Healthcare Workforce Collaborative Greetings from the South Dakota Healthcare Workforce Center. Staffs of the Center and the Healthcare Workforce Collaborative continue to work at addressing South Dakota s healthcare workforce needs. Read on to see what s noteworthy over the past few months as well as what s coming up in the near future! As always, we welcome any feedback you have regarding these and other workforce development issues. 1
SD Workforce Summit (contributed by Healthcare Workforce Center) Gov. Dennis Daugaard and the SD WINS Cabinet will be hosting regional Workforce Summits to discuss what state, community, business and education leaders can do next to advance South Dakota s workforce initiatives. The Summits are open to the public and will provide a forum to discuss current programs, learn about demographics and workforce trends and determine what strategies to move forward. The day s event includes panel discussion and breakout groups. For more information and to register please go to Dakota State University joins Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (contributed by Dakota State University) Dakota State University is excited to join with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society through the new national HIMSS Academic Organizational Affiliate program. HIMSS is a global, cause-based, not-for-profit organization focused on better health through information technology (IT). This program provides a way to share industry knowledge and educate DSU students on critical issues that will help them succeed in health IT. Faculty and students will have exclusive access to unsurpassed educational content and educational tools to enhance student learning and research, industry news with an improved awareness and understanding of health IT initiatives, networking opportunities and discounted resources. Dr. Dorine Bennett, Program Coordinator for DSU s Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) online graduate degree program is very pleased at the advantages this affiliation will provide. Bennett said, The HIMSS resources available to DSU as an affiliate will contribute to the content of our MSHI courses and the students will benefit professionally from the career development and networking prospects. The MSHI program, which began at DSU in 2009, is intended to produce master s-prepared health informatics professionals for administrative, research, and/or applied health informatics positions. There is no specified prerequisite background, although students are evaluated upon admission and may be required to complete supplemental knowledge courses in the health information or information technology areas, depending on their needs. The online coursework for this graduate degree provides the foundational understanding of informatics across the continuum of healthcare and includes seven core courses related to healthcare information infrastructure and analysis, business of health informatics, data and project management, and research components of health informatics, as well as three elective courses that the students select based upon their skills, interests, and goals. In addition, students complete a capstone experience for their degree, which may be a research project, an applied health informatics 2
project, or an internship. Students are able to immediately apply what they learn to real-life experiences. Dr. Patti Brooks, a regional CIO for Avera Health, has taught courses within DSU s MSHI Program and agrees that the faculty and students will gain by the affiliation. Because of the broad variety of types of healthcare professionals that are members of HIMSS, it seems like a natural association to affiliate with. Healthcare informatics is a diverse and important field of study which addresses how best to use information to improve health care. Pressure continues to mount as to educating the workforce on how to evaluate and use big data analytics to move healthcare forward. By having an affiliation with HIMSS, students will be made aware of programs that are available to assist in the changing healthcare demands and the need for more sophisticated skills in healthcare informatics. For more information on DSU s MSHI program, visit Certified Nursing Assistant Institutes (CNAI) 2014 (contributed by Yankton Rural AHEC) Hopefully you have heard about these before. They are coming around again for 2014! The Yankton Rural Area Health Education Center (YRAHEC) is again offering two Certified Nursing Assistant Institutes for The first one will be held in Yankton June 2-13, 2014 and the second will be in Mitchell on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University July 7-18, A new twist this year is both events will be day camps where students come to the site each day during the two weeks. The Institutes are for students ages Informational materials (brochures, applications, etc.) will be sent to high school counselors and principals the end of March and the information will also be available on our website Since inception, the CNAI has graduated 56 students. These events are excellent opportunities for students interested in a career in healthcare to become a CNA as an occupation or use their training to compliment another career in the field of healthcare. When the Institutes are complete, they will be tested and come out a CNA and ready to go to work Rural Healthcare Facility Recruitment Assistance Program (contributed by the Healthcare Workforce Center) Beginning May 1, applications will be accepted for the 2014 Rural Healthcare Facility Recruitment Assistance Program. The program helps rural medical facilities in South Dakota recruit nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals by providing $10,000 incentive payments to participating health professionals who 3
