2 VHAI SCJOHNSON Tamil Nadu Voluntary Health Association DENGUE PREVENTION AND CONTROL SCHOOL STUDENTS AWARENESS & RESIDENTIAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION AWARENESS PROGRAM CONSOLIDATED REPORT Introduction: In the recent years there has been a significant increase in the incidence of Dengue and in the form of severe manifestations such as Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS). Theincreasing magnitude in the spread of dengue has become a major public health issue in the country. In this scenario, SCJOHNSON in association with Voluntary Health Association of India, New Delhi joined hands to initiate an awareness campaign among School Students and Residential Welfare Associations in New Delhi and three state settings, namely Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Hyderabad. In Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu Voluntary Health Association implemented the Dengue Prevention and Control Campaign in Chennai during October 2013 to December 2013 with the support of VHAI and SCJOHNSON. For this campaign, Chennai Corporation was solicited as a partner and Private Schools and Residential Welfare Association in Chennai were aimed to be sensitized. Following are the list of schools and Resident Welfare Association that were sensitized: 1

At the end of the programme, Pamphlets and hand outs related to dengue were distributed Chennai School (Corporation) Velacherry Morning Assembly (1200) Dr.K.R.John, Dr. Ram & Chennai Corporation Zone 13 Health Team Sensitized students with more information about Dengue on the mode of transmission, ways to prevent themselves from Dengue. With activities such as Power point presentations, short films and drawing competitions on the topic student s roles & responsibilities to prevent dengue students were made to engage more with the campaign so that the messages and information are carried forward and disseminated. At the end of the programme Pamphlets and handouts related to dengue were distributed Chennai School (Corporation) Tharamani 160 Dr.Mithun, SRM Medical College Sensitized students with more information about Dengue on the mode of transmission, ways to prevent themselves from Dengue. With activities such as Power point presentations, short films and drawing competitions on the topic student s roles & responsibilities to prevent dengue students were made to engage more with the campaign so that the messages and information are carried forward and disseminated. At the end of the programme Pamphlets 2

4 and handouts related to dengue were distributed DRBCC School, Perambur 600 Dr.Jeyalakshmi,SRM Medical College Students were equipped with information about Dengue on the mode of transmission, ways to prevent themselves from Dengue. With activities such as Power point presentations, short films and drawing competitions on the topic student s roles & responsibilities to prevent dengue students were made to engage more with the campaign so that the messages and information are carried forward and disseminated. At the end of the programme Pamphlets and hand outs related to dengue were distributed. Resident Welfare Association (RWA) Kilpauck RWA 35 Dr.Dinesh & Dr.Madan Anna Nagar RWA 40 Dr.Mithun, SRM Medical College The session was aimed at creating awareness among RWA members on Dengue. The objective of the project was delivered with emphasis upon the modes of transmission, ways to prevent themselves from the disease and also, the roles and responsibilities of every individual on dengue control and prevention. A talk by resource persons, power point presentation, and aninteractive sessionwith residents generated maximum awareness among the residents. At the end of the programme, pamphlets and handouts related to dengue were distributed to residents and RWA Committee members. The objective of the project was delivered with emphasis upon the modes of transmission, ways to prevent themselves from Dengue and also what are the roles and responsibilities of every individual for dengue prevention. 5 Thiruvalluvar Nagar RWA, Ayanavaram. 60 DR. Kala & Dr.Revathi RWA members and residents were sensitized on Dengue. The objective of the project was delivered with emphasis upon the modes of transmission, ways to prevent themselves from Dengue, methods to keep the neighbourhood and also what are the roles and responsibilities of every individual for dengue prevention. A talk by resource persons, power point presentation, and an interactive session with residents generated maximum awareness among the residents. At the end of the programme, pamphlets and handouts related to dengue were distributed to residents and RWA Committee members Rajaji Nagar MangalDeepam RWA, Villivakkam. 55 Dr.Jeyalakshmi,SRM Medical College Created Awareness among RWA members on Dengue. The objective of the project was delivered with emphasis upon the modes of transmission, ways to prevent themselves from Dengue and also what are the roles and responsibilities of every individual for dengue prevention. A talk by resource persons, power point presentation, and an interactive session with residents generated maximum awareness among the residents. At the end of the programme, pamphlets and handouts related to dengue were distributed to residents and RWA Committee members Ayyavu Colony RWA, Arumbakkam Created Awareness among RWA members on Dengue. The objective of the project was delivered with emphasis upon the modes of transmission, ways to prevent themselves from Dengue and also what are the roles and responsibilities of every individual for dengue prevention. A talk by resource persons, power point presentation, and an interactive session with residents generated maximum awareness among the residents. At the end of the programme, pamphlets and handouts related to dengue were distributed to residents and RWA Committee members. I PREPARATORY PHASE: 4

