one problem that another student posts. This response should add to the discussion forum on the topic of the original posting. You may post more if you wish, but no more than 5 points may be earned each week. Each weekly Discussion total is worth 5 points and your top six weekly Discussion scores are counted for a total of 30 points in the class. There is a document in the Course Content which gives more detail about the discussion area of the course. Please read it prior to posting. : Homework is done at MyLabsPlus. Click on the Homework button to find the weekly homework. You will have homework in MyLabsPlus during weeks 1 8. Each week there will be two homework sets that you should complete by midnight on Saturday. The first set has the exercises in the order that the material appears in the textbook. The second set is a mixed practice set. There are 60 points allocated for homework. At the end of the course, whatever percentage you have earned on the homework assignments will be applied to these 60 points. You will see one column in the D2L gradebook for homework. You may track you homework average throughout the course under Grades within MyLabsPlus. MyLabsPlus provides tools to assist you with the homework such as Show me an Example or Help Me

5 Columbia College Online Campus P a g e 5 Solve It. If you use these tools, you will have to complete a similar problem without using the tools in order to receive credit for the problem. Each problem should have a link to the online textbook and most have links to video lectures over the topic as well. You may rework each homework exercise until you get it correct by selecting similar exercise at the bottom of the screen. Once you have completed the MLP homework, there are suggested HW problems from the text you should work on. These do not have to be turned in for grading but are an important part of the learning process. Homework Points: Homework Grades are calculated by multiplying your final percentage in MyLabsPlus by the 60 points allocated for Homework. This is updated at the end of week 8 in the D2L gradebook. You may view your Homework score in the MLP gradebook anytime during the entire 8 weeks. Quizzes: Eight quizzes are given, one per week. Each week, a quiz is posted by noon Thursday in the content area of our class and is due by midnight on Saturday. Submit your quiz by clicking the Quizzes link in our course on D2L, then clicking on the Quiz you are taking. Quizzes are multiple choice and computer graded. Students have unlimited attempts on each quiz during the quiz period. There is a 60 minute time limit on each quiz. Each quiz is worth 10 points and your top six quiz scores are counted for a total of 60 points in the class. Exams: There will be a midterm and a final exam. Both exams are computerized and proctored. You must arrange an acceptable proctor. More information about proctors can be found below-please see Proctor Policy. A 3 by 5 note-card, with your notes on both sides, may be utilized on both the midterm and final exam. Each exam will have a 2-hour time limit. You will have one attempt on each exam; be sure to save your work often. The midterm exam will be open from 8:00 a.m. Tuesday until midnight Saturday of Week 4. The final exam will be open from 8:00 a.m. Tuesday until midnight Saturday of Week 8. The midterm and final exams are multiple-choice and computer graded. Your percentage is recorded in the D2L gradebook. Each exam is tailored to the learning objectives of the course. There will be an exam review for each exam. You may take them an unlimited number of times to practice for the actual midterm and final exams.

Quiz 8 Final Exam This exam is comprehensive (covers the entire semester) and is given online in a proctored environment. The Handbook is available online; you can also obtain a copy by calling the Student Affairs office (Campus Life) at The teacher maintains the right to manage a positive learning environment, and all students must adhere to the conventions of online etiquette. Plagiarism Your grade will be based in large part on the originality of your ideas and your written presentation of these ideas. Presenting the words, ideas, or expression of another in any form as your own is plagiarism. Students who fail to properly give credit for information contained in their written work (papers, journals, exams, etc.) are violating the intellectual property rights of the original author. For proper citation of the original authors, you should reference the appropriate publication manual for your degree program or course (APA, MLA, etc.). Violations are taken seriously in higher education and may result in a failing grade on the assignment, a grade of "F" for the course, or dismissal from the College. Collaboration conducted between students without prior permission from the instructor is considered plagiarism and will be treated as such. Spouses and roommates taking the same course should be particularly careful. All required papers may be submitted for textual similarity review to Turnitin.com for the detection of plagiarism. All submitted papers may be included in the Turnitin.com reference database for the purpose of detecting plagiarism. This service is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Use posted on the Turnitin.com site. Online Participation You are expected to read the assigned texts and participate in the discussions and other course activities each week. Assignments should be posted by the due dates stated on the grading schedule in your syllabus. If an emergency arises that prevents you from participating in class, please let your instructor know as soon as possible. Attendance Policy Attendance for a week will be counted as having submitted a course assignment for which points have been earned during that week of the session or if the proctoring information has been submitted or the plagiarism quiz taken if there is no other assignment due that week. A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday (except for Week 8, when the week and the course will end on Saturday at midnight). The course and system deadlines are all based on the Central Time Zone. Cougar All students are provided a CougarMail account when they enroll in classes at Columbia College. You are responsible for monitoring from that account for important messages from the College and from your instructor. You may forward your Cougar account to another account; however, the College cannot be held responsible for breaches in security or service interruptions with other providers. The class discussions are for public messages so the class members can each see what others have to say about any given topic and respond. Late Assignment Policy An online class requires regular participation and a commitment to your instructor and your classmates to regularly engage in the reading, discussion and writing assignments. Although most of the online communication for this course is asynchronous, you must be able to commit to the schedule of work for the class for the next eight weeks. You must keep up with the schedule of reading and writing to successfully complete the class. General course work: Late assignments will not be accepted for Discussion Posts, Quizzes, or MyLab Homework. Proctor Information: If proctor information is submitted late, access to Week 3 8 course materials will be delayed. If you are unable to complete your assignments because you have not submitted your proctor information to the Dropbox, it will be considered late. Course Evaluation You will have the opportunity to evaluate the course near the end of the session. Course evaluations will open on Sunday of Week 5 and will remain open until Thursday of Week 7. A link will be sent to your CougarMail that will allow you to access the evaluation. Be assured that the evaluations are anonymous and that your instructor will not be able to see them until after final grades are submitted. Proctor Policy Students taking courses that require proctored exams must submit their completed proctor request

10 Columbia College Online Campus P a g e 10 forms to their instructors by the end of the second week of the session. Proctors located at Columbia College campuses are automatically approved. The use of Proctor U services is also automatically approved. The instructor of each course will consider any other choice of proctor for approval or denial. Additional proctor choices the instructor will consider include: public librarians, high school or college instructors, high school or college counseling services, commanding officers, education service officers, and other proctoring services. Personal friends, family members, athletic coaches and direct supervisors are not acceptable.
