3 Previous/future knowledge: In grades three and four, students learned about the role of African Americans in the developing plantation economy (3-2.5), trade with Barbados (3-2.4) and the triangular trade (4-2.3). Students have also learned about the policy of mercantilism (7-1.4) in grade seven.

9 Vocabulary Word Definition Example Your Definition Mercantilism The economic belief that if a country has more exports than imports, it will be richer. If the United States exports more Ford cars, than we import Ferraris, we should make more money than Italy.

10 Notes: The European countries had a, scarcity of raw goods or not enough natural resources within their boundaries to make a lot of money. Therefore, they needed to expand into other countries, creating colonies to send them raw goods and sell goods to. In the colonies, people took the raw goods around them, like, lumber, cotton and iron to export to the mother country. Once in the mother country, the Europeans use the raw goods to create manufactured goods, like, furniture, tools and. fabrics More colonies and raw goods = More manufactured goods, money, and markets for the mother European country.

12 Mercantilism The British government encouraged the development of new products such as indigo by offering subsidies (or bounties) to planters who grew it. Both rice and indigo were on the enumerated list of products that could be sold only to England. South Carolina planters therefore had a secure market in which to sell their crops. However the British government did not enforce this part of the law on Carolina rice, giving South Carolina the economic advantage of a wider market. The British government was lax in its enforcement of most mercantilist laws (a condition known as salutary neglect) and so the people of British North America were free to develop their economies without much interference from the mother country.

13 Wealth and Slavery in Carolina In 1660 the English began to regulate trade with the colonies more closely. This careful regulation was part of the policy known as mercantilism. Growing rice and indigo made Carolina rich, but rice and indigo plantations had to have slave labor. As a result, large numbers of African slaves were sold to Carolina planters. African slave culture became an important part of life in Carolina.

20 Independent Practice The theory of mercantilism meant that countries need to export more than import. England created colonies to get more raw materials. The American colonies goods to England. England than turned those goods into goods. The colonies then bought and those goods from England. The more goods England, the more profit it made.

21 Key Terms Export Independent Practice: Raw Import Manufactured Scarcity Mercantilism Directions: Mr. Hicks wrote a description of English mercantilism. However, he left out several significant key terms. Use the terms you learned today to complete his description of mercantilism. You can use the terms multiple times.