6 Based on the VHAI SCJOHNSON s guidance and project requirements, the TECHNICAL Team finalised Dr.K.R. JOHN, HOD Community Medicine Department, SRM Medical College, Chennai (He was the president of TNVHA in the year ) Discussed with Chennai Corporation Chief Health Officer and Team to identify the DENGUE PRONE ZONES& SUPPORT to implement the campaign in the Chennai Zone. After discussions, they suggested our campaign activities in Zone 13. Discussed with the Chennai Corporation Education Department officials to finalise the Corporation (Chennai) Schools in Zone 13. Finally 3 schools were identified as well as an approval letter received from Chennai City Corporation Education Officer with the guidance of Chennai Corporation Joint Commissioner for Education. Contacted schools (Corporation and Private).(Total 5) Contacted Residential Welfare Association Office bearers to finalise the dates for DENGUE PREVENTION AND CONTROL campaign (Total 5) II IMPLEMENTING PHASE: SCHOOL STUDENTS SENSITISATION PROGRAM Tamil Nadu Voluntary Health Association DENGUE PREVENTION AND CONTROL Campaign Team organised 5 SCHOOL STUDENTS SENSITISATION PROGRAM among Chennai Corporation Schools and Private Schools during the Second Phase of this campaign. Sacred Heart School ( Church Park Campus, Thousand Lights): 5

7 The program was organised at School campus on at 3.00pm Dr. Dinesh and Dr.Shalini from SRM Medical College presided over the program SCJOHNSON PR Team Members attended the event. VII, VIII and IX Standard students participated. TNVHA VHAI SCJOHNSON Dengue Prevention and Control Program team coordinator Mr. S.A. ArockiaSelvarajdelivered the KEY NOTE address. SRM Team experts gave a talk on Dengue Prevention and Control with a PowerPoint Presentation and Video. They alsoexplained on the role of students to prevent mosquitoes breeding in their residences and school neighbourhood. The following main components were addressed during the presentation: Dengue, Signs and Symptoms, Transmission, Life Cycle of Aedes Mosquito, Prevention and Control aspects Finally,a Painting competition was held on the theme Dengue Prevention and Control aspects 6

Corporation School ( Kamaraj Avenue, Adayar): Based on the guidance given by City Health officer, the TNVHA VHAI SCJOHNSON team organised a Dengue Prevention and Control Program in Chennai Schools located in Zone 13. The program was organised at School campus on at 3.00pm Dr.Roshinifrom SRM Medical College presided over the program VII, VIII and IX Standard students participated. TNVHA VHAI SCJOHNSON Dengue Prevention and Control Program team coordinator Mr. T. Ramesh delivered the KEY NOTE address. During this interactive session,session School Teachers and Students participated enthusiastically. SRM Team experts gave a talk on Dengue Prevention and Control with a PowerPoint Presentation and Video. They alsoexplained on the role of students to prevent mosquitoes breeding in their residences and school neighbourhood. The following main components were addressed during the presentation: 7

