5 National Funding Following the Spending Review and Autumn Statement 2015, the National funding landscape is currently under review (Innovate UK managed schemes) - Some remaining funding programmes - Focus on EU until the national picture is clearer

6 Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) 5 Driving UK productivity through low carbon propulsion Innovation 20 million per project in collaborative R&D funding to support the development of low carbon, low emission automotive propulsion technologies. Focus on technologies that: -Deliver significant reductions in vehicle CO2 or other emissions compared to current best-in-class technologies -Are based around one or more: ICE, Lightweight vehicle & powertrain structures, Electric machines & power Electronics, Energy storage & energy management, Alternative propulsion systems -Must include a vehicle manufacturer or tier 1 supplier and an SME, 50% funding, months. Deadline: 30 th March 2016

7 Energy game changer - forthcoming - Innovative disruptive solutions to long-standing challenges faced by the energy sector. Inspection, characterisation & clean-up of buildings, vessels and components operating in aggressive (eg explosive, radioactive, subsea or high-temperature) environments methods for integrating and analysing diverse sets of data and information from many sources to provide decision-making tools and virtual environment Engaging consumers, changing behaviours towards energy, optimise users energy systems, encourage roll-out of local energy systems (heat & power) in a non-invasive way - Must led by an SME whose main business lies outside of the energy sector (alone or collaboratively) % funding, 6-12 months, total costs between 100K- 250K. Deadline for video submissions 11/5/16, Written bids 7/7/16

8 Eureka Eurostars International innovative projects led by R&D-performing SMEs. With its bottom-up approach, Eurostars supports the development of rapidly marketable innovative products, processes and services. Collaborative - partners from 2+ countries. In the UK, only SME s can receive support. Academics/universities and large companies can participate but must fund their own participation or use funds from other sources. Support: up to 60% of eligible costs Funding: maximum per UK partner Duration: max 3 years, within 2 years of project end the research product should be ready for market launch Deadline: 18 th Feb 2016

9 R&D Tax Credits (retrospective scheme) A company tax relief which can reduce a company s tax bill, or for a loss making SME to claim a payable tax credit. The aim is to encourage greater R&D spending in order to promote investment in innovation. Companies can claim R&D Tax Credits for their revenue expenditure on: Employing staff directly and actively engaged in carrying out R&D Consumable or transformable materials used directly in carrying out R&D Subcontracted R&D costs in certain circumstances. SMEs can claim 65% of their subcontracted costs; large companies can claim against 100% of these costs when subcontracted to certain organisations e.g. universities.

10 Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) The forming of a partnership with an academic institution (e.g. university, research & technology organisation) to access skills and expertise to help the business develop. 3 way partnership between a business, an academic institution and a graduate who works for the company. KTPs can vary in length from 6 months to 3 years A SME would be expected to contribute about a third of the costs involved in the project. The average annual contribution to a project for an SME is around 20,000. Gives access to a graduate/post-doc staff member.

15 SME Instrument from Horizon 2020 Designed specifically for highly innovative SMEs with international ambitions, determined to turn strong, innovative business ideas into winners on the market. 2.8bn ring-fenced for SMEs over 7 years ( ) Business centred, greater support for SMEs and simpler procedures than previous streams. Support from idea conception and planning (Phase 1) to business plan execution and demonstration (Phase 2) and then commercialisation (Phase 3). 70% support. Deadlines: 4 per year (next Phase 1 deadline is 24 th Feb, Phase 2, 14 th April ) Low carbon is a key topic

17 Fast track To Innovation from Horizon 2020 Funding for close to market, business driven projects, that is open to proposals in any area of technology or application. 100m available for 2016 Unlike Eurostars or SME Instrument, FTI is not restricted to SMEs, but does require strong business involvement. Project must be mature: commercialisation must be achievable within 3 years of the FTI project start date. Partners are required: from at least 3 different EU Member/ Associated States. At least 2 industry partners in a consortium of 3 OR at least 3 industry partners in a consortium of 5. Support: 70% of eligible costs. Funding: 1-2m (or exceptionally up to 3m). Deadlines: 3 per year, the next is 15 th March 2016

18 Life Contribute to the implementation, updating and development of EU environmental and climate policy and legislation by co-financing projects with European added value. Budget for is 3.4 billion. Eligibility: public bodies, private commercial organisations and private non-commercial organisations (including NGOs). Traditional projects may be best-practice, demonstration, pilot or information, awareness and dissemination projects. Support: 50% of eligible costs Funding: no maximum average of 1-5m Duration: no limits average of months Deadline: usually September, annually

Clear economic, social & environmental benefits alignment to policy and legislation, cost benefits etc. Clear and thorough technical work programme with a good level of risk and well thought out mitigation strategies. Clear technical and commercial innovation. Strong management experience and relevant skills to deliver the project Match funding. Added Value (national, EU, to the sector). If collaborative (clear benefit in the partnership knowledge transfer).