complete three-year service commitments in communities up to 10,000 people. Applications must be submitted by the employing health facility. Each eligible facility may have up to 3 participants each year. The Rural Healthcare Facility Recruitment Assistance Program was launched in 2012 as part of Gov. Dennis Daugaard s South Dakota Workforce Initiatives (SD WINS). The program has helped place 120 health professionals in hospitals, nursing facilities, clinics and home health agencies in 49 towns across South Dakota. Participating health professionals included nurses, physical therapists, paramedics, pharmacists, dietitians, medical laboratory professionals, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists and radiologic technologists. If you would like to be notified of the 2014 application, please Kelsey.Hanson@state.sd.us, or visit for more information. Students Ready for Rural Healthcare Experiences (contributed by Yankton Rural AHEC) Student applications for the four-week Rural Experiences for Health Professions Students (REHPS) program are currently under review. An announcement pairing students with sites is expected by March 31 with orientation on April 5. Starting its fourth year, the REHPS Summer Experience Program, has grown each year. REHPS is housed at the Yankton Rural Area Health Education Center office. In 2011, three communities welcomed six students and in 2014, 12 communities are set to welcome 24 students. The 2014 sites are: Bowdle, Custer, Miller, Parkston, Philip, Platte, Redfield, Sisseton, Wagner, Webster, Wessington Springs and Winner. The first round of 2014 experiences is tentatively scheduled to begin the week of May 20 th. Learn more at EMT Thoughts Cardiac Care Project (contributed by Office of Rural Health) In the EMT Thoughts, January edition, we first introduced the Cardiac Care Project noting South Dakota as the recipient of $3.7 million in funding over three years from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to purchase lifesaving equipment, the LUCAS 2 Chest Compression System. The Office of Rural Health (ORH) in conjunction with the Office of Emergency Medical Services will be responsible for administering this grant which officially started in January. 4
LUCAS 2 devices will be distributed through regionalized training starting in April. Currently seven regions have been chosen for such training and ORH anticipates this schedule to last six months covering the entire state of South Dakota. Both hospital and pre-hospital personnel will receive education and training concurrently. Since devices will be distributed through regional training, attendance will be necessary to secure a device. Currently, training has been scheduled for Districts 7 through 4. A project website has been created: Training schedules, as noted on this site, will be updated as future dates are identified. If you are a service director and have not responded to a November 2014 mailing, please contact Marty for details. This mailing asked every director to identify one contact person per service. As of this writing, 76.6% of EMS agencies have identified one contact. If you have not completed this task, please do so as soon as possible in order to ensure delivery of your LUCAS 2 device. Per grant specifications, each hospital and EMS agency will receive at least one device. Physio- Control has agreed to honor Helmsley pricing for the duration of the Cardiac Care grant. This would be applicable for services that, under the grant receive one device, but would like a second device for a second ambulance. In such cases, please contact your Physio representative for pricing details. For more information regarding the Cardiac Care Project contact Marty Link at or via at Marty.Link@state.sd.us. HOSA Happenings: SD HOSA To Host 2 nd Annual State Leadership Conference (contributed by the AHEC Program Office) Developing the healthcare workforce pipeline requires exposing kids to health careers, providing healthcare experiences and building relevance from school curriculum to careers in healthcare. South Dakota HOSA Future Health Professionals continues to grow. Currently, we have over 425 SD HOSA members in 11 chapters! That is a growth of over 40% from its inaugural year. Our 2 nd Annual SD HOSA State Leadership Conference will be held on April 3-4, 2014 at the Sanford Sports Complex in collaboration with Avera McKennan Prairie Center, Southeast Technical Institute, Washington Pavilion, All City Pet Care, and Pillar Dental. At the conference SD HOSA members will compete as individuals and/or teams, attend academic sessions, and tour healthcare facilities in the area. Through the Competitive Events Program (CEP) of HOSA, members compete in events including, but not limited to Medical Photography, Biomedical Debate, Physical Therapy, Nursing Assisting, Public Service Announcement, Nursing Assisting, Medical Math and Extemporaneous Poster etc. Through the CEP students create projects, practice procedures, and increase their knowledgebase regarding healthcare career opportunities. Students win awards and earn an opportunity to represent South Dakota at the HOSA National Leadership Conference in Orlando, FL. 5