9 Dengue, Signs and Symptoms, Transmission, Life Cycle of Aedes Mosquito, Prevention and Control aspects Finally, an Essay competition was organised on the theme of Dengue Prevention and Control aspects 3. Corporation School ( Velacherry ): Based on the City Health officer s instructions, the TNVHA VHAI SCJOHNSON team organised the Dengue Prevention and Control Program in Chennai Schools located in Zone 13. The program was organised at the School campus on Dr. K.R. John Technical Head for Dengue Campaign and Dr. Ram from SRM Medical College presided over the program Mrs. Chandra Ramakrishnan attended this campaign as a VHAI representative Mr.Ganesan and Mr.Gallifulla, Sanitory officers from Chennai Corporation demonstrated the Aedes Mosquitos life cycle through a live demonstration. VII, VIII and IX Standard students participated. 8

10 Program team coordinator Mr. T. Ramesh delivered the introductory talkand in the session, School Teachers and Students effectively participated in the interactive mode. The following main components were addressed during the presentation :Dengue, Signs & Symptoms, Transmission, Life Cycle of Aedes Mosquito, Prevention and Control aspects) Finally,an Essay competition was organised for the Schools Students on Dengue Prevention and Control aspect 4. Corporation School ( Tharamani ): Based on discussions with the City Health officer, the TNVHA VHAI SCJOHNSON team organised the Dengue Prevention and Control Program in Chennai Schools located in Zone 13. The program was organised at School campus on Dr. RamMithunfrom SRM Medical College presided the program Mrs. Chandra Ramakrishnan attended this campaign as a VHAI representative VIII, IX and X Standard students participated. 9

11 TNVHA VHAI SCJOHNSON Dengue Prevention and Control Program team coordinator Mr. T. Ramesh delivered the KEY NOTE address. SRM Team experts conducted an interactive session with the students to prevent the Mosquito breeding in their residents and nearby areas. Aposter competition was organised with select schools students on Dengue Prevention and Control aspects 5. DRBCC School ( Perambur): The program was organised at School campus on Dr.Jeyalakshmi from SRM Medical Collegewas the technical expert for the program VIII, IX and X Standard students participated. This was a massive number and almost 600 Students participated in total. TNVHA Program team coordinator Mr. T. Ramesh delivered the KEY NOTE address and introductory talk on dengue prevention and control. 10

12 Dr Jeyalakshmi spoke to the students about Dengue Prevention and Control with PowerPoint Presentation and Videos as well as the role of students to prevent mosquito breeding in their neighbourhood. The session covered all topics such as Dengue signs and Symptoms, transmission, life cycle of Aedes Mosquito, Prevention and Control aspects. II IMPLEMENTING PHASE: RESIDENTIAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION SENSITATION PROGRAM Tamil Nadu Voluntary Health Association DENGUE PREVENTION AND CONTROL Campaign Team has organised 5 RESIDNENTIAL WLFARE ASSOCIATION SENSITISATION PROGRAM in Chennai City Corporation limit. Based on the VHAI SCJOHNSON requirement the team has organised the sensitisation program with the support of Resident Welfare Associations and Chennai Corporations. 1. Kilpauk Residential Welfare Association: The program was organised at Kothari Academy on Dr. Dinesh and Dr.Mathan from SRM Medical College presided the program Kilpauk Residents welfare Associations membersparticipated. 11

13 VHAI Programme managermrs. Chandra Ramakrishnan delivered the KEY NOTE address through a powerpoint presentation. SRM Team expertsn their technical session covered all issues concerned with dengue, signs & symptoms, transmission, life cycle of Aedes Mosquito, Prevention and Control aspects. Finally the Association Secretary Mr.JeganathaRao agreed to paste the POSTERS in the flats as well as circulate the message through their Residential Welfare Association Monthly Newsletter. 2. Anna Nagar West Officers Colony Residential Welfare Association : The program was organised at Anna Nagar West Officers Colony Residential Welfare Association Office on Dr.Mithun from SRM Medical College was the technical specialist for the program Anna Nagar West Officers Colony Residents Welfare Associations membersparticipated. Awareness on WHEEL: TNVHA team took an initiative to spread the Message on VHAI SCJOHNSON Dengue Prevention and Control Campaign to the General public in a different manner. For this we pasted the posters and stickers on TNVHA Four Wheeler and drove it around neighbouring areas of Anna Nagar. 12

