3 Sport and exercise at Winchester We provide high-quality teaching in a friendly learning environment and pride ourselves in the quality of support and guidance we offer students. Staff from the Sport and Exercise department are continually striving to find new and innovative ways to teach and support students. All tutors are interested both in sport and how to teach it. We firmly believe active learning and practical activities as well as directed independent learning to help our students to excel. We have a well-established reputation for educating students in a variety of academic disciplines related to the study of sport and exercise. Many of the staff are actively engaged in their own research. This research continually feeds back into our curriculum to provide areas for debate that are right at the cutting edge of the study of sport and exercise. We believe students do best when they study what they are interested in and so we try and provide as much choice and flexibility for students as possible. Course overview The core aspects of our courses are based around academic disciplines, or course elements, we call strands. Each strand is made up of multiple modules which form the building blocks of each course. The way in which these strands relate to the courses is explained in the pages which follow. Learning and teaching Course delivery is reflected in a balance between lectures, seminars, workshops, practical and laboratory work and tutorials. The programmes also structure work in between sessions by setting tasks for students to prepare for following sessions. However, many sessions are made up of a mixture of teaching styles and learning activities. We also encourage students to work together and support each other in small groups. Assessment The majority of the work in the sport and exercise programmes is based on coursework. This coursework includes assignments such as essays, laboratory reports, presentations, practical skills assessments, role plays projects, group debates, case studies and the dissertation. Although there are some examinations, many of these are based around seen papers. Such diversity ensures students become competent at expressing themselves academically through a number of different types of assessment. Sporting opportunities Although the curriculum of the sports programmes at the University of Winchester does not necessitate active sports participation, or the requirement to be of a certain sporting standard, there are numerous sporting opportunities available to students. In terms of sports participation, students can join any of the sports clubs run by the Student Union. Students with more serious sports commitments are provided for at almost any level by sports clubs in the Winchester and Southampton area. Career opportunities Sports, leisure, tourism, management, education, fitness, research and health are all relevant graduate pathways. Sports Coaching graduates are particularly suited to working as sports coaches and they are also able to pursue careers in sports development or as physical educators Sport Coaching and SPC.indd 3 26/08/ :39
4 Sport at Winchester All of our courses are designed to provide students with a wide range of transferable skills including the ability to present, think and write in an informed and critical manner, as well as research, debate, work in a group and communicate effectively. These skills are valued in a range of careers, including those not directly related to sport. Many students also continue on to study for postgraduate qualifications to further enhance their employability. New innovative master s level programmes are constantly reviewed to ensure that they are at the forefront of contemporary study Sport Coaching and SPC.indd /08/ :39
5 BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching Course overview Central to the Sports Coaching degree course is the belief that coaching theory and knowledge only becomes relevant when applied in practice. In fact, it is out on the playing field, the track and/or the sports hall that we really find out what works, and the best coaches are those who are able to reflect critically on their own practice, and look for ways to enrich their knowledge. Consequently there is a heavy emphasis within this programme on students being coaches, and using theoretical knowledge to reflect on their own coaching practice. This is supported by a number of extra-curricular development opportunities, made available to our coaching students in the course of their time with us. These vary from traditional SportCoachUK workshops, to more cutting edge performance and video analysis courses that will enrich the student experience whilst at the university. In terms of coaching theory, the programme is uniquely focused on the disciplines of sports coaching, sports development and research methods. Students are provided with the knowledge base to critically engage with contemporary research related to sports coaching and sports development and then test this research in practical settings. Sports Coaching is not offered in the Combined Honours Programme. Single Honours As a Single Honours degree programme, the course includes a combination of the following strands. Sports Coaching Practice strand The sports coaching strand enables students to apply theory to a variety of practical coaching situations. The modules within this strand have been designed to introduce generic coaching principles, with students being given the opportunity to demonstrate these in their own areas of interest from team to individual sports. The course takes the view that coach education and development