1 4 July 2013 CLP Launches Hong Kong s First Liberal Studies Independent Enquiry Studies Competition to Promote Energy and Environmental Education Committed to providing a highly reliable supply of electricity and quality service, while attaching great importance to the environment, (CLP) has organised Hong Kong s first Liberal Studies Independent Enquiry Studies Competition to further encourage students interest in energy and environment-related issues. Addressing guests and finalists at the finalists presentation today, Ms Quince Chong, Chief Corporate Development Officer of CLP Power, said CLP has been striving to increase energy efficiency, resulting in improved generation performance and a more effective distribution network. It has also helped and encouraged customers in energy-saving while implementing a wide range of measures to minimise emissions from power generation. Ms Chong also announced that one-quarter of all secondary schools in Hong Kong had registered for the free e-learning kit launched by CLP aimed at liberal studies students, which has recorded 130,000 page views since its launch in CLP s tireless efforts in environmental education underscore its belief that it can use its professional expertise to promote informed public discussion about the sustainable development of Hong Kong and the need to strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection. To further nurture students interest in energy and environment-related issues, and to inspire them to examine the issue from multiple perspectives, CLP organised the Hong Kong s first Liberal Studies (Energy Technology and the Environment) Independent Enquiry Studies Competition following the inauguration of Hong Kong s first e-learning kit specialising in energy technology two years ago, Ms Chong explained. Five outstanding works were selected from a total of 128 entries from 34 secondary schools for today s finals of the competition, jointly organised by CLP, the CLP Liberal Studies (IES) Advisory Committee, the Hong Kong Liberal Studies Association, the New Territories West Liberal Studies Professional Network and Sing Tao Daily. The finalists gave their presentations in front of guests and a panel of judges including representatives from the Environmental Bureau, the Education Bureau, the 1

2 Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Ching Ka-wai, of Chiu Chow Association Secondary School, who evaluated recycling bin usage among residents of the Chung On Estate and Kam Tin Court in Mao On Shan, and Wong Chi-chung, of New Life Schools Incorporation Lui Kwok Pat Fong College, who studied the development of solar power in Hong Kong, shared the first prize for their reports. They impressed the judges with their multiple perspectives on the issue, their concise and smooth articulation, and the creative and interactive features of their presentations. Ching and Wong were excited about winning the competition. Both said that the keys to producing a successful IES report were to have clear objectives, to set a manageable scope and to work hard with persistence to bring the project to completion. Judge Liu Ah Chuen, a school principal who is chairman of the CLP Liberal Studies (IES) Advisory Committee and a council member of the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, said he was very impressed by the high standard of entries. The competition was an excellent platform for students and teachers to find out more about the relationship between energy technology and the environment, he said. Two-thirds of the competition s 128 entrants chose environment-related topics such as energy conservation, management of solid waste and environmental pollution, while the remainder focussed on energy technology topics such as the development of renewable energy in Hong Kong and the effects of electronic products on people s lives. As well as its e-learning kit, LS-energy.hk, CLP has organised a series of seminars and school talks on Energy Technology and the Environment, attracting more than 2,400 students and teachers. CLP will continue to work with its partners and community groups to promote environmental education and to create a greener Hong Kong for future generations. -End- 2
