EHS Roles and Responsibilities for Supervisors and Managers Mandatory course for staff who direct and/or manage others during the course of their work or research. Covers legal obligations of supervisors for prevention of injuries and environment impact, and the supervisor s role in the University s EHS Management System. All academic or general staff who direct or manage others. Six courses will be held on: 1) Tuesday 14 March 2) Wednesday 10 May 3) Thursday 8 June 4) Tuesday 8 August 5) Wednesday 11 October 6) Thursday 9 November EHS Roles and Responsibilities for Non- Supervisory Staff Mandatory course for staff to learn about their legal obligations and their role in the University s EHS Management System. All staff. Six courses will be held on: 1) Tuesday 14 March 2) Wednesday 10 May 3) Thursday 8 June 4) Tuesday 8 August 5) Wednesday 11 October 6) Thursday 9 November Environmental Systems Promotion and Implementation Designed to provide information on the University s Environmental Management System, ISO and Environmental Programs, including the Green Office and Laboratory. Environment Advocates. Four courses will be held on: 1) Tuesday 21 March 2) Wednesday 24 May 3) Thursday 17 August 4) Wednesday 18 October Risk Management, Incident Response and Investigation Practical information and practice in applying the risk management process to EHS risks in your work area. This process (Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, Risk Control Plans and Monitoring) is a requirement of the health and safety legislation and environment due diligence. Practical investigation of reported incidents and injuries. What information needs to be collected, correct completion of the S3 forms, identifying contributing factors and setting recommendations. Includes legal obligations, recording, reporting and implementation requirements. All academic and general staff who direct and/or manage activities of others. Four courses will be held on: 1) Thursday 23 March 2) Wednesday 17 May 3) Tuesday 15 August 4) Wednesday 18 October Injury Management and Return to Work Designed as an advisory session for managers and supervisors who may be dealing with employees who have been injured at the workplace. It outlines the process from lodging a claim including injury management practices, medical restrictions, tasks required to be completed, roles and responsibilities and stages of the return to work process. All managers and supervisors. One hour As requested and may be part of another EHS course. 3 HAZARD-BASED TRAINING Note: Hazard-Based Training is available upon request to the EHS Unit only. (For contact details go to www. pb.unimelb.edu.au/ehs/) Workshops are generally two hours and conducted on site. Biohazard Laboratory Training Designed for all staff working with biohazardous agents to understand biological safety, provisions of the OGTR and to implement appropriate work practices All staff working in biological areas. Further Information Contact Paul Taylor, Melbourne Research Office, tel: or Chemical Management Designed to assist staff to understand classifications of chemicals, including dangerous goods, hazardous substances and poisons and to ensure that safe storage handling and disposal procedures are in place. All staff working with chemicals. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) Management How to use the electronic MSDS Management Tool. Staff working with chemicals. Compressed Gas Safety Designed for laboratory and workshop areas where compressed gases are used. Supervisors, managers and delegated staff managing areas where compressed gases are stored and used. Work Station Assessment Practical workstation set-up and manual handling techniques. All staff. Selection and Use of Personal Protective Equipment Designed to assist in identifying where PPE is required and how to set up procedures for use, cleaning, maintenance, storage and replacement. Specific, practical session applying the risk management process to areas where noise limits are exceeded. Laboratory and workshop supervisors, managers and staff where PPE, such as goggles, hearing protection, gloves, boots etc, is used. Supervisors, managers and staff in areas with the potential to exceed legal noise limits or currently using hearing protection. Plant Safety Management Specific, practical session applying the risk management process to plant as defined by the OHS Plant Regulations Laboratory Heads, supervisors and delegated staff responsible for writing risk control plans for plant in their areas of control. Radiation Management Designed to ensure that participants have an awareness of the requirements, both legal and safety-based, dealing with radioactive materials. All staff working in radiological areas. Laser Safety Practical application of the legal requirements in relation to the use of lasers. All staff working where lasers are used. Manual Handling Designed to inform and advise all staff and supervisors on identifying, assessing and controlling risks of muscularskeletal injury. All staff. 58

