3 Foreword Andrew Douglas (Is a leading practitioner and author in safety) The National Safety Recruitment Salary Survey 2012 (NSRSS) provides a penetrating insight into industry wages throughout Australia. At a time when the traditional safety roles in CBD construction and manufacturing are under threat, the opportunities in mining, exploration and engineering/construction in more remote areas offer challenges and benefits. The statistics also advise something that safety professionals have known and understood for a long time; safety practitioners gain pleasure from providing a safe workplace (see Feelings about current role - page 9). The NSRSS provides an invaluable tool for business to benchmark wages in recruitment, undertake structured analysis and develop of succession strategies for its safety team. Wage growth and retention strategies will be difficult to manage in a world economy where the Chinese economy is flattening, demand in Europe and Asia remains volatile and the US outlook is uncertain. Without the NSRSS it would be impossible to calibrate rates and expectations within your workplace and support decisions by appropriate evidence. The evidence in the NSRSS is both compelling and reliable. It will be an excellent foundation for decision making in regard to safety practitioners and teams. 3

4 Introduction The annual NSR Salary Survey continues to be at the forefront of the industry, providing a definitive snapshot of salaries across the OHS landscape in Australia. With the downturn of the economy and employers tightening their belts, this report provides you with an opportunity to find out exactly what is happening in each sector and help you make informed decisions by offering a thorough market overview as well as the salaries companies have paid for over 1,000 positions across Australia over the last 12 months. Methodology The 2012 Salary Survey provides an insight into OHS WorkCover / Injury Management & Environmental salaries across the Australian landscape (metropolitan & regional) within 28 defined industries. This survey has been conducted by National Safety Recruitment Pty Ltd, who surveyed a range of OHS, WorkCover / Injury Management & Environmental personnel from graduate / entry level to executive / leadership. The survey was conducted via an online platform. All information identifying individuals and/or individual organisations has been removed from the final report to ensure anonymity & confidentiality. Survey results have been compiled and analysed to provide the most critical information. Responses from 740 (2011:556) individual organisations have been included. A wide range of business sizes and industries have been covered. Survey participants were sourced from the National Safety Recruitment Pty Ltd databases. In total 1,378 responses were received. After independent auditing of the data provided to ensure its integrity, 1,269 (2011:974) responses were deemed suitable for comparing and analysing our survey results. Only completed surveys have been used for survey analysis. 4

5 Key findings & summary Wages across top paid industries at an all-time high Despite the volatile world economy, Australia s wave of mining developments remain, continuing as one of the highest paid industries in the country. With mega mining projects driving demand for workers with the right skills and experience, we are seeing total salary packages as high as $557,000 per annum. Mining giant BHP predicts some 170,000 mining workers will be required over the next five years and in Queensland a Growth Outlook Study shows an additional 40,000 workers will be required for the resources sector before the end of the decade. As the Mining, Oil & Gas, and Construction sectors continue to dominate the salary scale it leaves other industries feeling the pinch. Commitment to safety is strong Commitment to safety is on the rise with 77% of respondents saying their employer is committed to safety with only 13% disagreeing or neutral. In recent years the focus for organisations has been centered on the concept of Zero Harm, but until now fears about reduced productivity have outweighed organisations efforts to minimise OHS risk. Looking back to the 2009 and 2010 Australian Institute of Management (AIM) Business of Safety survey, 66% of OHS personnel believed their organisation had a wellentrenched culture. OHS Salaries 90% above average Australian salary Wages across the OHS sector (NSRSS: $133,854) are at least 90% above the average Australian salary (ABS: $69,992). As workforces strike across the nation, unhappy with wages, career prospects in health and safety remain strong. Full time employment is solid with 94% of respondents indicating they are employed in a full time capacity. Attractive salary packages are enticing people into OHS with superannuation above 9% (25%) and bonus (82%) on offer. 77 say their employer is committed to safety Oil & Gas / Petroleum, Mining, Construction continue to dominate the salary scale Average salary $133,854, 90% above average Australian salary of $69,992 *ABS Attractive salary packages entice people into OHS Despite economic uncertainty, full-time employment is solid (94%) With figures on the rise, the proposed introduction of OHS harmonisation legislation has seen liability placed directly on directors and CEOs, which perhaps, in part, has played a role in the shift in ownership of a workable OHS model that employees can engage with. 5
