1 Team Fundraising Tips National Ovarian Cancer Coalition Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer WELCOME! Thank you for joining us in our mission to raise awareness and promote education about ovarian cancer. Donations collected from dedicated participants like you are what make the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer a great success year after year. As a Team Captain, you are a powerful force in raising awareness and promoting education about ovarian cancer. A Team Captain s job is to motivate and encourage others, including family, friends and coworkers, to join your team. This Team Captain packet will take you through four steps to help you create a successful team: STEP 1: SET A FUNDRAISING GOAL It is recommended that all teams set the team goal at a minimum of $1,000. Additionally, set a dollar goal for each of your team members to raise toward the Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer. STEP 2: RECRUIT TEAM MEMBERS Just ask. Recruit your family, friends, coworkers and neighbors to join your team. When you find new team members, ask them to invite their family, friends, coworkers and neighbors. You will be surprised how quickly your team grows! You also have the option of allowing members from the public who sign up online to join your team if you wish. STEP 3: FUNDRAISE Share your enthusiasm and excitement with your team as you work together to reach your fundraising goal. Be sure your team members are well prepared to reach their goal (use this kit for ideas and tools) and communicate often. More suggestions and ways to FUNdraise are listed later in this packet. STEP 4: RUN/WALK, FOLLOW UP AND CELEBRATE! Run/Walk together and enjoy the experience with your team members. STEP 1: SETTING YOUR TEAM S FUNDRAISING GOAL The Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer is the largest fundraiser and awareness event for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, and reaching our goal depends on the success of our event participants raising money by collecting donations from their friends, family and coworkers. Set the bar high! We suggest that every team set their goal for at least $1,000 and you can encourage each team member to raise at least $250. This is an easy goal if you follow and share our fundraising tips in Step 3. If you really want to challenge your team, set the fundraising goal even higher. Remember, the more money you raise, the more the NOCC can provide ovarian cancer education, awareness and support for those affected by the disease in our community.
2 STEP 2: RECRUITING YOUR TEAM MEMBERS Ask everyone you know to be a team member, including friends, family, coworkers and neighbors. Once they have registered online encourage them to invite their friends, family, coworkers and neighbors to join the team. Keep building your team until the online registration deadline before the Run/Walk. After that date, bring the rest of your team registrations and any additional donations to the Run/Walk Talk about the event and your team to everyone you meet. The more excited you are about running/walking to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer, the more contagious the excitement and involvement becomes. Ask your friends, family, coworkers and neighbors to support you and your team in your efforts by making a donation, and encourage others to do the same. You and your team members can also place information, including registration, posters, and postcards in your community to spread the word about the event. As you build your team... Be sure you have all of the information for your team members to register online. Distribute copies of the Sample Fundraising Letters/ s for team members to copy and send. is a fast, inexpensive and easy way to get the word out and raise money! Send weekly updates or make weekly phone calls with the latest Run/Walk information, team funds raised to-date, fundraising ideas, and any success stories from your team members. Encourage your team members to collect their donations (donations sheet available on registration site) and donations BEFORE the day of the Run/Walk. Copy and share these easy fundraising ideas with your team to reach your goal. Work hard and have fun! Ask, ask and ask again. Remember you are asking on behalf of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and not for yourself. When you limit who you ask, you limit the amount you can raise! STEP 3: FUNDRAISE There are literally thousands of ways you can raise funds individually and as a team! Outlined below are some of the tried and true examples of how many teams over the years have enjoyed fundraising success. Be sure to involve as many members of your team in group fundraising efforts, while encouraging all team members to also raise funds on their own. RAISING FUNDS WITH FRIENDS & FAMILY Create a buddy system. Ask someone who cannot participate to help you collect donations. Hold a bake sale or car wash to benefit your team (great way to involve the younger team members!) Give something up movie, manicure or dinner at an expensive restaurant and contribute what you would have spent to the Run/Walk. (Who doesn t enjoy a Starbucks every once in a while or every day?) Ask one person a day to sponsor you for the Run/Walk. Wear past years t-shirts all on same day to promo this years Run/Walk and ask for donations. Ask your doctor s office to donate see if they will allow you to put a can on their counter or set up a table with awareness materials
