1 A Development Programme for New Preparing for Research-Team Leadership A development programme for new and aspiring research group leaders Staff Training and Development Unit and Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences

2 Preparing for Aim This course is designed to develop your skills as a research-team leader. During the 15-month programme, you will learn how to build and lead a research team, motivate and support individual researchers and develop your role as a manager. Guest presenters include research leaders from across the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences and The University of Manchester, providing participants with the opportunity to meet experts in research-team leadership. Research-active staff from the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences who do not have a formal academic post, but who are: independent research fellows recently appointed as Principal Investigators leading or aspiring to lead a research team senior research associates who contribute to the leadership of a research team. Participants will be expected to attend all relevant sessions and line managers will be expected to facilitate release from other duties to enable successful completion of the programme. The application process Given the intensive nature of the programme, participants will be limited to 15. Applications for the programme should be made on the application form provided on the last page of this booklet. Applications need to be supported by your Head of School (or Division) or immediate Line Manager. Applications will be considered by a panel led by Professor Colin Sibley, Associate Dean for Research. 10 3

4 I. Core workshops A series of highly-interactive workshops are central to the programme. Facilitators will provide advice on key challenges of research-team leadership, while drawing on participants current understanding and experiences. Participants are encouraged to attend the full programme of workshops. All workshops will run from 10:00 to 12:00, followed by lunch. A full timetable with dates and venues will be provided to all participants at the first workshop. 1. Induction and welcome Meet other participants, explore the role of a research team leader, identify your individual team leader style and develop a personal development plan. Guest speakers: Professor Colin Sibley, Associate Dean for Research, Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences Professor Karen Hassell, Chair in Social Pharmacy and Director of the Centre for Pharmacy Workforce Studies, School of Pharmacy Denise Fieldhouse, Staff Development Advisor, Staff Training and Development Unit 2. Leading and developing a team II. Reflective learning A key focus of the programme will be critically evaluating and applying the skills and knowledge gained during the face-to-face workshops. To help with this, participants will be expected to participate in the following programme components: 1. Action learning sets In addition to attending the core workshops, participants will be encouraged to meet in informal, small-group or one-to-one sessions. These will be arranged in consultation with participants and will provide an opportunity to share issues and discuss approaches to resolving ongoing problems. 2. Personal development plan In the first session of the workshop programme, participants will be encouraged to reflect and draw up a personal development plan. This plan will promote acquisition of research-team leadership skills, both during the formal programme and beyond. 5 Programme 13. Negotiating and influencing skills Discuss the attributes of influence and power; identify your preferred influencing style; reflect on negotiation and assertiveness skills. Emotional intelligence Gain personal insight into your preferred leadership style; your preferred way of working; types of behaviour you are likely to find difficult; your emotional style.
