1 September 1, 2016 Goliad County 4H Newsletter Please read this letter carefully, and keep it for reference. There is extensive information in this letter to inform you of the upcoming events for the 4-H year. If you have any questions concerning any of these items, please feel free to call the Extension Office at PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS 4-H members participating in 4-H projects must attend 6 out of 9 meetings during the 4-H year to remain in good standing, be eligible for summer reward trips, and be eligible to participate in 4-H projects the next year. 4-H members planning to exhibit animal projects in the Goliad County Livestock Show must be in good standing with their club membership by attending 75% of their local club meetings (five of the seven club meetings from September to March) during the 4-H year before Fair time to be eligible to show their animals in the annual show in March. Please be very aware that participating in the County Fair (livestock or homemaking) is a set of separate rules from 4-H. You have to be a 4-H, FFA, or FCCLA member to participate but they have their own set of rules that you are expected to follow to be eligible to participate. NO PASS - NO 4-H ACTIVITY PARTICIPATION Since 4-H is recognized as an extra-curricular activity by the Texas Education Agency, the "No Pass - No Play" rule will be in effect on all 4-H activities. It is important for parents to stress good grades all year long. Parents should work with the teachers to make every effort to see that your child is passing.
2 PECAN AND PEANUT SALES Attached are the order forms for each 4-H member in your family for the pecans, peanuts and snack mixes. You will be taking orders until October 18 th, and your order forms must be brought to the Extension office by NOON on Tuesday, October 18 th. Do not collect money until you deliver your orders in November. Be sure to tell your customers that we do not have a delivery date as yet because that will depend on the company supplying the products BUT it will be delivered in time for Thanksgiving! Also the prices have increased, please assure customers these are the same prices pecans are selling for in the stores. But these are fresh pecans!! Each 4-H member is asked to sell a minimum of 20 pounds of the products. REMEMBER --All order forms are due no later than NOON on Tuesday, October 18th. Orders received after that deadline WILL NOT be honored. Late orders will not be accepted. Additional order forms are available in the Extension office. Watch the 4-H Column for the delivery date. 4-H WEEK OCTOBER 2-8, 2016 National 4-H Week is October !! Make plans with other 4-H members to promote 4-H. We would like to encourage everyone to wear their 4-H t-shirt or just a green t-shirt with a 4-H pin on Wednesday, October 5 th. Make a goal to tell at least one friend about 4-H and all the fun projects it offers! Other ideas would be to announce at your church, or at school during morning announcements, hand out 4-H pencils, stickers, pens, or flyers, or put up signs in local business windows. The Louisiana 4-H Program has reached out to Texas 4-H to ask for our help in assisting with the flood relief efforts in southern Louisiana. As we all know, the southern part of the state was recently devastated with record rain fall right at the time youth were planning on going back to school. Due to the rains and the damage experienced many youth in the region have not been able to return to school, much less been able to shop for school supplies. The Louisiana 4-H Program is asking for donations of general school supplies which can be distributed to the youth of southern Louisiana. Please drop off supplies at the Extension office.
3 In addition to the Louisiana School Supplies: For 4-Hers that also want to do an additional community service activity on One Day 4-H, Saturday, October 8 th, Goliad State Park and Historic Site is looking for volunteers to help with trail maintenance along the Aranama Nature Trail near Mission Espiritu Santo. An organized volunteer cleanup will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. While some tools will be available, volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves and pruning clippers for trimming small branches. Refreshments will be provided. Attention Club Leaders-This Fall the park is also looking for volunteers to assist with planting native trees and shrubs. Please contact Park Superintendent, Brenda Justice at if you are interested in organizing a day for your club to come out and volunteer CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BIKE RIDE The Annual Missions Tour de Goliad Bike Ride will be on Saturday, October 15 th. We have been asked to work the SAG stops once again. Clubs are asked to get volunteers as in the past. We have also been asked to make homemade cookies. You can bring them to the Extension office by NOON on Friday, October 14 th. The bike riders really appreciate how Goliad County 4-H ers do such a great job at the SAG Stops! Working the SAG stop or making cookies counts as a community service! Additional information and details will be forthcoming as it is provided from the Chamber of Commerce ADDRESS SIGNS Attached are several order forms for signs. We are once again coordinating the effort to get highly visible address signs spread throughout the county to assist EMS in finding addresses in emergency situations. Cost of the signs this year is $15.00 or $16.00 depending on the size of the sign. Order will be placed mid November. This is NOT a fundraiser. However, this is an excellent community service project, and everyone is encouraged to get involved. Additional forms are available in the Extension office, or you can duplicate on your own as needed. As the order forms with payment are collected in the Extension office, orders will be placed. When the finished signs arrive, calls will be made to the buyers to come by and get their signs. If anyone needs assistance mounting the signs, we can offer to help. Be sure to remind sign buyers that the purpose of these signs is to clearly mark the entrance to their home. Appropriate places to mount the signs are gates and fence posts located directly at the entrance.
