1 Welcome to Wrens Reception Class Wrens Reception Class Information Booklet

2 Teacher: Miss Emma Sayers Teaching Assistant: Ms Jennifer Migliari Welcome to Wrens Reception Class! I hope this booklet will provide you with most of the information you require regarding you However, if you have any further questions, please feel free to arrange an appointment with me. As part of my planning time I will be out of the classroom on Monday afternoons, but may still be available if you need to speak to me. During my non-contact time Mrs Sonia Peloe will teach the Wrens class. Starting School The school day starts at 8.55am when the children have an open registration. Lessons commence at 9.10am and the school day ends at 3.20pm. At the beginning of the Autumn term, the children have the opportunity to get used to their new school environment by attending school for only part of the day. This eases the transition After this initial two week period, the class is united and more routines are added to the day. During the first half-term, you may come into the classroom with your child if you wish, however I do find that the children settle better when they are able to engage with the classroom activities and parents say goodbye quickly and promptly. This enables the children to gain their own independence, but also allows for a calmer and quieter environment in the classroom, where we can then efficiently begin the day. We do ask that all Parents have left the classroom by 9.10am as this is when our carpet time begins and children need to be ready to start.

3 At home-time you can collect your child from the fence by the Reception class area. Please stand by the fence so that I can see you from the classroom, as sometimes I am not able to leave the classroom to look out on the playground. Please make sure that your child is collected on time as young children are easily upset if they think they have been forgotten. Please also inform a member of staff if a different carer is picking up your child, as we cannot g to be late please contact the school. Learning in Wrens Class Learning in the Wrens class is based primarily interests and what motivates them to be effective learners. They are encouraged to explore the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum with support from experienced, enthusiastic and well qualified staff. During the school day, the children will take part in whole group sessions, learning phonics, English and maths, as well as topic-based activities. The children work in small groups with an adult at a focused activity everyday. For the rest of the time they are free to access the continuous provision, choosing to work with water, sand, paint, scrap materials, playdough, role play or construction toys. Your child will also use an ipad, the interactive white board and technological toys.

4 Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum There are seven areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and we ensure the children have access to a range of learning activities in each of these areas: Communication, Language and Literacy talking, listening and interacting with their peers as well as adults. Physical Development learning to run, jump, climb, hop, hold a pencil and use scissors correctly. Personal, Social and Emotional learning how to look after themselves, how to behave and to care for other people. English learning how to read and write. Maths learning about numbers, counting, shapes, measurement and time. Understanding the World exploring and learning about the environment, people and places. Expressive Art & Design learning about art, music, dance, imaginative and role-play. Reading When your child is ready we will begin to send books home in their book bags. We usually aim to change their books once a week, but

5 will also receive a red reading log where you can communicate Please also remember that it is very important that you read together with your child at home. This will help your child develop a love of books and stories, which will support them when they start to read themselves. Reception Class Learning Journey work and achievements in their Learning Journey. In the Learning Journey, the children do specific tasks and we write in it regularly about what your child has been doing and their progress. We take photos, make observations and include examples of drawing, writing and painting. We do this to give you a full picture of what your child is doing in school, and to help us to complete the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile. These records are to share with you and you evenings. Outdoor Learning and Forest School In Reception, children use their classroom and the outside area for their learning, even when it is not sunny. Please can you make sure your child arrives to school suitably dressed for all weather. As a school we are members of the Forest School initiative, which you may be familiar with from their Nurseries. During their weekly forest session, the children have the opportunity to play and explore in the wooded area on the school grounds. This may, of course, mean that your child gets muddy! Can you please ensure that your child has a pair of named wellington boots which they can leave in school to wear during these sessions..

6 P.E. Kit and Uniform Your child will need a t-shirt, shorts and a pair of pumps or trainers for PE. They may also need a pair of jogging bottoms or leggings for outdoor P.E. during winter. Please can these be put in a separate bag from their book bag, as this kit needs to stay in school until the end of each half-term when it will be sent home for washing. It is extremely important that each piece of clothing and footwear has your chil items or put them in the wrong bag. So to avoid items being lost, everything! Your child should also be wearing the correct uniform to school. For boys this is a school jumper, a white polo t-shirt or white shirt and grey school trousers with black shoes. Boys may wear a tie if they wish, and grey shorts in the summer. For girls, the uniform is a school jumper or cardigan, a white polo t-shirt or white shirt and grey trousers, a grey skirt or a grey dress. Girls may wear a tie if they wish, and a blue gingham dress in the summer. Please always cardigans are not cheap and every year many get misplaced simply because they have no names on them. Toys Please be aware that it is school policy not to allow children to bring toys into school. This is because many items get lost and children often decide to swap items, which then never get returned. I am afraid that if your child loses something they have brought to school, it may not be found again and of course, teachers cannot be

7 Jewellery Please be aware that the wearing of jewellery to school is strongly discouraged. This includes loom bands. If your child wears stud earrings they need to be removed during P.E. Children should not wear hoops or any dangling earrings to school. Milk and Snack Milk is free for all Reception Class children. The children will have this in the afternoon after their playtime. Fruit is also provided free of charge for morning snack. Sign Language You may notice your child using some examples of British Sign Language (BSL) during their time in Wrens class. We encourage the children to learn some basic BSL during their time with us and have found it incredibly useful to help them remember words to new songs and prayers or to signal discreetly when they need a drink or to go the toilet.
