Details Tel: UCAS code (if appropriate) 12. Relevant QAA subject benchmark/ Sociology, Anthropology and Health Studies Professional, statutory and regulatory body guidelines 13. Date of production of specification November Date of programme review 2018/ Educational aims of the programme The programme offers a unique interdisciplinary degree that provides students with a high quality interdisciplinary education in the social and environmental causes of health and illness and the relative effectiveness of interventions designed to tackle disease and alleviate inequalities in health. It is taught jointly by world leading departments across the Schools of Biomedicine and Social Science and Public Policy at King s, thus bridging conventional disciplinary divides between the medical and social sciences. The specific educational aims are to provide students with the capacity to: Understand the key social, economic and cultural factors that shape the nature of health and disease and which explain entrenched inequalities in the provision of health care worldwide. Explore the historical development of health care systems; critically examine key aspects of their current management, and assess the wider political environment in which they operate. Identify and critically evaluate the social, ethical and economic implications of advances in contemporary biomedicine and health care interventions across different scales. Broaden their understanding of health care systems, policies and interventions and biomedicine in practice through internships and study abroad options. BSc students will strengthen their knowledge of clinical challenges in healthcare through completion of an elective pathway in a specialised area of biomedicine. BA students will strengthen their knowledge of interdisciplinary approaches to the study of key aspects of global health and social medicine through completion of optional modules in other departments in SSPP at King s. Enhance students interpersonal, research and communicative skills and thus contribute to their employability in the health care sector and capacity for life- long learning. 16. Educational objectives of the programme/programme outcomes (as relevant to the SEEC Credit Level Descriptors) The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding and skills in the following areas: Knowledge and Understanding The programme provides a knowledge and understanding of the following: How social, political and economic factors shape social and scientific understandings of health and disease; These are achieved through the following teaching/learning methods and strategies: Knowledge is acquired by students through a combination of lectures and

the provision of health care and the development of new technologies for treatment and maintenance of well being in both national and international contexts. 2. The main subject areas of analyses will be: a) The social construction of health and disease b) The history and contemporary operation of global health care systems b) The implications of radical new advances in biomedicine such as genomics stem cells and neuroscience for health care provision. c) The threats to health posed by global pandemics and bioterrorism and the implications for global biosecurity. d) The ethics of biomedical policy and practice in the Global North and South. Graduates will play important roles in devising health policy and health care delivery systems for national and global health agencies and organizations; in assessing the implications of new treatments for disease and in reducing disparities in global health care provision. guided student-centred learning. Lectures are normally employed to convey key information, demonstrate the broad structure of a topic, and explain more complex material. This provides an explanatory framework for student-centred learning which occurs in associated seminars, workshops and tutorials. Here, a greater depth and/or breadth of knowledge are acquired through a combination of activities. These usually encompass further readings, involvement in debates and presentations, exercises in critical thinking and research for coursework assignments. These become more intellectually demanding as the degree programme progresses. Optional modules in second and third year provide a deeper analysis of topical issues in the fields of global health and social medicine and students complete a dissertation based on original research in the field in their final year. The interdisciplinary nature of the degree is reflected in the programme structure which requires students to complete core and compulsory modules in the sociology of Global Health & Social Medicine (GHSM) whilst completing a compulsory (but elective) pathway in options offered EITHER by the School of Biomedicine (BSc route) OR in allied SSPP (BA route) at levels 4, 5, and 6. Assessment: All learning outcomes related to knowledge and understanding are assessed. Assessment methods are specified in each module outline. Formative assessment is provided both informally, through verbal feedback from tutors on students contributions in tutorial classes, and formally through written and verbal diagnostic feedback on coursework assignments. Summative assessment is achieved through a combination of examinations and coursework assignments. Marks will also be awarded for tutorial attendance and participation.

