21 Key Observations Sweden in the Global Competitiveness Report Sweden is back among the five most competitive countries in the world Improvements are driven by better rankings on business environment indicators, especially on administrative capacity Wages are still broadly in line with competitiveness However Given its microeconomic capacity and overall context, Sweden s prosperity should be higher than it currently is Long term dynamism in improving competitiveness remains below peers The upward pressure on wages is likely to erode Sweden s historical wage advantages 21 Copyright 2007 Dr. Christian Ketels
22 Implications for Swedish Policy Competent macroeconomic management is important, but not sufficient; Sweden needs a microeconomic strategy as well Slower growth rates in coming years create opportunities for adjustments of the tax system and government investments in addressing business environment weaknesses Sweden needs a visible discussion of the competitive advantages it intends to compete on in the future 22 Copyright 2007 Dr. Christian Ketels