Academic sessions at the conference will involve hands-on activities in EMT, concussion/impact testing, speech therapy, health career exploration and a break-out on social media and branding/marketing yourself. Licensed health professionals that have volunteered their time to make this event special include physical therapists, dentists, researcher, nurses, and veterinarians. We also have the South Dakota Advertising Federation judging the PSA event! If you would like more information about the SD HOSA State Leadership Conference or would like to attend, please the South Dakota HOSA State Advisor Brock Rops at Brock.Rops@usd.edu or call him at SDSU to Host Health Professions Career Camp (contributed by SDSU) This summer, medically-minded high school students will have the opportunity to preview their potential futures in health care during South Dakota State University s Health Professions Career Camp. The camp, held July 8-11, 2014, is sponsored by Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center and is hosted by SDSU. Students who are entering their junior or senior year of high school next fall are invited to attend and cultivate their interest in health care. The wide-ranging activities, including hands-on lab experiences in human anatomy, pharmacy, nursing, exercise science, nutritional sciences and DNA fingerprinting, as well as visits to local health care facilities, will allow students to explore and discover new facets of medical fields they may not have experienced previously. Campers will have the opportunity to work with SDSU faculty throughout their experience. The camp is also an opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with SDSU s campus and programs. The tentative schedule allows for a trip to the campus Wellness Center, a student panel and a campus tour. The camp is open to 50 participants and the cost of the camp, including food, lodging and all other expenses is $100. The registration deadline is April 15; however the camp usually fills prior to that date. Financial assistance is available to those with a demonstrated need. For more information on the Health Professions Career Camp, including camp registration forms, please visit the health camp website. 6
Kids: Don t Forget to Brush (contributed by Yankton Rural AHEC) Pat Vavra, right, with Yankton Rural Area Health Education Center, delivers story hour toothbrushes to Joyce Brunken, Senior Library Assistant, at the Yankton Community Library. More than 750 toothbrushes were distributed among 10 libraries. Libraries incorporated special stories and other healthy living learning activities. Local youth will have a brighter smile thanks to a project promoting oral health as February was National Children s Dental Health Month. The Yankton Rural Area Health Education Center collaborated with Delta Dental of South Dakota to raise awareness of the importance oral health care plays on the over-all health and wellbeing of children. Several libraries across the southern part of the state, including Yankton Community Library, received dozens of free toothbrushes. The child-size scrubbers come in a rainbow of colors. Yankton Rural AHEC also directed participants to the American Dental Association website, which hosts a variety of facts and fun activities that encourage children to take up the healthy habit. The link is: The toothbrushes were handed out at story hour in February, where children heard Yankton Community Library staff read about taking care of young teeth. Children who develop good oral hygiene will enjoy life long benefits of not only healthy teeth and gums but systemic health as well, said Pat Vavra, K-12 Programming Specialist with Yankton Rural AHEC. Vavra added that exposing youngsters to the importance of healthy teeth and how oral health plays a role in overall health could spark an early interest in healthcare careers. 7
Scrubs Camps/Camp Meds (contributed by the Healthcare Workforce Center) In 2007, the Departments of Health and Education began a partnership to implement one day, hands-on health career awareness opportunities for students. You ve come to know these camps as Scrubs Camps for high school students and Camp Meds for middle school students. The number of camps across South Dakota has grown from 5 camps in 2007/2008 to 16 camps in 2013/2014. The majority of Scrubs Camps are held during the fall of the year, with the remaining camps being held during the spring. In addition to Scrubs Camps, eight Camp Med opportunities will also be available during this school year. Camp Meds offer health career awareness learning opportunities for middle school students. Camp Meds are located in Aberdeen, Chamberlain, Dell Rapids, Parkston, Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Wagner. For more information, visit Interprofessional Disabilities Services Minor (contributed by USD School of Health Sciences) A new minor at the University of South Dakota is complementary to health, human services, education and other helping professions majors. It provides the opportunity for students to develop the competencies required to serve individuals, families and groups whose lives are impacted by disabilities. The U.S. Surgeon General noted increasing evidence that individuals with disabilities have an overall worse health status than those without disabilities. Further, resources to maintain health, prevent secondary conditions, and optimize wellness for persons with disabilities are inadequate The University of South Dakota is responding to this call for action by preparing students to provide quality care to individuals with disabilities through this interprofessional minor. At the completion of the Interprofessional Disabilities Services minor (IDS) students will: 1) Value disabilities in the context of human diversity, illness, life span, and the constructed social and cultural environments. 2) Discuss the importance of interdisciplinary teams, the roles and functions of various team members, and other disability-specific resources in the healthcare system and the community. 3) Communicate effectively and interact respectfully with persons with disabilities. 4) Describe the legal requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act in health care. 5) Discuss the concepts of universal design, beyond that of the structural environment, e.g., for all aspects of support, including medical equipment, staff procedures and training and communication practices. 8
