Voluntary environmental management tool operative since 1995 (definition by European Commission) Aim Continual improvements in the environmental performance of printing industry Means Tools allowing organisations to measure, evaluate, report and improve environmental performance Outcomes Better management of environmental issues and credible information on these issues

5 Identifying key environmental Issues on printing Industry 1. Raw material consumption (Paper, Inks, Varnishes, Alcohol, Buffer, Solvents containing VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), Solvents used in offset printing) 2. Water Consumption (offset printing) 3. Energy Consumption (all printing machines) 4. Wastewater (lubricating oils, waste ink, cleanup solvents, photographic chemicals, acids, alkalis, and plate coatings, etc.) 5. Solid Waste (empty containers, used film packages, outdated materials, damaged plates, developed film, test production, bad printing or spoilage, damaged products, scrap paper, etc) 6. Environmentally Hazardous Waste(Solvents and blanket wash, Rags containing ink, oil or solvent, Inks and ink tins, Fountain solution, Oil and grease, Photographic chemicals ) 7. Air Emissions (VOCs, Greenhouse gases ) 8. Noise

7 Environmental Program The company s environmental program (s)shall be established, implemented and maintained to achieve its objectives & targets. Program (s) shall include: designation of responsibility for achieving objectives & targets at relevant functions & levels of the printing company the means & the time frame by which they are to be achieved

8 Environmental management system The environmental management system documentation should include: the environmental policy, objectives & targets description of the scope of the environmental management system description of the main elements of the environmental management system & reference to related documents records required by EMAS III documents, including records, which the company considers necessary to ensure the effective planning, operation & control of process that relate to its significant aspects

9 Environmental Audit An environmental 3 rd party audit is conducted to assess the management system. The verification body identifies conformity of documentation with EMAS regulation as well as implementation of EMS on organisation.

10 Environmental statement The statement has to include the following information: Extend of employee involvement to the process of continually improving A description of the organization, its structure and its activities, products and services An assessment of all the significant direct and indirect environmental issues. A summary of year by year figures on pollution emissions, waste generation, consumption of raw material, energy and water, and noise. A presentation of the organization s environmental policy, programs and management system. The deadline for the next statement. The name and accreditation number of the environmental verifier and the date of validation
