Architectural Home Design Software Adding Moldings to Cabinets Reference Number: KB Last Modified: July 16, 2015 The information in this article applies to: QUESTION I would like to add several moldings to my cabinet - one on top, one in the middle and another on the bottom. How do I add multiple moldings to a single cabinet?
ANSWER You can add multiple moldings to a single cabinet by using the O set speci cation. Using this feature, you can add a molding; move it to the correct location on the cabinet; and then add new moldings. This process can be repeated until all necessary moldings have been added to the cabinet. To add base molding to a cabinet 1. From the menu, select Build> Cabinet> Base Cabinet and click in floor plan view to add a base cabinet to the plan. 2. Click the Select Objects tool and then click on the Open Object edit tool to display the Base Cabinet Specification dialog. 3. Go to the MOLDINGS panel and click the Add New button to open the Select Library Object dialog. 4. Browse to a molding and click to select it. In this example, CA-27 is used. When a library object is selected, a preview will display on the right side of the dialog. 5. Click the OK button to close the dialog box and return to the MOLDING tab of the Base Cabinet Specification dialog. The molding you selected will display in the preview image to the right. 6. On the left side of the dialog, in the Molding Specification section, specify the dimensions and placement of the selected molding. Let's change the molding Height to match our toe kick height: in this case, 4". Press the Tab key on the keyboard to move your cursor to the next field and
apply this change without closing the dialog. The new height will be reflected in the preview. In this example, the Width of 9/16" will be fine. The Offset value refers to the distance from either the top or bottom of the cabinet, depending on which radio button is selected. Let's leave the default value of zero. Select the From Bottom radio button and notice that the molding moves to 0" from the bottom of the cabinet. 7. With this first molding in its correct location, you can now add additional molding to the cabinet. To place molding in the middle of a cabinet 1. While still in the Cabinet Specification dialog, select the FRONT panel. 2. In the Door/Drawer Overlay section, verify that Traditional Overlay is selected. 3. Next, click on the area between the drawer and the door in the preview image. The selected area will be highlighted and the Item Type will read Separation with an Item Height of Increase the Item Height to provide space for the molding to be inserted, making sure to remove the (D) in the process.
If the (D) is not deleted, the Item Height will revert back to the default setting of 2". In this example, the Item Height is changed to 4". 5. Return to the MOLDINGS panel and click the Add New button to open the Select Library Object dialog and select a new molding profile. 6. Browse to Architectural> Molding> Chair Rail, and then select a profile. In this example, CA-25 is selected. 7. You will once again see a preview of this molding to the right. Click the OK button at the bottom of the dialog to accept your selection and return to the Moldings tab, where the newly selected molding now displays in the cabinet
preview. 8. To lower the molding to the middle of the cabinet, adjust the Offset value to the left of the image. In this example, a value of 8 1/2 is entered, which will locate the molding 8 1/2 inches below the top of the cabinet. This value may vary, depending on other elements on the cabinet face. 9. Press the Tab key on the keyboard to apply the value and move the molding while the dialog box remains open. To add molding at the top of the cabinet face 1. On the MOLDING panel, click the Add New button and select a Chair Rail. This time, let's select CA Click the OK button to close the Select Library Objects dialog and return to the Base Cabinet Specification dialog where the new molding now displays in the cabinet preview. 3. Adjust the Offset values as needed.
In this example the Vertical Offset is left at 0", and From Top is selected. 4. To see the results, select 3D> Create Perspective View> Full Camera from the menu and click and drag a camera arrow directed at the cabinet.
The moldings that are added to a cabinet can be individually selected and edited at any time on the MOLDING panel of the Base Cabinet Speci cation dialog. Select a specific molding profile from the drop-down list and adjust the Height, Width and Offset values as needed. With a molding profile selected, you can also click the Select button to open the Select Library Object dialog and replace it with a different profile; or click the Delete button to remove it from the drop-down list and from the cabinet face.