SRM Team experts explained and answered several questions on the role of residents to prevent Mosquito breeding and maintaining cleanliness in nearby areas. Finally the Association Secretary Mr.Rajagopal and Mr. Doss President took the initiative to paste the POSTERS in flats to spread the message further and also distributed handouts to participants. TNVHA team suggested to the VHAI SCJOHNSON team to provide the SCJOHNSON ALL OUT PRODUCT for more visibility to the Campaign. 3. Thiruvalluvar Nagar ( Ayanavaram) Residential Welfare Association : The program was organised at Thiruvalluvar Nagar ( Ayanavaram)Residential Welfare Association Office on Dr. Kala and Dr.Revathi from SRM Medical College presided over the program Thiruvalluvar Nagar (Ayanavaram) Residents welfare Associations Committee membersand residents participated. TNVHA Program team inchargemr. S.A. ArockiaSelvaraj delivered the KEY NOTE address. 13

15 SRM Team experts gave a powerpoint presentation ondengue, Signs & Symptoms, Transmission, Life Cycle of Aedes Mosquito, Prevention and Control aspects. Following this, the Association Secretary agreed to paste the POSTERS in flats to spread the message further on Dengue Prevention and Control. SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN: TNVHA team took a special initiative and organised a Signature Campaign. The participants signed in the SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN BANNER and assured to take part in Prevention and Control of Mosquito breeding in their residential areas. 4. Rajaji Nagar MangalaDeepam( Villivakkam) Residential Welfare Association : As we suggested to the SCJOHNSON team, TNVHA Team collected ALL OUT Samples from the SCJOHNSON PR office, City Centre for circulation to the residents. The program was organised at Rajaji Nagar MangalaDeepam( Villivakkam)Residential Welfare Association Secretary House Terrace on Dr.Jeyalakshmi from SRM Medical College presidedover the program SCJOHNSONS PR Team ( Ms.Suvetha and Mr.Mathusoothanan) attended Rajaji Nagar MangalaDeepam (Villivakkam)Residents Welfare Association members participated. 14

The participants put the signature in SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN BANNER and assured to take the part in Prevention and Control of Mosquito breeding in their residential areas. At the end, the SCJOHNSON team distributed ALL OUT Complement ary samples to the Rajaji Nagar Mangaladeepam residents. 5. Ayavu Colony Residential Welfare Association ( Ayavu Colony, Arumbakkam): Due to some changes from the existing plan, the final program of the Dengue Prevention and Control Campaign has organised at Ayavu Colony. 15

17 The program was organised at AKILA Matriculation School Campus on Dr. Dinesh from SRM Medical College couldn t preside over the program at the last minute as he suddenly felt unwell. Ayavu Colony Resident Welfare Associations members participated. TNVHA VHAI SCJOHNSON Dengue Prevention and Control Program team coordinator Mr. T. Ramesh delivered the KEY NOTE address and Mr. S.A. ArockiaSelvarajspoke on dengue prevention and control aspects. The Association President,Mr.Balram and Advisor of the Association,Prof.ShanmugaVelautham, Loyola College, Chennai agreed to paste the POSTERS in flats to spread the message for Dengue Prevention and Control. They suggested implement ingthis type of activities for the whole Chennai Corporation zones. SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN: TNVHA team took a special initiative and organised the Signature Campaign. The participants signedon thesignature CAMPAIGN BANNER and agreed to take the part in Prevention and Control of Mosquitos breeding in their residential areas. At the end, SCJOHNSON team distributed ALL OUT Complementary samples to the Ayavu Colony Residents 16