3 THIRD PARTY COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING IDEAS 1. Host a fundraising party and ask attendees to make a donation in support of your team s efforts. 2. Many local restaurants offer charity nights that benefit non-profits: Panera Bread, Margarita s, Chipotle, Applebees, Chilis the possibilities are endless! 3. Are you a rep for Pampered Chef, Avon, Tastefully Simple? Hold your own fundraiser for your team. 4. Ask each member to ask 5 local stores to promo the Run/Walk by putting up a poster and a postcard. 5. Are you crafty? If you are make something and raffle it off. USING CONTACTS & SOCIAL MEDIA TO FUNDRAISE 1. Use our new registration tools to send s to friends and family to ask for donations. 2. Post photos on Facebook from previous year s Run/Walk to generate interest and ask for donations. 3. Send out Tweets on a daily basis for a week about the event and each time someone donates to your team. 4. Inspire friendly competition between teams and post your weekly progress on Facebook/Twitter. 5. Create Facebook events and invite all your friends to support you! (Please ask them to like our chapter page as well) FUNDRAISING AT SCHOOL & PLACES OF EMPLOYMENT 1. Set up an awareness table* at your job with your donation sheet available to collect donations for your team 2. Hold a wear teal day at school and ask for donations from your classmates. 3. Encourage local high schools to form teams. 4. Find out if your company has a matching gifts program. Matching gifts can double your team s donation! 5. Suggest friendly competition between team members. Set weekly or monthly goals to beat and recognize the team member who reaches it first. 6. Ask your friends to contribute to the Run/Walk instead of purchasing a gift for your birthday, anniversary, or any occasion. HOW TO RAISE $250 IN ONE WEEK DAY 1: $25 DAY 2: $40 DAY 3: $45 DAY 4: $60 DAY 5: $50 DAY 6: $30 DAY 7: $250 Sponsor yourself Ask two relatives for $20 Ask three friends Ask four coworkers Ask five neighbors for $10 Ask your spouse or partner Celebrate your accomplishment! STEP 4: RUN/WALK, FOLLOW UP, AND CELEBRATE WITH YOUR TEAM! On Run/Walk day, make sure your team knows where to gather at the event and where to meet up for the team picture. Don t forget to collect and turn in your team s donations at the event. Celebrate with your team as you Run/Walk because you are all making a difference! Be sure to follow up with each team member after the event by sending a personal thank you note. Share a photo with your family and team members to highlight and enjoy your success. You can even plan a post-run/walk event picnic, party, breakfast to share results, thank everyone and encourage future participation.
4 FACTS & INFORMATION TO SHARE WITH YOUR TEAM AND DONORS ABOUT THE NATIONAL OVARIAN CANCER COALITION All proceeds from the event support the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition s local and national ovarian cancer education and awareness programs and support programs intended to improve the survival rate and quality of life for women with ovarian cancer. There are currently no early detection tests for ovarian cancer. Most cases are diagnosed in their later stages when the prognosis is very poor. If diagnosed and treated early, the five-year survival rate is over 90 percent. Therefore, it is imperative that the signs and symptoms of the disease are recognized, not only by women, but also by their families, friends and the medical community. Some symptoms include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, trouble eating or feeling full quickly, and feeling the need to urinate urgently or often. SAMPLE FUNDRAISING LETTER/ #1 Dear, I am writing to tell you about an important event in which I am participating. I am running/walking in the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition - Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer, and I have decided to form a team, {INSERT TEAM NAME}. Will you join me? I know it will be a lot of fun and together we can make a difference. Here are the details: When & Where: {INSERT DATE} {INSERT ADDRESS} How: Go to {INSERT WEBPAGE LINK} and click on the link to register now. My goal is for each team member to raise $250! Everyone is welcome to join my team, so please invite a friend or two. Proceeds from the Run/Walk are used to fund research, raise awareness & promote education about ovarian cancer. The mission of the NOCC is to save lives by fighting tirelessly to prevent and cure ovarian cancer, and to improve the quality of life for survivors. For more information, visit Thank you for joining my team! SAMPLE FUNDRAISING LETTER/ #2 Dear, On {INSERT DATE} I am running/walking with my team, {INSERT TEAM NAME} in the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition - Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer. Proceeds from the Run/Walk are used to raise awareness & promote education about ovarian cancer. The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition is committed to improving the survival rate and quality of life for women with ovarian cancer. Cancer is second only to heart disease as the leading cause of death in the United States. Over 22,000 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed every year. This year alone, the American Cancer Society predicts there will be 14,180 deaths due to ovarian cancer. Clearly, more research is needed to increase early detection and improve survival rates. I have committed to raise $ {INSERT AMOUNT} and I cannot do it without the help of people like you. Please consider supporting my efforts on behalf of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. To donate online, please visit my fundraising page {INSERT LINK}. If you prefer to mail in your donation, please send it to: Team Member Name and Address. Checks should be made payable to National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. All donations for the NOCC - Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer are tax deductible as charitable contributions. Thank you in advance for your support.