Courses have a minimum of 6 and maximum of 15 participants. Warden Training Roles and Responsibilities Provides background information, information about roles and responsibilities, and procedures. It also provides information about the types of emergencies that may occur in building and structures around the University. All Wardens (Floor, Area, BECs). Two and half hours Eleven courses will be held on: 1) Tuesday 14 February 2) Wednesday 15 March 3) Thursday 13 April 4) Tuesday 9 May 5) Wednesday 14 June 6) Thursday 13 July 7) Tuesday 8 August 8) Wednesday 13 September 9) Thursday 19 October 10) Tuesday 14 November 11) Wednesday 6 December Suspicious Package and Threat Response Designed to give participants the tools to confidently and promptly deal with the threat of suspicious packages and threats received via communication lines such as phone and mail. Topics include threat checklists, search procedures and dealing with the emergency services. Frontline staff and anyone who potentially could find themselves receiving such a threat. One and half hours Four courses will be held on: 1) Wednesday 29 March 2) Tuesday 16 May 3) Thursday 24 August 4) Tuesday 24 October Environment Health and Safety Building Emergency Controllers Emergency Plans Designed for BECs who coordinate the emergency response and preparedness activities within the building they look after. Topics include an overview of the specific emergency management plans for the building, a tour of their facility covering the emergency response systems and a session discussing emergency response and planning activities. Building Emergency Controllers, Deputy Building Emergency Controllers. As requested 59

5 INJURY MANAGEMENT Emergency Life Support First Aid (Level 1) 21592VIC Offers basic first aid skills to staff, who have the role of First Aider in a low-risk workplace, until medical help arrives Topics include patient assessment, unconsciousness, resuscitation, hygiene, identifying and managing the treatment of acute emergencies such as asthma, choking, heart attack, sprains, shock, and wound management. Appropriate Government legislation which relates to first aid and record keeping will be covered. The certification, 21592VIC, is valid for three years with an annual CPR update recommended. No refresher course is available and, if necessary, Emergency Life Support First Aid should be repeated. Appointed First Aid Officers in administrative areas and staff required to provide first aid in low risk areas such as administrative departments, libraries, or lectures. Note: Participants must be vaccinated, or be willing to be vaccinated, against hepatitis. (The cost of vaccination is additional to the course cost and is payable by participants departments. It may be arranged through Health Services by contacting the Occupational Health Nurse on tel: who can provide further information, including payment details.) Cost $85 per participant The supervisor, when approving their staff member s application, must provide in the Note field, a full Chart of Accounts string, as well as their name and contact number. They will also be able to treat injuries to bones, muscles and joints; treat burns and scalds; irrigate an eye; treat and control bleeding and shock; recognise signs of poisoning, concussion and extremes of heat and cold and maintain the casualty until medical help arrives. The certificate, 21593VIC, is valid for three years with an annual CPR update recommended. A two-day refresher course is available for staff who have previously attended First Aid (Level 2). Staff with first aid responsibilities in high-risk areas such as student facilities, laboratories, animal houses, childcare facilities and workshops. Also staff who take students on excursions, or who undertake research in remote areas or overseas. This course is a prerequisite for specialist first aid courses such as remote area first aid or childcare. Contact the EHS Unit for further information on the availability of these courses. 6 First Aid Refresher (Level 2) 21593VIC Offers a higher level of skills to First Aiders in high-risk workplaces, and includes discussion of relevant Government legislation in first aid, risk assessment, kits, and appropriate record-keeping. Topics include patient assessment, unconsciousness, resuscitation and good hygiene procedures. Participants will be able to identify, manage and treat acute illness such as heart attack, stroke, asthma, choking and diabetes. Two days 9:00 to 17:00 and 9:00 to 15:00 Closing 1) Tuesday: 11, 18 July 1) 20 June 2) Tuesday: 14, 21 November 2) 24 October Applied Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) VBP112 Provides participants with basic life support skills to be performed in the first few minutes of a life-threatening situation until medical help arrives. Resuscitation skills are taught using manikins for adult, child and baby CPR and Expired Air Resuscitation (EAR). Good hygiene procedures are emphasised to prevent cross-infection. The course is practically oriented with small group activities, summary questions and notes to reinforce learning. Staff who may encounter a life-threatening emergency and those staff updating resuscitation skills annually to maintain currency of First Aid (Level 2). Note: If you are undertaking Emergency Life Support First Aid (Level 1) 21592VIC or Provide First Aid (Level 2) 21593VIC this year, it is not necessary to enrol in CPR. Half-day 9:00 to 13:00 Closing 1) Thursday 13 July 1) 22 June 2) Tuesday 31 October 2) 10 October The Parkville Campus of the Centre for Ambulance and Paramedic Studies provides first aid training and special ambulance related courses to the general public, government agencies, and other agencies who require a specifically designed course. The training courses and programs are delivered by Instructor Trained Ambulance Paramedics. The assessed courses are registered on the State Training Board Register. Additionally, these courses have National Training recognition.
