2 SQUASH The squash teams started their third term off with matches the first weekend back at school against various teams. The girls 1st team struggled as a few of their players were at the Cape Town Hockey Festival, so they went down 4-0 to Rhenish. The boys 2nd team were impressive with a 4-0 victory over Stellenbosch High School. The U15 Boys have just moved up to the A-league because of their impressive performances in the second term, but the Strand outfit was too strong for them. Well done to all who competed. NETBALL The netball girls played against Bridge House in a set of fixtures at Bridge House on the 30 July. The girls struggled to find the goal and unfortunately left Bridge House without a win. 3 CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY FESTIVAL Last week the 1st XI Boys and Girls took part in the annual Cape Town International Hockey Festival, which has grown in prestige over the last few years. Top schools and clubs from England, Netherlands and Zimbabwe took part in the festival this year, with 22 boys teams and 22 girls teams taking part. Our girls side improved throughout the week and on the final day of the festival played some outstanding hockey to beat Bloemhof who is one of the top hockey schools for girls hockey in the country at the moment. The boys performed admirably during the week, only losing 1 game to SACS who were finalists at the Festival this year. The boys were superb defensively during the week, which was the key to their good results. Jade Batchelor won Goalkeeper of the tournament at the Cape Town International Hockey Festival. This is the second year running that Jade has won this prize and we are extremely proud of her. Henry Rahman was also superb during the week conceding only 3 goals. Fantastic displays from both goalkeepers, were testament to all the training they have put in this season. Both goalkeepers, with stellar performances during the week, are awarded with the BMW players of the week. Somerset College Senior School hockey is proudly sponsored by Helderview BMW

4 Our netball teams came back from the holidays a little rusty. Unfortunately we had a tough day of netball against De Hoop in the first week of school with only the U13B team winning their match. Although we faced many losses, it was a wonderful opportunity for the girls as we sent every single team we had to these matches and had maximum participation. The teams redeemed themselves when they played against Hendrik Louw. The weather was played along very nicely this season and the girls played much better netball after some practicing. Congratulations to all the teams, especially those who won their matches. PREP NETBALL PREP RUGBY Rugby versus Beaumont This was the first time we have played Beaumont in a full fixture. It was always going to be tough as we knew that Beaumont would be physical. Junior teams played hard with all U7 teams drawing their matches. U8A boys got the win of the day as they defended well and when they got the opportunity to score they did it in style with Michael du Toit sprinting to the try line scoring the winning try. It was a great match to watch as the boys celebrated every tackle made and every time they stopped Beaumont from scoring. U9 defended the whole first half but lost concentration in the second half and lost the match. Senior teams played well with U11 s continuing their good run of form but lost to a more physical Beaumont. U13 boys could match up with Beaumont attack play in the first half but then worked extra hard and played much better in the second half, although we lost we were proud of the boys and that all teams never gave up. PREP HOCKEY Our hockey teams got straight into action after the holidays as we hosted Somerset West Primary School on 24 July. Overall we did very well, however, the U13A teams found the going tough against hard-running opponents. Our junior teams were very impressive with the way they played, resulting in numerous victories. We had a busy and happy afternoon of hockey at the College when we hosted Gordon s Bay Primary, Applewood Preparatory, Grabouw Primary and Khayelitsha Club. It was a mixed bag of results. Most of our B teams played Applewood s A teams which was a challenge. The last two matches of the afternoon were great, as our U11A boys played their second match of the day and the U13As played against Khayelitsha. The U11 match moved from end-to-end with Khayelitsha sealing a 4 3 victory in the last couple of minutes with a well-taken goal. Our U13A team fought back from being 2 0 down to draw their match 2 2, displaying much determination in a fast-paced match.

5 RUGBY VERSUS SCOTTSVILLE AND WESTERFORD The rugby boys started the third term off with weekend fixtures against Scottsville on 26 uly. The U14 boys had an impressive victory The U15 s drew 22-22, after being 17-3 down at half time. U16 Boys won 22-8 and the 1st XV boys won In tough, wet conditions these were some phenomenal results and the boys managed to play exciting rugby. On 30 July, the 1st and 2nd XV boys played matches against Truro, an English touring side which we host bi-annually. The 2nd XV and 1st XV won narrowly in hard fought affairs, but the game was played in good spirit and our boys played some superb rugby. This past weekend, the boys played against Westerford, the games were all well contested, but we unfortunately were unable to secure victories, other than a terrific performance from the U16 boys. 6 WERF CHALLENGE TRIALS The finals of the Werf Challenge, our oldest traditional inter-house event, will take place on Friday 22 August as part of the Founder s Day celebrations. Trials for this prestigious race starts on Monday 4 August and take place every day (Monday to Thursday) for two weeks, ending 14 August. There will be two opportunities every day to run: lunch break (12h15) and after school at 14h30, from in front of the Manor House. All boys and girls are expected to participate in at least one trial for their house. By Wednesday 20 August the fastest runners in each year group, per house, will be announced to participate in the relay race on Founder s Day as well as the fastest eight boys and girls in the school to participate in the individual finals. The Werf Challenge Trophy is handed to the house with the most points after the final race on Founder s Day. INDOOR CRICKET FACILITY We are delighted to confirm that we have received approval for plans for an Indoor Cricket Net facility which will also be located on our new Sports Campus across the stream. Members of our Cricket Committee have worked tirelessly on this project. With donations from parents within the cricket community, and a contribution of funds from our rowing community, this project will commence shortly. A structure will be built next to the new Astroturf to house the Indoor Nets, as well as provide a space for the ergo facility for rowing. ROWERS RECEIVE SOUTH AFRICAN COLOURS Two College boys have received their South African colours for rowing! Nicholas Oberholzer and Nicholas Farrell are representing South Africa at the U19 Junior World Rowing Championships in Germany this month. An amazing achievement; well done boys!
