1 Payroll No. DERBY HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: REPORTS TO: JOB HOLDER: DEPARTMENT: DIRECTORATE: Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacist Advanced Pharmacist, Education and Training Pharmacy Integrated Care DATE: August 2015 JOB PURPOSE: To undertake a planned programme of training over a period of twelve months to fulfil the requirements and Performance Standards of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) to become a registered Pharmacist. ORGANISATION CHART Advanced Pharmacist, Education and Training Pre-registration Manager and Lead Tutor Regional Pre-registration Facilitator for for the the East Midlands Pre-registration Deputy Tutors Rotation Supervisors Pre-registration Pharmacists DIMENSIONS Operational Undertakes planned training through a series of rotations against Performance Standards identified by the GPhC Pre-Registration Pharmacist training programme (including Personal Effectiveness, Interpersonal skills, and Medicines and Health) and local Pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures, Trust policies and procedures. Pre-Registration Pharmacist JD+PS of 7
2 Works under the supervision of senior Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians to demonstrate the above standards whilst delivering a service to patients in the Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Accountable to GPhC named Pre- Registration training tutors and the Pre-Registration training manager. Managed day to day by section managers in each rotation. Pre-Registration Pharmacist JD+PS of 7
3 PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES 1.1. Undertake a training programme involving structured rotations through all sections of the pharmacy department, including central pharmacy stores, ward services, dispensary and aseptic dispensing, Medicines Information and decentralised clinical pharmacy teams Undertake a two-week cross sector placement in community pharmacy Take full responsibility for own learning and development, including: Applying existing knowledge and experience to the practice environment Development of learning plans, to identify and meet learning needs Meeting with pre-registration tutors and mentors Being proactive in identifying learning opportunities and making best use of time allocated to different rotations Developing new skills and knowledge fundamental to professional practice Recognising the appropriate behaviours for members of the profession Developing a sufficiently professional attitude to demonstrate these behaviours in practice Attending tutorials and regional pre-registration training courses 1.4. Develop a portfolio of evidence (consisting of a log of experience, testimonials, study and personal reflection) to satisfy the Performance Standards of the GPhC for formal review and appraisal at 13 weeks, 26 weeks and 39 weeks To undertake the Pre-Registration Examination of the GPhC if the Pre- Registration Tutor assesses performance as being satisfactory at the 39 week appraisal Completes all validations and assessments required by the Pharmacy Department to demonstrate competence and the development of independent unsupervised working Undertakes an audit project to fulfil the requirements of the GPhC Performance Standards and submits this for the Trent Regional Pre- Registration training award Undertakes supervised pharmacy practice in the Trust Participates in departmental rostered weekend working Complies with all relevant Health and Safety and Trust policies and procedures and Pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures. 4 PLANNING AND ORGANISATION Responsibility for planning own learning and development within structured training programme. Most work is conducted via regular daily scheduled pharmacy practice sessions and weekly training sessions / study time together with bi-monthly regional training courses. DECISION MAKING The post holder delivers supervised pharmacy services to patients within clear Standard Operating Procedures to ensure the safe, effective and appropriate use of medicines, to safeguard patient care, and in order to fulfil the requirements of the GPhC Performance Standards. INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS INTERNAL Purpose Frequency Pharmacy staff To identify learning opportunitites and undertake practice and deliver a Weekly supervised pharmacy service. Deputy Tutors Regular review of portfolio and Fortnightly performance Pharmacy Pre-Registration Tutor(s) Regular review of portfolio and Quarterly and Manager. performance, appraisals for GPhC. GPhC Performance Standards require ability to handle and communicate sensitive information. Knowledge, training and experience Analytical and judgemental skills Effective computer / IT knowledge and skills. 4 year vocational Masters Degree in Pharmacy. Undertakes wide ranging pharmacy experience through structured rotations and learning. Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development and learning as identified in the preregistration training portfolio. Evidence of evaluation of best practice through portfolio and pharmacy practice. Promotes evidence-based practice. GPhC Performance Standards require ability to make judgements from a choice of options relating to pharmacy and medicines issues. Demonstrates clinical reasoning and problem solving skills, using medicines information and research findings, in the evaluation of medication of individual patients (e.g. for interactions), and for advising patients with regards to dosage. Acts in accordance with NHS Values. Accredited computer qualification. Other relevant qualifications. Relevant experience in aspects of pharmacy practice Communicates best practice outside the organisation (e.g. Regional training courses) Develop skills for independent decision making as a pharmacist. Provides safe, effective and timely services to individual patients (e.g. dispensing, information), supervised by senior pharmacy staff. Applies knowledge and skills to patient care to optimise therapy and minimise risk. Demonstrates awareness of and commitment to clinical governance agenda as demonstrated through GPhC performance Standards. Receives and processes cash payments for prescriptions. Responsibility for security and stock control of pharmaceutical stock in daily practice (e.g. when dispensing controlled drugs). Demonstrable commitment to continuing professional and personal development. Contributes to training of pharmacy technician trainees. Ability to prioritise work e.g. to deal with high priority patients / issues first. Preparation and dispensing of aseptic parenteral products. Work pattern requires concentration to review prescriptions, calculations and policy / training documents. Structured training programme is generally predictable. Able to handle conflict and complaints as defined within GPHC Performance Standards. May need to reassure anxious patient / carer. Occasional exposure to cold temperatures or unpleasant odours from drugs. Contributes to other pharmacy audit, practice-research or pharmacy patient surveys.
