5 ABSTRACT Monika Widyastuti Surtikanti. S Developing Video-Based Supplementary Material to Teach Speaking Skill Based on Curriculum 2013 for the Seventh Grade of SMP Negeri 12 Surakarta. First Supervisor: Dra. Dewi Rochsantiningsih, M.Ed.,Ph.D. Second Supervisor: Dr. Ngadiso, M.Pd. A Thesis: English Education Departement, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Sebelas Maret University Surakarta This study aims at (1) investigating the quality of When English Rings A Bells textbook to teach speaking skill for grade seventh of Junior High School, and (2) developing video-based supplementary materials to teach speaking skill for grade seventh of SMP 12 Surakarta. This study is categorized as a Research and Development study. There are 2 stages in conducting this study. The first is exploration, which consists of need analysis, library research, prototype design, and expert judgment. The second is model development which consists of prototype try out and evaluation. The result of need analysis revealed that When English Rings a Bell (WERB) has some weaknesses especially for teaching speaking skill. The materials in WERB were still limited. The teacher had to add some materials from other resources. Before developing the materials, the researcher made an evaluation towards WERB for grade seventh as the existing material by using the construct of good speaking materials. The result of the textbook analysis shows that WERB for seventh grade does not reflect the principles of scientific approach teaching procedures. Moreover, WERB for seventh grade does not accomodate one of the four indicators of speaking namely grammar. WERB for seventh grade does not provide authentic materials to teach speaking skill. The students should be given opportunities to have disscussion and presentation using the target language. The researcher designed the prototype of video-based supplementary materials for teaching speaking skill based on the Curriculum The first step is analyzing the core and basic competence in the Curriculum Then, the researcher drew some indicators in order to find the appropriate materials to achieve the learning goals of speaking skill. The draft, then, was evaluated by the expert in TEFL. This stage is carried out for finding out the weaknesses of the prototype design whether or not the draft has fulfilled the criteria of good speaking materials based on 2103 curriculum. After obtaining the feedback from the expert, the researcher revised the draft. The supplementary materials are tried out three times in order to validate the feasibility. It is hoped that the video-based supplementary materials can help the teacher for giving additional materials for teaching speaking. The researcher also hopes that the students motivation and the situation of the classroom improve significantly using the video-based supplementary materials. Pembimbing Pertama: Dra. Dewi Rochsantiningsih, M.Ed., Ph.D. Pembimbing Kedua: Dr. Ngadiso, M.Pd. Tesis: Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) menginvestigasi kualitas buku When English Rings A Bell untuk mengajar ketrampilan berbicara untuk kelas VII SMP, dan (2) mendeskripsikan pengembangan materi tambahan berbasis video untuk mengajar ketrampilan berbicara untuk kelas VII SMP Negeri 12 Surakarta. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian Riset dan Pengembangan. Ada dua tahapan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Tahap pertama adalah eksplorasi yang terdiri dari analisis kebutuhan, studi pustaka, perencanaan prototype, dan validasi ahli. Sedangkan tahap kedua adalah pengembangan produk yang terdiri dari uji coba produk dan evaluasi. Berdasarkan analisis kebutuhan, buku When English Rings A Bell (WERB) memiliki banyak kelemahan terutama dalam mengajar ketrampilan berbicara. Materi dalam WERB masih terbatas. Para guru harus mencari materi tambahan dari sumber lain. Sebelum mengembangkan materi, peneliti mengevaluasi WERB dengan menggunakan kriteria materi ketrampilan berbicara yang baik yang di dapat dari berberapa literatur. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa WERB tidak mencerminkan langkah-langkah pembelajaran dalam pendekatan ilmiah. Selain itu, WERB tidak mengakomodasi salah satu indikator berbicara yaitu grammar. WERB tidak memiliki materi yang autentik untuk mengajar ketrampilan berbicara. Para siswa seharusnya diberi kesempatan untuk berdiskusi dan presentasi menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Berdasarkan analisis kebutuhan, peneliti membuat prototype materi tambahan berbasis video untuk mengajar ketrampilan berbicara berdasarkan Kurikulum Tahap pertama yaitu menganalisis KI dan KD dalam Kurikulum Kemudian, peneliti membuat indikator untuk mencari materi yang sesuai dengan tujuan pembelajaran ketrampilan berbahasa. Kemudian prototype tadi divalidasi oleh ahli dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Hal ini dilakukan untuk mencari kelemahan prototype dan apakah sudah memenuhi kriteria materi ketrampilan berbicara yang baik berdasarkan Kurikulum Setelah mendapatkan umpan balik dari ahli, peneliti merevisi prototype. Materi tambahan tadi di ujicobakan hingga tiga kali hingga layak digunakan. Peneliti berharap agar materi tambahan berbasis video ini dapat membantu guru memberi materi tambahan untuk mengajar ketrampilan berbicara. Peneliti juga berharap agar motivasi siswa dan situasi kelas dapat meningkat berkat penggunaan materi tambahan ini.
