2 Average Scale Score Change Common Core Interim Assessment Discovery Education interim benchmark tests in reading and mathematics report skill mastery, predictions of subject proficiency, and academic progress on the Discovery vertical scale. Since Discovery's benchmark tests from Kindergarten through high school are all scored on the same vertical scale, interim assessments can be used to set growth targets and monitor student progress during the school year. This document presents analysis on student performance with the Common Core interim assessments for grades K to 8 in reading and mathematics and examines typical increases in scale scores over a full school year for each grade and subject. Each administration of the Common Core interim assessments classifies student performance into four levels: 1, representing the bottom 20% of all students tested; 2, students in the 21st to 50th percentile; 3, students in the 51st to 80th percentile; and 4, or the top 20% of all students tested. The cut scores for these performance levels were established with the total nation-wide sample and provide a basis for comparison of student performance relative to a large population of students. This document looks at cohorts of students as classified by the first test administration at the beginning of the school year to illustrate the different expectations for lower performing students versus higher performing students. There are four test forms within a grade of each Common Core interim assessment between grades K-8: Test A, Test B, Test C and Test D. This document looks at differences in scale scores between Test A and Test D, as well as Test A and Test C. Many schools and districts choose to only administer three forms of the interim assessments during the school year. Tables 1 to 2 present the average scale score difference for reading and math between Test A and Test D. The average scale score differences were calculated separately for cohorts of students based on their performance classification on the first test administration at the beginning of the school year. For each cohort of students, the full year's growth is computed to be the average difference in vertical scale scores at the fourth assessment compared to the scores at the first administration (Test D SS Test A SS). For example, in Table 1, a student in grade 3 who is identified as 1 in reading at the beginning of the school year would be expected to increase his or her vertical scale score, on average, by about 152 points over the course of the school year. In contrast, a grade 3 student who is identified as 4 in reading would be expected to increase by about 83 points on the vertical scale. The tables illustrate that the average scale score difference varies by grade level, by subject, and by the initial classification of the students. Tables 3 and 4 present the average scale score difference for reading and math between Test A and Test C. This average difference includes all students who administered both Test A and Test C, and does not exclude students who administered Test D as well.
