1 We Aren t BOGGLED By Words For further information contact Samantha Wilbur South McKeel Academy 2222 South Edgewood Drive Lakeland, FL (Route A) samanthawilbur@ mckeelschools.com n PROGR AM OVERVIEW n OVER ALL VALUE We Aren t BOGGLED By Words! is a program designed to help students learn and review their sight words while using games they are already familiar with playing. This program is a great way to get your students engaged and excited about studying their sight words and learning with their friends. The overall value of this program is that it can change the way you teach sight words and the way your students learn sight words. Your students will go from learning with flash cards and word wall lists to playing games. They will look forward to and want to practice their words while playing Twister or any of the other games. We Aren t BOGGLED By Words! uses games like Twister, Candy Land, Boggle, Scrabble, and Bananagrams to review sight words. The students play these games and help each other with the words they are currently learning and review words that have already been taught. The teacher is in complete control over which words are included in each game. This program was created for a first grade classroom with eighteen students. It can easily be adapted to any grade level. Simply use the words that are appropriate for your age group. Not only will your students be having fun but they will be learning! They will be challenging themselves and helping each other to learn their words and learn them quickly. They are not just memorizing them for a short time but they are remembering them forever. When they see these words in their reading books they will have no problem recalling them and even say things like, Hey! I saw this word in Candy Word Land yesterday! It s exciting to see students excited to learn and having so much fun while they are learning. The time spent implementing this program will pay huge dividends in your students fluency skills. This can easily be adapted for any grade level by using different word lists. You could also use vocabulary words from Science, Social Studies, and Math units. It is also easy to differentiate instruction with these games since changing levels is as easy as changing the words used. n LESSON PLAN TITLES 1 Sight Word Journals 2 Word Twister 3 Candy Word Land 4 Boggle 5 Scrabble Points 6 Bananagrams n MATERIALS Materials for each lesson are listed with each lesson plan. Overall materials budget including pricing and vendors follows the lesson plans. n ABOUT THE DEVELOPER Samantha Wilbur graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Florida State University. She has taught 1st Grade at South McKeel Academy in Lakeland since it opened six years ago. 2 Lesson Plan No 1: Sight Word Journals n SUBJECTS COVERED Reading (sight words) n GRADES First n OBJECTIVES Students will recognize and increase their number of sight words quickly and accurately through playing games. n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS RF.1.3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. n MATERIALS Appropriate grade level sight word list Blank White Book Marks Assorted Fun Pencils Composition Notebooks Pencils n DIRECTIONS Each week introduce the words to the students and talk about them as a group. Then have students write the sight words in their journal. The students will use these journals during Scrabble Points and Boggle as well. At the end of the week, each student should have written each word at least once and used each word in a sentence. The students will also be able to use their journals during writing to add new word wall words as needed, and refer back to their journals for extra practice when necessary. n EVALUATION/ ASSESSMENT The assessment for We Aren t BOGGLED By Words! is a simple sight word check sheet which has been attached. The 1st Grade sight words are listed by each quarter. The students are tested each nine weeks on their sight words. This allows the teacher to easily keep track of all the words each student has learned and needs to work on. This can easily be adapted for any grade level by using different word lists. You could also use vocabulary words from Science, Social Studies, and Math units. It is also easy to differentiate instruction with these games since changing levels is as easy as changing the words used. When students successfully complete a list they receive a fun pencil to use with their Sight Word Journals. They can also have a book mark to decorate and/or write his/her sight words on for fun. 3 We Aren t BOGGLED By Words Samantha Wilbur Lesson Plan No 2: Word Twister n SUBJECTS COVERED n DIRECTIONS Reading (sight words) To prepare the materials, tape one baggie on top of each Twister colored dot so you can slide your word cards inside and change them easily. Print all of your words onto cardstock and cut them out. Then fill each baggie with one of the sight word cards. These words can be changed as you learn new words or need to review old words. n GR ADES First n OBJECTIVES Students will recognize and increase their number of sight words quickly and accurately through playing games. n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS RF.1.3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. n MATERIALS Twister Game Appropriate grade level sight word list White Cardstock Ziplock Baggies Clear Packing Tape Computer Printer Pencils Scissors Blank White Book Marks Assorted Fun Pencils To play one student is the Spinner who calls out the moves. Then, play the Candy Word Land game just like the Candy Land instructions state (in the Candy Land box). However, you cannot move to the colored box that it shows unless you say the word(s) correctly. If you say the word incorrectly, your team will tell you the correct way to say it and you will lose that turn. The first person to reach the finish line wins! n EVALUATION/ ASSESSMENT The assessment for We Aren t BOGGLED By Words! is a simple sight word check sheet which has been attached. Now each student tries to see how many sight words they can find using just the letters they can see. The person who can find the most sight words before the timer goes off wins that round! Everyone must share their words with their team and check their friend s words to make sure they are correct. When they are finished with the first round they can shake it up and play again! Everyone can write their words in their Sight Word Journals. n EVALUATION/ ASSESSMENT The assessment for We Aren t BOGGLED By Words! is a simple sight word check sheet which has been attached. 6 We Aren t BOGGLED By Words Samantha Wilbur Lesson Plan No 5: Scrabble Points n SUBJECTS COVERED n DIRECTIONS Reading (sight words), Math (addition) Students will write the sight words down in his/her Sight Word Journal. Then, they will need to spell each sight word for that week with the Scrabble Tiles. Add up how many points each word equals. Last, write each sight word in a sentence starting with the word that is worth the most points first and ending with the word that is worth the least amount of points. If students have extra time they can find other sight words and see how many points those words are worth. n GR ADES First n OBJECTIVES Students will recognize and increase their number of sight words quickly and accurately through playing games. n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS RF.1.3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. 1.OA.6: Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten; decomposing a number leading to a ten; using the relationship between addition and subtraction; and creating equivalent but easier or known sums. n EVALUATION/ ASSESSMENT The assessment for We Aren t BOGGLED By Words! is a simple sight word check sheet which has been attached. The students will need to work as a team to see how many sight words they can build and keep connected like a crossword puzzle. Start with this week s words and see how you do. Then, add more words from your Sight Word Journal. You can make different lists of words for your students to try to connect or you can stick with your weekly lists. n EVALUATION/ ASSESSMENT The assessment for We Aren t BOGGLED By Words! is a simple sight word check sheet which has been attached. The 1st Grade sight words are listed by each quarter. The students are tested each nine weeks on their sight words. If the students are having trouble making the words into a crossword puzzle, they can try to connect just 2 or 3 words in groups instead of connecting all of the words. The more they play this game the better they get! H H H
