7 STI Practice Manager The Center for Medicare Services (CMS) has reported that it rejects 26% of the claims it receives. While that nmber is astonishing, more astonishing is the fact that 40% of those rejected claims are never resbmitted. Using Medicare s statistics, the lost revene per physician is abot 10%. 9 STI Clod STI offers both Client Server vs. ASP Model (Clod), so we are indifferent to the option that yo choose. We are more concerned that yo nderstand the pros and cons of both options. STI Clod is an ASP model option. ASP stands for Application Service Provider, or another poplar name is Software as a Service (SaaS). If yo have done any shopping for medical software, yo have probably already encontered these terms. In reality, the choice between ASP and Client Server is basically a rent verss prchase decision. Choosing an ASP is a rental decision and the client/server choice is a prchase or lease/prchase decision. However, like any decision there are pros and cons that shold be considered. Client Server A client server model is basically one where yor medical practice has the file server in yor office. A server is a compter with a large amont of memory. This is the machine onto which the software is loaded, and all of the patient information is kept. Yo are responsible to maintain the file server, and to complete data back-ps in case of a server failre. File servers typically have a sefl life of abot 5 years and then they need to be replaced. This is a prchase decision. Yo need to pay for software, software pdates and occasionally replace the file server. STI Clod/ASP An ASP model means that STI is responsible for the file server and hosting yor software, data and completing data back-ps. The server is not hosted in yor office bt at a secre site at another location and yor medical office accesses the remote server via an internet connection. This is a rental decision. Yo typically pay a smaller monthly fee. Yo do not need to prchase software or software pdates. Yo do not need to prchase or replace a file server, however yo do need to prchase compter eqipment for local se. Yo are not responsible for making daily backps. Yo may experience interrptions in information access if yo lose Internet connectivity; and the most important factor in this decision is if yo can get a fast, reliable Internet connection in yor office. STI Compter Services, Inc Benefits and Costs So what s the real difference? As is so often the case, cost and convenience are the major difference between these two options. With STI Clod, yo have no large p-front and ongoing costs. Some practices prefer only paying one monthly charge on their credit card rather than mltiple annal charges for software pdates, portal fees, eprescribing fees, etc. Pls yo have no need to complete daily data back-ps, program pdates, bying and maintaining a file server. Yo can also access yor data from anywhere with a web browser. The STI client server model is more like bying a home. Yo are the one responsible for keeping p with maintenance, bt yo will generally be able to pay off the prchase price in a few years and afterwards yo only have to pay for pkeep. In the long rn, owning is always cheaper than renting. Bt yo are responsible for the property and it s harder to pick p and move if something changes. STI Advantages Unlike other vendors, STI offers both a Client Server and STI Clod choice. More importantly with STI Clod yo can convert to an otright prchase price at a later date if yo desire or contine paying monthly. Other vendors may not offer that choice, so how do yo get yor patient data retrned to yo? To really se yor data, yo need the software program and not jst the data. This is a really large STI advantage. With both of the STI options, there is no charge for Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) with insrance carriers for electronic claim sbmission, or ato-posting of the EOMB, or patient eligibility checking. Other vendors charge between $59/month and $79/month for each provider sbmitting electronic insrance claims and between $10/month and $20/month for each provider for their electronic EOMB posting options. 10 STI Is Yor Best Choice Common Sense vs. Nonsense It is nwise to pay too mch, bt it s worse to pay too little. When yo pay too mch, yo lose a little money that is all. 11 STI Revene Cycle Management A sccessfl billing process starts with the right practice management and electronic billing software like the Chart- Maker Medical Site. Once yo ve chosen yor compter technology, the next step is to decide whether to assign the billing fnction to yor own office in-hose staff or otsorce it to an STl Revene Cycle Management (RCM) Partner. The billing process relies on getting the correct patient and insrance information into the system. Errors in data entry reslt in rejections, and it s possible that a claim can be electronically sbmitted bt immediately denied withot ever entering the payer s system for processing. Often, staff in the physician s office forget or don t have time to retrieve the nextday reports that will tell yo if yor claims were accepted. A rejection on this vital report means that yor claim was not in fact sbmitted. If yor staff doesn t catch the error in time, the claim may be rejected for timely filing with no appeal possible. For example, if they can collect an additional $10,000/month yo receive more revene than before sing an RCM Partner, and yor staff is available to do more important work on patient care.
