3 BIM - The Skanska Global Definition Building Information Modelling is a method to describe a project and its spaces, structures, components and materials with their essential information and properties. The model is a container for the information. BIM can also be described as a collaborative approach making sure the right people got the right project information at the right time. 3

4 What Does That Mean in Practice? BIM Project - A designated project where all participants agree to a common set of standards and processes. The data created enriches across the life of the project and can be used to benefit all members of the team. This applies during design, construction, operation and ownership - it all starts at Pre-Construction. BIM is a way of working, not something you can procure. 3D Model - A BIM based deliverable, but not BIM itself. Attributes - Fields within objects that are used to host, link or reference information, the I in BIM. This intelligence is used to support the work of the project team across all phases. 4

12 Safety in Design BIM can facilitate better and more regular safety reviews during design 12

13 The Virtual Prototype Enabling Industrialisation BIM data allows Skanska to develop a virtual prototype, the model is checked for safety, environmental credentials, buildability and spatial coordination. During production staff enjoy a environment that is safe and warm with waste recycled back into the production process. Fewer staff are on the construction site and for less time. 13

14 Safety on Site Reviewing planned work with a model adds a new dimension! Sample 2D services drawing, hard to read and understand. The potential for error is high re-working takes time and cost, risks not easily understood. 14 Coordinated BIM model, easy to review and understand. Clash free design can be easily achieved reduced site work and safer.

15 Safety Coordination and BIM The barrier is designed to leave sufficient room for safe working during wall construction. The team understand what a safe environment must look like. The barrier can remain in place during construction, safer by design. BIM can facilitate improved project safety reviews and staff engagement in safety planning. 15

16 The Building Blocks of Site BIM Designers and contractors working together Skanska has produced a library of construction components, allowing projects to create a virtual site environment. Safety inductions become highly tailored to suit upcoming work, improving site staff understanding and helping them become aware of the risks. 16
