2 Overview This course will introduce and provide non-technical people with the basics of a substation and all the general components that are inside a substation. General issues that are involved in the construction, operation and maintenance of substations and switchyards, and detailed safety awareness will be discussed. It will allow people who are not substation design engineers to know enough to oversee various aspects of a substation and will allow strong oversight of contractors and various substation projects. He started out performing various load and capacity and transmission reliability planning studies as part of the original PJM Interconnection. After working in the PJM Interconnection group he started performing reliability planning studies internally for PPL Electric Utilities. He then moved into the Transmission and Distribution Component and Design Engineering area. From there he headed up the Transmission maintenance for PPL and was overseeing 5000 miles of kV lines. His field experiences lead him into being Field Manager for Division Operations for PPL s Central Division. While at PPL he was Manager of the Contract Management Department and his organization was responsible for setting up all types of contracts in every area of the electric utility business. He is a graduate of Lehigh University with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Economics and has his Masters in Engineering Management from Drexel University. 2