Skills and other attributes Intellectual skills: Develop an ability to critically assess the ways in which social, political, economic and cultural factors shape understandings of health and disease and shape interventions designed to address them. Learn to construct a reasoned argument that is sustained by reference to evidence gathered from a variety of primary and secondary sources. The ability to analyse, synthesise and critically evaluate material derived from a range of sources. The ability to learn and undertake research independently. the ability to plan, develop and execute a substantial independent research project. The ability to apply ideas and knowledge to a range of situations and integrate knowledge gained from different disciplinary approaches to the same subject. These are achieved through the following teaching/learning methods and strategies: All individual modules require students to utilise one or more elements of these intellectual skills in preparing material for tutorial classes and coursework assignments, participating in tutorial class discussions, and/or in answering some examination questions. Students acquisition of these intellectual skills is embedded through particular activities including but not limited to: Independent but guided reading of key texts and critical evaluation of their content in preparation for lectures, classes, seminars and tutorials. Collaborative work in group and peer discussions. Research and development of presentations in seminars and tutorials The development and implementation of a robust independent research strategy The construction of reasoned and well supported arguments in extended essays and in the dissertation. Assessment: Intellectual skill development is formally assessed using a range of methods including assessment of coursework assignments; unseen examinations; oral presentations and successful completion of exercises set for participants in tutorials and seminars. All of these forms of assessment require students to demonstrate the acquisition of intellectual skills including, for example, their ability to undertake critical analysis or to evaluate evidence.

Practical skills To work collaboratively with practitioners from different disciplinary backgrounds The ability to identify and source and assess secondary literature and primary research material The ability to assimilate information generated in different disciplinary contexts Present findings in a professional manner, both orally and in writing The ability to use appropriate information technology for gathering, processing and presenting material These are achieved through the following teaching/learning methods and strategies: All students must take modules in the social sciences together with those from EITHER the School of Biomedicine (BSc route) OR allied departments in SSPP (BA route) and in so doing will acquire the skills to work collaboratively with a variety of practitioners from different disciplinary backgrounds. The student centred learning exercises set in tutorials, workshops and seminars will provide students with advanced skills in research and literature acquisition; to deploy informational technologies effectively to undertake research and dissemination activities; to present their work effectively to a mixed consumer base. In addition to assessed modules, supplementary access is offered to one day refresher courses in key biomedical terms and concepts to assist BSc route students who enter the degree programme with only GCSE science skills. Assessment: Generic/transferable skills The ability to develop and sustain independent learning skills The ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a team The ability to develop an intellectual capacity for critical enquiry and practical skills of problem solving. Adequate development of practical skills is assessed partially indirectly and partially directly through successful performance in key assessment tasks including performance in extended essays, unseen examinations, presentations and group exercise work. These are achieved through the following teaching/learning methods and strategies: Development and utilisation of generic/transferable skills are an element of every module on the degree programme, and are enhanced as students progress through their degree. For example, active participation in tutorial class discussions at all levels allows students to develop their communication skills, while time

The ability to develop selfmanagement strategies to improve personal effectiveness. The ability to make best use of educational technology, software and social media to research and disseminate key findings. The ability to communicate findings clearly and effectively in both written and oral modes of presentation. management develops as students are given the skills to manage submission deadlines throughout the year. Assessment: Students must employ all of these generic transferable skills if they are to excel in this degree programme and they are given explicit instruction in each through the academic practice elements of the Research Practice and Design Studio module in first year and progressively within the tutorial programme in the second and third years. The acquisition of these skills are informally assessed through coursework assignments and exercises and through presentation and group work which requires students to work constructively and collaboratively with others. 18. Statement of how the programme has been informed by the relevant subject benchmark statement(s)/professional, statutory and regulatory body guidelines. The 2007 subject benchmark statements for Sociology, Anthropology and Health Studies have been used to inform the knowledge, understanding and skills outcomes for this programme. Each of the benchmark statements are rather generic and subject specific but we have drawn selectively from each to generate an overarching framework of objectives for teaching on the core modules that reaches across these disciplinary boundaries whilst still meeting the key standards established in each. Optional modules will provide greater depth in selected areas, enabling students to determine their own balance between different elements of benchmark requirements. 19. In cases of joint honours programmes please provide a rationale for the particular subject combination, either educational or academic N/A