6) Advocate for the rights of the individuals with disabilities and support person-centered approaches to planning, assessment and delivery of services; and 7) Consider quality of life from a person-centered perspective. Introduction to Medical Laboratory Science (Contributed by NESD AHEC) Northeast SD AHEC (NESD AHEC) and the SD Dial-Virtual High School combined forces to offer South Dakota high school students an online Introduction to Medical Laboratory Science course. This collaboration is the first of its kind to SD Dial-Virtual High School and is a creative way to enhance the opportunities for high school students to gain relevant information and start a career path in High School. This semester long course (which will also be offered throughout the summer) is designed to gain student interest in medical lab science. Students enrolled in the Introduction to Medical Laboratory Science course will foster critical thinking beyond basic procedures, creating an awareness of the clinical laboratory responsibilities students have to themselves, to their patients, and to the facilities where they work. The course includes: the organization of health care facilities, the laws and regulations that govern them, common tasks and responsibilities for multiple professions, and safety are all covered. The course uses an integrated approach that allows students to master medical terminology while gaining knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body and disease processes. Students who successfully complete the program may receive credit through the articulation agreement set forth with the South Dakota Technical Institutes in the South Dakota Articulation Agreement State Guidelines. For more information please contact NESD AHEC at Opportunities in Healthcare (contributed by SD Department of Labor and Regulation) Occupational profiles developed by the Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) which focus on high demand and high wage fields will encourage young and non-traditional career planners alike to consider opportunities in healthcare. DLR s workforce development efforts targeted high-demand, highwage occupations because of limited resources for offering training assistance. Targeted occupations were based on: State occupational employment projections to 2020 completed by DLR s Labor Market Information Center Current indicators of supply and demand in occupations as indicated by SDWORKS, DLR s online database of job openings and job seekers Employer input regarding worker and skill shortages 9
Profiles detailing the following information were developed for each of the targeted occupations: a brief description, the related career interest areas, educational requirements, most important skills and abilities required, examples of where most workers in the occupation are employed, employment projections and current wage estimates. The profiles are available in Adobe.pdf format at Registered nurses and general practitioners are two of the targeted occupations profiled. Students Preparing to Help in a Disaster (contributed by Yankton Rural AHEC) Health professions students learned immunization techniques from USD Nursing Faculty members and Community Health Nurses. More than 300 healthcare students met in Vermillion Jan. 31 to ready themselves to assist others in a potential, future disaster. Disaster Training Day, held on the University of South Dakota (USD) campus, prepares future healthcare professionals to assist their communities should a disaster strike. In the past three years, 1,355 students have participated with 567 becoming certified in Core Disaster Life Support (CDLS) from the National Disaster Life Support Foundation (NDLSF). South Dakota is no stranger to disasters. Since the beginning of 2010, there have been 12 federally declared disasters in the state. Along with CDLS certification, students could register with the Statewide Emergency Registry of Volunteers in South Dakota (SERV SD). This registry coordinates the pre-registration of medical and healthcare professionals who are willing to volunteer during disaster situations. Disciplines participating included pharmacy and doctor of nursing practice from South Dakota State University along with the following students from USD: dental hygiene, masters in social work, clinical lab science, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, physician and clinical psychology. The South Dakota Department of Health (DOH), the USD Sanford School of Medicine, USD School of Health Sciences, SDSU, the Regional Training Center for Upper Midwest and the Yankton Rural Area Health Education Center (YRAHEC) coordinated the event. The day was funded by the South Dakota DOH through a federal Health and Human Services grant. For more information about South Dakota disaster preparedness training, contact Cheri Buffington, REHPS Program Manager at YRAHEC, in Yankton, SD, at
