1 MATH Trigonometry, Section 423 Spring 2012 Instructor: Mr. Ron Hammond Office: L212 Phone: Office Hours: TR 10:35-11:50 rhammond@blinn.edu Course Description: Definitions of the Trigonometric functions, special angles, fundamental identities, right triangle solutions, circular measure, trig reductions, oblique triangles, composite angles, trig equations, inverse trig functions, graphing. Course Objectives: The student should perform at a 70% or better average on examinations and quizzes covering the topics listed in the course description and those topics included in the daily schedule. Prerequisites: Mathematics 1414 or consent of the mathematics department. Three class hours per week. Credit: Three hours. Textbook: Dugopolski, Trigonometry, 3rd Ed., Pearson Publishing, 2010, with MyMathLab. Student Learning Outcomes The students will be able to work with both positive and negative angles; solve problems using the trigonometric functions for acute angles of right triangles; use the cofunction theorem; find the six trigonometric functions of special angles; find the trigonometric functions for any angle. The students will be able to work with circular and periodic functions; find function values using a calculator; solve right triangles using trigonometric functions and apply problem solving skills to the stated problems. The students will be able to graph trigonometric functions. The students will be able to understand the relation between degrees and radians and be able to convert from one unit to the other. The students will be able to solve problems dealing with arc length, angular and linear speed, and the area of a circular sector. The students will be able to prove and/or verify fundamental trigonometric identities and solve trigonometric equations using algebraic manipulation and trigonometric identities. The students will be able to prove and/or verify trigonometric identities containing composite angles and solve trigonometric equations using these identities. The students will be able to work with inverse trigonometric functions and verify inverse trigonometric identities. The students will be able to solve oblique triangles using correct laws and formulas; apply problem solving techniques to stated problems, including problems of vector addition.

2 Grading Policy: There will be five (5) in class, closed book closed notes exams tentatively scheduled for the dates shown below. Each exam will be worth 80 points. You will have on-line homework (MyMathLab) to be completed over each section. Each section will be equally weighted and the total will be worth 100 points. There are two forms of quizzes. First, there will be short quizzes (in class/take home) given at least once a day, sometimes twice a day. There are also online quizzes in MyMathLab that correlate with each section of online homework. To access the quiz, you must make a score of at least 90% on the corresponding section of HW. The lowest three quiz grades will be dropped, and the remaining grades averaged equally. The quizzes will count collectively 175 points. The final exam is comprehensive, closed book closed notes, and will be worth 125 points. Your final grade will be computed by adding your total points, with a maximum of 800 possible. Grades will then be assigned according to the scale: = A; = B; = C; = D; below 490 = F. May 7 from 7:45-9:45 a.m. Make-up Policy: Since I am dropping the three lowest quiz grades, no make-ups will be given on the quizzes. There are no make-up opportunities for the homework or online quizzes. Each homework or quiz set will be open until 12:00 p.m. (Noon) of the class period. At that time, the HW/quiz for that period will close and not be reopened for any reason. Make-ups for major exams will only be given for authorized excuses. This excuse should be in the form of a signed message from a college official, or other documentation needed for the excuse to be authorized and you must contact me within 24 hours of missing the exam. Not contacting me will result in an automatic zero. The make-up exam will be comprehensive, and will be given on Wed. May 2. It will be in the Learning Center. A second missed exam will result in an automatic grade of zero with no possibility of a make up. Accommodations for Students With Disabilities: We would like to help students with disabilities achieve their highest potential in college. In order to receive accommodations on exams or assignments, students must provide an Accommodations Request from our Disabilities Coordinator, make an appointment to meet with me during office hours or after class, and discuss which accommodations are appropriate. Proper documentation should be provided to the Disabilities Coordinator in the Center for Student Development ( ) so that this can be done in a timely manner. Accommodations are not retroactive and no accommodations will be

3 granted until the documentation has been signed and on file with me and the Disabilities Coordinator. Important dates: The last day to drop with a Q is Friday, April 13. Dropping after this date (or being dropped for absences) will result in a grade of QF. Classroom Policy: No food or drinks are allowed in the classroom. Please be aware of the Blinn College policy regarding the use of tobacco products on campus. The policy is on the Blinn home page as well in the additional documents I passed out the first day of class. All pagers and cell phones must be turned off. If your cell phone rings in my class, I reserve the right to answer it. I will look to make you a date, set you up to bring the beer home, or tell your mother that you will be sending her a dozen roses just because you re my mom! Calculator Policy: A graphing calculator is strongly recommended. I strongly recommend the TI-83 plus or TI-84. A limited number of calculators can be checked out daily from the Learning Center. TI-89/92 or NSpire calculators and some models of HP-48 calculators may not be used in this class. Dishonesty Policy: Students caught cheating on any assignment, quiz or exam in this course will be assessed a penalty that will range in severity from and F (or zero) on that particular activity to an F for the course. Any student assigned an F for cheating has one week from the time that assignment is returned to the class to dispute the grade. After that time, it will be assumed the student has accepted the grade, and no changes will be made. Grades received as a penalty for cheating will not be dropped or replaced. For the purpose of this class, cheating will be defined as (but not limited to) access or use of unauthorized material during exams or quizzes, collaboration between students during exams, quizzes or assignments for which group work is not allowed, perusal of another student s work during exams or quizzes, copying another student s work or allowing other students to copy your work on exams, quizzes or assignments, or having unauthorized information or programs stored on calculators if/when calculators are made accessible during exams or quizzes. Students who cheat and students who facilitate cheating will be subject to the same penalties. Civility Statement: Members of the Blinn College community, including faculty, staff and students are expected to act honestly and responsibly in all aspects of campus life. Blinn College holds all members accountable for their actions and words. Therefore all members should commit themselves to behave in a manner that recognizes personal respect, and demonstrates concern for the personal dignity, rights and freedoms of every member of the College community, including respect for College property and the physical and intellectual property of others.

4 If a student is asked to leave the classroom because of uncivil behavior, the student may not return to that class until he or she arranges a conference with the instructor. It is the responsibility of the student to arrange that conference. Blinn College's Attendance Policy: The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. Each class meeting builds the foundation for subsequent class meetings. Without full participation and regular class attendance, students shall find themselves at a severe disadvantage for achieving success in college. If the student accumulates more than four days (two weeks) of absences, he/she will be administratively withdrawn from the class and a grade of Q given. If you are withdrawn after April 13 (Q drop date) you will be dropped and given a grade of QF. Any student who has reached the state mandated 6 withdrawal limit will be administratively assigned a grade of QF, regardless of the date of the withdrawal. The only authorized/excused absences are for: 1) Attendance at a Blinn sponsored activity; 2) Military service obligation; 3) Religious holy day. Absences for 1), 2) and 3) require prior notification.
