3 Europe 2020 Strategy Europe 2020 is the growth-strategy of the EU for the period towards The Europe 2020 Strategy is about delivering growth that is: - Smart: - through more effective investments in education, research and innovation - Sustainable: - thanks to a decisive move towards a low-carbon economy - Inclusive - with a strong emphasis on job creation and poverty reduction To achieve this the EU has established 7 Flagship Initiatives

4 7 Flagships of EU2020 Strategy Europe has identified new engines to boost growth and jobs. These areas are addressed by 7 flagship initiatives: Smart growth - Digital agenda for Europe - Innovation Union - Youth on the move Sustainable growth - Resource efficient Europe - An industrial policy for the globalization era Inclusive growth - An agenda for new skills and jobs - European platform against poverty

10 Public Private Partnerships (PPP) For example: Factories of the Future (FoF) PPP initiative to promote competitiveness and sustainability of the European manufacturing industry; Energy-efficient Buildings (EeB) PPP initiative to promote green technologies and the development of energy efficient systems and materials in new and renovated buildings to radically reduce their energy consumption and CO2 emissions; Green Cars (GC) PPP initiative to improve the sustainability of all European road transport and accelerate the move towards electrification of road and urban transport.

15 Opportunities for BD in Pillar I (Excellent Science) ERC Proof of Concept for establishing the innovation potential of an idea arising from an ERC project. to bring research results to a pre-demonstration stage (for potential commercialisation) EUR 150,000 mln. for: market analysis, outline of a business plan, proof of concept, technical tests and validation, clarification of IPR position and strategy Marie Curie European Industrial Doctorate University and company (preferably SME): joint supervision and training of PhD s. PhD s at least 50% of their time at company funding for: researchers salary, supplementary allowance for research and travel costs (..) Future and Emerging Technologies: Three activity lines: FET Open novel ideas for radically new technologies FET Proactive emerging themes and communities FET Flagships tackling grand interdisciplinary science and technology challenges Research Infrastructures: Opening up of (large scale) research infrastructures also to industry, TNA, etc.

Contribute to the economic performance of the EU. Consortia of minimum 3 partners, industry in the lead Drafting of the research topics by the European Commission in dialogue with the relevant European Technology Platforms (ETPs). Access to risk finance: Leveraging private finance and venture capital for research and innovation Strong SME focus Innovation in SMEs: Integrated approach: around 20% of the total budget for Societal Challenges and LEITs to go to SMEs (about 8.65 billion) A dedicated activity for research-intensive SMEs fostering all forms of innovation

17 Access to Risk Finance Goal: help companies/organisations engaged in R&I to gain easier access to loans, guarantees, counter-guarantees and hybrid, mezzanine and equity finance. Daarnaast directe leningen door de EIB en het EIF van 7,5 tot 300 miljoen, verstrekt aan middelgrote- en grote bedrijven en kennisinstelllingen, PPP s en SPV s. SME & small midcaps research & innovation loans service (2014) Leningen van tot 7,5 miljoen. Het EIF distribueert fondsen aan nationale intermediairs (banken) die uiteindelijk kredieten verstrekken. Equity facility for research & innovation (2014) Ondersteuning van vroege fase investeringsfondsen door het EIF Technology transfer financing facility pilot (2015) Cofinanciering van bestaande technology transfer fondsen gericht op valorisatie Een aantal ondersteunende diensten en studies gericht op technische assistentie en investment readiness initiatieven

26 Horizon 2020 Evaluation Criteria 1. Excellence: (of science & technology) Clarity and pertinence of the objectives; Credibility of the proposed approach; Soundness of the concept, including trans-disciplinary considerations, where relevant; Evidence that proposed work is ambitious, has innovation potential, and is beyond the state of the art (e.g. ground-breaking objectives, novel concepts and approaches) 2. Impact: (on economy & society) The expected impacts listed in the work programme under the relevant topic Enhancing innovation capacity and integration of new knowledge; Strengthening the competitiveness and growth of companies by developing innovations Effectiveness of the proposed measures to exploit and disseminate the project results (including management of IPR), to communicate the project, and to manage research data where relevant. 3. Implementation: (of project) Coherence and effectiveness of the work plan, including appropriateness of the allocation of tasks and resources; - Competences, experience and complementarity of the individual participants, as well as of the consortium as a whole; - Appropriateness of the management structures and procedures, including risk and innovation management.
