1 Register online: We look forward to another great season with the Express family Learn how you can become a part of this special team in your community. Returning swimmers: registration due by 8/1. New swimmer registrations accepted as long as space permits. The Waukesha Express Swim Team has a long history of producing great swimmers BUT we don t just teach swimming Swimmers learn team work, discipline, time management and many other life skills to help them be successful as a child and an adult. We aren t a typical youth sports program. Our professional coaching staff is here to work with swimmers of all abilities; the coaches can teach the necessary skills for any child to excel in swimming if they are willing to work hard, be a good teammate and most importantly, have FUN If that is what you want for your child, then we want you to join our team Minimum requirement to join the beginning swim team group is 25 yards freestyle and 25 yards backstroke. If you are unsure if your child is ready for the swim team, you can attend a try-out night or contact Dan Wohl to make other arrangements (dan@waukeshaexpress.org). See you at the pool We are offering swim team try-outs this fall on the following dates (all try-outs are at Waukesha South Natatorium): August 15, 2013: 5:30-7:00 PM August 20, 2013: 5:30-7:00 PM September 5, 2013: 5:30-7:00 PM If these dates/times don t work for you, contact Dan Wohl, Head Age Group Coach (dan@waukeshaexpress.org) to make other arrangements. WAUKESHA EXPRESS SWIM TEAM 2013/14 IMPORTANT DATES: Open House, Waukesha South High School, 6-8 PM: Monday, September 9 Fall Session Dates: Tuesday, September 10 - Saturday, November 30 (12 weeks) Winter Session Dates: Monday, December 2 - Thursday, February 27 (13 weeks)* *Winter Session for Senior 1 group ends: March 9, Senior 2/Team ends: March 16
2 10 reasons you should join the Waukesha Express Swim Team 1. Professional Coaching Staff: Our coaches have developed some of the best swimmers in our state and even in the United States. They have coached our team to many state championships, and coached numerous Zone, Junior National, Senior National, and Olympic Trials qualifiers. Our staff has been invited to coach at National and Regional level swim camps as members of USA Swimming. We are fortunate to have such a great staff 2. Many extra services: As a USA Swimming Silver Medal Club we have been recognized as one of the top 100 teams in the United States. This recognition provides our swimmers and coaches access to additional services and grants from USA Swimming. The grant funds have been used to purchase state of the art training and video equipment, which directly benefits the swimmers. Coaches use video analysis as part of their daily practice. 3. A great facility: We are fortunate to train in one of the best facilities in our state. 4. Practice & Dry-land Equipment: Our team invests a lot in training equipment and dryland activities; from our bucket system that focuses on swimming specific strength to our many dry land activities. The coaches are always looking for new ways of developing our swimmers as athletes, and keeping it fresh for the swimmers in the process. 5. A place for everyone: We have a wide range of swimming groups which allows for swimmers of all abilities to improve and excel. A large portion of our team consists of novice swimmers, and we are always excited to teach new swimmers the skills to be successful in our sport. Our hope is that they will have the same love of swimming as we do 6. Organized and focused practices: Because our coaches are professionals, they plan for practices in advance, and have plans and goals for each day. 7. Group progression: Our program is designed around a group progression from our 8 & under swimmers all the way through our highest senior training group. This progression allows for sustained improvement through high school and beyond. 8. Teamwork: We pride ourselves in providing a family-like atmosphere, and working as a team Swimming is often seen as an individual sport, but not on our team We excel as a team because we all work together 9. History of success: Express is the oldest team in the state, and has produced champions at every level 10. Social & team events: We offer many extra opportunities to members of our team. From social events as a team or a group, to our clinics that focus on specific skills. If you want more, you can always find it here.
3 Practice Requirements Most groups do NOT have any practice requirements. The Senior Team group does have practice requirements and any swimmer joining that group must talk to Blaine Carlson prior to registering for that group so that they understand their practice requirements. Our schedule is very accommodating and offers flexibility so you can choose a swimming schedule that fits in to your family schedule. Even though we offer practice most weekdays we do not expect swimmers to attend all. We recommend the following attendance for our swimmers: Bronze 2-3 times per week Silver 3-4 times per week Gold 4-5 times per week Senior Determined by coach Practice Equipment Swimmers are required to have their own equipment for practices. All swimmers should also have goggles and a swim cap. If you set up a credit card or bank account (Setup Auto Pay on website) on your swim team account the transaction will automatically process on the due date (1st of the month). Optional fundraising We offer several fundraisers during the year that are voluntary, but your participation can help you offset the cost of swimming. 75% of the profits are credited to your fundraising account which can then be applied to your spring & summer registration. Some of our typical fundraisers are: Scrip Program through Great Lakes Scrip Flower Fundraiser Home Meet Advertising For more information, visit our website, then Team Info tab, Fundraising. Meet Worker Requirements Working at meets gives you an opportunity to get involved It s fun and a great way to meet other parents. That being said new families are not required to work during their first six months with the team. Once our meet schedule is finalized we will notify families of the required number of shifts that will be required. Shifts are determined by the number of meets that we host and the number of family accounts currently active for the session/swim season. Each family has the same requirement regardless of the number of children on the team. Since work sessions are fulfilled mostly by parents it is reasonable to set the requirement the same for all families. Shifts are usually 4-5 hours long, and you can sign up for your shifts online. An will go out to let you know when online sign up is available. We need help in a variety of areas, and most do not require previous experience. Even if your child does not swim in meets, you are required to work at our home meets. The revenue that is generated at our home meets benefits all families. Swimmers 16 years of age and older are able to help with this, along with other family members and friends. If you wish to buy-out of this meet worker requirement, the cost is $65 per shift. If you sign up to work and do not show up, the cost is $100 shift. Communication is key If you have conflicts or need help to meet your family requirement please contact Michael at michael@waukeshaexpress.org. We will do our best to work with you and come up with a plan that works for everyone.