is an important element of improving sports performance at all levels. Therefore we aim to enable students to understand the importance of: communication from coach to athlete, putting theoretical principles into practice, and examining coaching from learning, teaching and analysis perspectives. In addition, students are involved in coaching consultancy work in the local sporting community to enhance their employment prospects and deepen their understanding of sports coaching in practice. There are opportunities to gain coaching qualifications in tandem with these modules. Sports Development strand The modules within the sports development strand aim to connect the world of coaching to wider community and performance development structures. The aim here is to investigate how politics and policy are the catalysts of specific development and coaching initiatives. The specific issues discussed are focused around how inequality affects both the coaching profession and sports participation in general; how sport is resourced; and how sport is used both to develop local communities and, for its own sake, in performance and elite models. Sports Coaching Science strand This strand of modules is based around the application of aspects of sports science to the world of sports coaching where this knowledge requires a unique style of interpretation and communication. Certain aspects of applied sports biomechanics (the analysis of movement), physiology (principles of training) and psychology (where the roles of sports psychologists Sport Coaching and SPC.indd 5 26/08/ :39
6 BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and coaches collide ) are covered in this strand to provide students with a science toolkit for sports coaching. Research Methods strand This strand seeks to develop a familiarity with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and apply these to various sporting contexts. The acquisition of such skills not only underpin learning from coursework in other strands, but is also a prerequisite for completion of the dissertation. The use of technology in a performance setting, such as video match analysis, is also an essential element of the strand. In particular, this strand provides a unique opportunity for students to become accredited performance analysts in conjunction with Dartfish analysis technologies. The dissertation is designed to provide an opportunity to study an area which students are most interested in. It represents the most independent piece of research that is carried out at undergraduate level. Students are supervised throughout this process but are expected to take increasing responsibility for the development of this piece of work. 8 BSc (Hons) Sport Psychology and Coaching Course overview The Sport Psychology and Coaching programme is an exciting degree combining the principles and practice of coaching with the psychological underpinning for enhancing sport performance. The degree incorporates a wide range of specific knowledge essential to excel in the modern sport and exercise industry including coaching practice, sport psychology, coaching science, performance analysis and research methods. The formal curriculum is supported by a wide range of extracurricular development opportunities, made available to our students while studying with us. These vary from traditional SportCoachUK workshops, to more cutting edge performance and video analysis courses that help to enrich the student experience whilst at the university. The programme is ideal for students interested in careers such as, sport psychology, performance management, sports coaching, sporting participation, and teaching. Single Honours As a Single Honours degree programme, the course includes a combination of the following strands: Sports Coaching Practice strand The sports coaching strand enables students to apply theory to a variety of practical coaching situations. The modules within this strand have been designed to introduce generic coaching principles, with students being given the opportunity to demonstrate these in their own areas of interest from team to individual sports. In addition, students are involved in coaching consultancy work in the local sporting community to enhance their employment prospects and deepen their understanding of sports coaching in practice. There are opportunities to gain coaching qualifications in tandem with these modules. Sports and Exercise Psychology strand The aim of the psychological strand is to enable students to make an informed assessment of those psychological factors that are thought to influence an individual s involvement and performance in sport and exercise. Students examine ways in which psychological constructs influence sporting and exercise involvement and behavior. Furthermore, students explore how elite athletes cope with the expectations, experiences and outcomes of high-level competition, as well as examining what motivates the child and amateur performer to both become and remain involved in sport and exercise. Further components help adopt a more social psychological perspective. Sports Coaching Science strand This strand of modules is based around the application of aspects of sports science to the world of sports coaching where this knowledge requires a unique style of interpretation and communication. Certain aspects of applied sports biomechanics (the analysis of movement), physiology (principles of training) and psychology (where the roles of sports psychologists and coaches collide ) are covered in this strand to provide students with a science toolkit for sports coaching Sport Coaching and SPC.indd 8 26/08/ :39
