2 Vocabulary Detente was the name given to the tensions between the U.S and the U.S.S.R. Mutiny an open rebellion against the proper authorities. Politburo the main group of people in a Communist government who make decisions about policy. United Nations General Assembly is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations and the only one in which all member nations have equal representation.. ( ﺟﮭﺎد Jihad) which is a religion. ( اﻟﻤﺠﺎھﺪﯾﻦ Mujahideen) which is any single person who performs Jihad
3 Geography The Afghan-Soviet war took place in Afghanistan, which is located in the Middle East, near Soviet land/territory. This is an image of Afghanistan. This is an image of the US, USSR, and Afghanistan in relation to each other.
4 Key Characters Afghan Leaders: General Secretary Babrak Karmal, President Mohammad, and Hafizulla Najibullah(Dictator) Soviet Leaders: Leonid Brezhnev and Mikhail Gorbachev Leonid Brezhnev
5 Key Characters U.S. Leaders: Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan (These were the two presidents at the time) President Ronald Reagan Mujahideen Leaders: Ahmad Shah Massoud, his nickname was the Lion of Panjshir, along with another leader, Abdul Haq Ahmad Shah Massoud
6 Background Afghanistan was located to the south of the Soviet Empire Russians had been historically concerned with maintaining influence over affairs in Afghanistan The Soviet invasion lasted for about 10 years - started in 1979 and ended in humiliating defeat for the Soviets in 1989 The Soviet decided to invade Afghanistan and they did this in order to expand Soviet power
7 War/Conflict The USSR begins massive military aid to Afghanistan following the revolts against President Nur Muhammad Taraki government. Afghan soldiers attempt a mutiny however, their rebellion is soon crushed Resistance intensifies as multiple Mujahideen groups, who are supported with money and arms from the US, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, fight against Soviet forces and their DRA allies The Soviet politburo decide to invade Afghanistan due to fears of an Islamist revolution and news of Amin's secret meetings with US diplomats in Afghanistan The Soviet defence ministry orders troops into Afghanistan. There is an invasion of tens of thousands of troops by ground and air.
8 War/Conflict The United Nations General Assembly calls for Soviet withdrawal. More than five million Afghans are now estimated to be displaced by the war. New Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev publicly states that he wants to end the war in Afghanistan The DRA, USSR, US and Pakistan sign peace accords and the Soviets begin pulling out troops. The US begins supplying Mujahideen with Stinger missiles, which allows them to shoot down Soviet helicopter gunships.
9 2 Big Events The DRA, USSR, US, and Pakistan sign peace treaties and have the Soviets pull their troops out of Afghanistan These are images of Soviets leaving Afghanistan.
10 2 Big Events For a week, Soviet commandos killed Hafizullah Amin, and tens of thousands of troops invaded by ground and air. This is an image of Soviet troops in Afghanistan.
11 Cause + Effect The Afghanistan War has cost many lives between these time periods. The anger that the war has caused for Afghans has lead to the creation of terrorists groups that have killed thousands of innocent people.
12 Conclusion/Impact Left many Americans having facist and horrible thoughts of the Muslim religion and has caused many more terrorist attacks from groups like ISIS, Taliban, and Al Qaeda on the United States.
