Pay attention to how we drive downtown and where we park; you will have to do it Wednesday morning. Wednesday, October 21 Business attire 8:00 am Leave hotel to drive downtown 8:45 am Meet Houser at garage to walk to courthouse 9:00 11:00 am Allegheny County Criminal Courthouse Grant Street, Downtown The US justice system guarantees the right to a trial by jury of peers, or other adult citizens chosen randomly. We watch part of a trial or two and see how juries are chosen. All court proceedings (except some family cases involving children) are open to the public. Noon Lunch with President Judge Donna Jo McDaniel Engineers Building 337 Fourth Ave., Downtown Judge McDaniel is an experienced criminal court judge, and last year her 43 fellow judges selected her to be the president judge, the top administrative post for the county s criminal, civil, and family courts. Like all state and local judges in Pennsylvania,

2 Judge McDaniel was elected, not appointed. She has also worked in the public defender s office and as a city magistrate. She will talk with you about the US justice system, including the division of federal, state, and local courts. Free Thursday, October 22 Business attire 7:30 am Leave hotel for Moon Township 8:30 am Robert Morris University 6001 University Blvd. Moon Township, PA Robert Morris University is a private, suburban university offering 60 bachelor s and 20 graduate degree programs. It is best known for business, and it also has strong programs in actuarial science, communications, information systems, and education. An international visiting scholars program was founded by trustee Patricia Rooney, wife of Steelers owner and Ireland ambassador Dan Rooney. We will meet in the Heritage Room of the Nicholson Center for continental breakfast with faculty. 9:00 10:20 am Discussion: The Pittsburgh Summit Faculty will explain how the G20 summit came to be held in Pittsburgh, and what that means for the region. They will be interested to have a wide-open discussion with fellows about the political goals expressed in the final communiqué, such as how well various countries can coordinate financial sector regulation. 10:30 11:45 am President Gregory G. Dell Omo, Ph.D. Dell Omo will talk about the challenge of running a private, for-profit university in the competitive US system of higher education. He will review some of the strategies he thinks are most important for providing a quality education and attracting more students. Dell Omo worked in business before becoming a professor of management at St. Joseph University in Philadelphia, where he rose to business school dean and vice president for academic affairs before coming to RMU. Lunch Cheeseburgers at Tessaro s We will drive together back into the city for the rest of the day s activities. First we will stop at the hotel if you want to change into less formal attire since the next location may be dirty. 2:00 4:00 pm Carrie Furnace Brownfield Redevelopment Site Mr. Patrick Earley Allegheny County Economic Development Earley is in charge of a brownfield redevelopment project at the 60-acre Carrie Furnace site, formerly part of the massive Homestead Works of US Steel but dormant since about Some of the abandoned steel mills in the region have undergone very successful transformation and redevelopment, and others are still waiting. We will tour the site, including its massive blast

3 furnace machinery that planners want to make into to a future national park on the site, along with residential complexes and some light industry and warehousing. Allegheny County Economic Development is the lead government agency coordinating development for residential, commercial, park, and industrial projects in the county and planning land use. The agency provided $1.3 billion in financing support for its projects last year. 5:00 pm Dinner at Blue Dust The Waterfront, Homestead The Waterfront, a vibrant shopping, residential, and office complex, is on the site of what was once the biggest factory owned by US Steel. Hofbrauhaus SouthSide Works A copy of the famous Munich beerhall, it opened a few months ago at another former steel mill site that has been converted successfully into shops, restaurants, offices and some residential areas. Of course, all Germans know that beer halls are ideal places to get into discussions about politics Friday, October 23 Arts day/casual attire 9:00 am Houser meets you at hotel lobby 9:30 am Breakfast at Pamela s in Oakland This diner, well known locally for its crispy pancakes resembling crepes, is a favorite of Barack Obama. He had the pancakes while campaigning here for the election, and after he won he had the owner make them at the White House for a summer festival. Last month at the G20, Obama complained that he didn t get any while the Japanese prime minister did. 10:30 am Nationality Rooms Cathedral of Learning University of Pittsburgh The lower floors of this dramatic neogothic skyscraper are devoted to more than 20 functioning classrooms that are elaborately designed in the traditional styles of the nationalities of Pittsburgh immigrants. Each was paid for with voluntary contributions from those groups. We also will see Heinz Chapel, modeled after Sainte-Chappelle in Paris but with stained glass mirrors featuring historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln alongside the more traditional saints and biblical figures. Noon Coffee and lunch at Kiva Han, Oakland 1:00 3:00 pm Pittsburgh Glass Center 5472 Penn Ave., East End The Pittsburgh Glass Center is one of the top glass facilities in the United States. Its workshops, classes, gallery, and studio are dedicated to teaching, creating, and promoting glass art. Since it opened in 2001, over two dozen glass artists have moved to Pittsburgh to live and work at the center and over 5,000 students have taken classes from internationally renowned glass artists there. We will tour the center and learn about the daily concerns of operating a private arts and cultural institution.

4 3:30 5:00 pm Lifeboat Ministries Christopher Spann, D.Sc. Spann is a therapist specializing in drug treatment and family counseling. His organization is based in Homewood, a black neighborhood that is one of Pittsburgh s poorest, with a high crime rate. Spann will tell us about the people he works with, and help us to understand what it is like living in Homewood. 5:30 pm East End Brewing Co. Scott Smith, Owner Practically hidden in an old warehouse on the outskirts of Homewood, this simple microbrewery places a premium on sustainability. Smith buys from local farmers when possible, gives his malted barley away as cattle feed, and instead of bottling the beer offers it only in growlers reusable glass 2-liter containers. His beers are becoming very popular at good restaurants. (A growler costs $13, cash only.) Dinner TBD (fellows preference) Andy Warhol Museum The museum is dedicated to the work of one of Pittsburgh s most famous residents. Warhol s family came from Ruthenia, now in eastern Slovakia, and he studied art in Pittsburgh while designing store window displays. His success as a commercial and magazine illustrator in the 50s preceded Warhol s branching out into Pop Art in the 60s and after. The museum is currently showing an exhibit of art by Shepard Fairey, including his iconic Barack Obama Hope image. Saturday, October 24 Outdoor attire Morning Free 1:00 pm Meet at hotel for outdoor excursion Pittsburgh s riverfront area has not always been very appealing. But in recent decades, the city has spent much time and effort in making it a beautiful place to relax and enjoy. Depending on the weather and fellows preferences, we can rent kayaks and enjoy paddling in the center of the city, or we can rent bicycles and go on a ride along the riverfront paths. Duquesne Incline This historic funicular railroad climbs the side of Mt. Washington, across the river from the downtown area. It used to be used by workers coming down from their homes to the factories by the river; now it s mostly for tourists. The top of Mt. Washington offers an unforgettable view of Pittsburgh. Dinner Church Brew Works A former Roman Catholic church that lost its parishioners as people moved out to the suburbs, this was sold and has been converted into a brewery and restaurant. Wood-fired pizzas are the specialty, including a pierogie pizza. Sunday, October 25 Casual attire
