3 3 Foreword Andrew Douglas (Is a leading practitioner and author in safety) The National Safety Recruitment Salary Survey (NSRSS) paints a clear picture of the trends affecting workplaces across Australia. The wage growth in the traditional areas of OHS (manufacturing, mining and construction) remains tight. There should be no surprises there. The mining sector is tightening and although there is some wage growth, it is not as significant as in prior years. The oil and gas and pharmaceutical areas remain robust. However, the wage growth and opportunities in OHS are slowing. There has been a dramatic draw back on access to or achievement of bonuses in OHS. This reflects tighter corporate budgets and changes in remuneration and benefits structures for senior employees. The NSRSS provides invaluable benchmarking and trend information about OHS in Australia. Perhaps, amongst the gloom, the most exciting aspect of the numbers is Australia s businesses continuing growth in its commitment to safety. Happily this means continued growth, although modest, in jobs and wages in the OHS market. The world s economy is in flux. Chinese demand and production is now structurally flatter. Europe shows few signs of emerging from the darkness of the last five years. The US is starting to move and parts of Asia continue to show growth. In a globalised market, how you recruit, pay and reward OHS practitioners must be carefully measured against reliable evidence. The best evidence is the NSRSS.
4 4 Introduction The annual NSR Salary Survey continues to be at the forefront of the industry, providing a definitive snapshot of salaries across the OHS landscape in Australia. As we begin to see a shift in the resources sector, this report provides you with an opportunity to find out exactly what is happening in each sector and help you make informed decisions by offering a thorough market overview as well as the salaries companies have paid for over 1,000 positions across Australia over the last 12 months. Methodology The Salary Survey provides an insight into OHS WorkCover / Injury Management & Environmental salaries across the Australian landscape (metropolitan & regional) within 28 defined industries. This survey has been conducted by National Safety Recruitment Pty Ltd, who surveyed a range of WHS, WorkCover / Injury Management & Environmental personnel from graduate / entry level to executive / leadership. The survey was conducted via an online platform. All information identifying individuals and/or individual organisations has been removed from the final report to ensure anonymity & confidentiality. Survey results have been compiled and analysed to provide the most critical information. Responses from 626 (2012:740) individual organisations have been included. A wide range of business sizes and industries have been covered. Survey participants were sourced from the National Safety Recruitment Pty Ltd database. In total 1,263 responses were received. After independent auditing of the data provided to ensure its integrity, 1,103 (2012:1,269) responses were deemed suitable for comparing and analysing our survey results. Only completed surveys have been used for survey analysis.
5 5 Key findings & summary Mining remains strong despite outlook Until recently Australia has been riding high on the mining boom, but recent falls in commodity prices and a slowdown in the Chinese economy has seen a shift away from resources towards domestic consumption. With wages at all time highs, we are now beginning to see a pull back in the resources sector. According to this survey, mining has dropped to number four in the Top 5 Paid Industries behind Oil & Gas / Petroleum, Chemical and Pharmaceutical despite rising from an average salary of $174,700 in 2012 to $186,673 in (up 7%). Safety leadership remains strong with 76% (2012:77%) of respondents saying their employer is committed to safety Oil & Gas / Petroleum continues to dominate the salary scale, mining and construction down Full time employment remains solid at 94% (2012:94%) Those seeking a pay rise may need to think again Workers are expected to receive on average a 3.5 per cent pay rise this financial year, the slowest growth in wages since the financial crisis in As the Australian jobless rate is expected to rise and consumer confidence weakens, employees seeking pay rises may need to think again. This report shows more than 60% of staff would seek a 10-20% pay increase for their next role. Softening wages growth may mean employers need to focus on other factors besides remuneration to retain and motivate their staff. Increased job satisfaction is a viable option as the main driver for people choosing to move on (49%). Average salaries up across the board but bonuses down Average total salary packages for roles reported on in 2012 have increased across the board. WHS/EHS Group Manager / General Manager / Director positions saw the largest increase jumping a big $44,7689 (17%) from $256,250 in 2012 to an average total salary package of $300,939 in. Whilst wages may have increased, those entitled to bonuses fell by almost 50% to stand at 42% (2012: 82%).
