History Essential s: 1. How did England impose its economic control over the colonies? 2. Why did many colonists become dissatisfied with England s control over the colonies? Standards of Learning: History SOL: The student will: USI.5 Demonstrate knowledge of factors that shaped the colonial America. d. Identify the economic relationships between the colonies and England. USI.6 Demonstrate knowledge of causes of the American Revolution. a. Identify the issues of dissatisfaction that led to the American Revolution. English SOL: The student will: 5.1 Listen, draw conclusions and share responses in subject related group-learning activity a. Participate in and contribute to discussions across content areas. 5.6 Demonstrate comprehension of non-fiction. b. Identify structural patterns found in non-fiction d. Identify cause and effect relationships Content: The student will: 1. Identify the ways that the British imposed economic control over the colonies. 2. Identify and explain the reasons for the colonist s dissatisfaction with Britain s control over the colonies. Process: The student will: 1. Listen and orally contribute to discussions by drawing conclusions and sharing responses in group learning activities. 2. Identify and illustrate cause and effect relationships with the cause and effect sheet and cards. 3. Identify and sequence events on Domino timeline. 4. Define vocabulary words by playing memory. Be assessed informally by observation during reading and discussion periods and oral responses to questions. 2. Be assessed on ability to match vocabulary words to their definitions. 3. Be assessed on matching Cause and effect cards. 4. Be assessed on a Cause/Effect Sheet and illustrate the relationship. 5. Be formally assessed by a test at the end of the unit. Lesson Procedure: Background Knowledge/Purpose Setting: The teacher will: 1. Have an oral discussion on Colonies- What is a colony? What is a colonist? Where did the colonist come from? 2. Explain that all colonists that lived in the 13 colonies were British citizens no matter what country they were from. 3. The colonists were happy being British citizens. We will be talking about the events that changed their feelings. Before Reading: The teacher will: 1. Introduce vocabulary words- Using flashcards with words on them present vocabulary words, discuss the meaning of each word, then show definition cards. As a group have the students come up to a pocket chart or magnetic white board, match the vocabulary word to their definition. (Give each student a chance, aid with reading if needed.) 2. Play memory with the vocabulary words as a group. 3. Discuss that the colonist start off happy British citizens and that as each event happens they become unhappy. 4. Show the students dominos set up in a row, explain that as every event happens it pushes the colonist towards war. 5. Knock over the dominos. 6. Discuss that we are going to talk about what each domino event 7. Discuss that this relationship is called a cause and effect. Give the meaning of cause and effect and some examples. 8. Tell them as we read they should listen for cause and effect relationships. During Reading: The teacher will: 1. Read Sneaky Taxes section pages 6-7 orally to students and make sure to read captions under pictures. 2. List events that happen in section. 3. Place the events on Domino time line. 4. On the overhead transparency of cause and effect sheet, demonstrate by showing how to write a cause and effect relationship. (Cause: The British citizens in England were heavily taxed. Effect: The colonist had to pay taxes.)

3 5. Have students give cause and effect relationships they heard in the section. If they struggle, you can give them either the cause or the effect and have them give you opposite. You may need to go back and reread sections for assistance. (You may want to color code the cause and effect.) 6. Continue the same steps with The Death Head Tax section pages 8-9. After Reading: The student will: 1. Review events on the Domino Time line. 2. Discuss how these events change the colonist s attitude toward the England. 3. Give students the cause and effect cards and have them match the cards. Aid the students with reading when needed. Closure: The student will: 1. When asked orally, tell the teacher one cause and effect relationship they learned from the book. 2. Write this on a cause and effect sheet and illustrate the relationship. Extension/ Differentiation: The student could: 1. Be given a form of currency (tokens/tickets) for Stamp Act Day. Then each sheet of paper the student is given all day is taxed 1 token/ticket and stamped. The students are encouraged through out the day to express their feeling toward the stamp tax. If they run out of currency, they will have to serve the time off of recess. This will demonstrate how the colonists felt toward the stamp act.

5 Handout#2 Domino Timeline The colonists are happy being British citizens. The French and Indian War- The British and the colonist fought the French and Indians. The British won the land east of the Mississippi River. The Quartering Act- The colonists had to provide places to live and supplies for the British soldiers The Navigation Act- The colonists could only trade with England The Sugar Act- The British government Taxed molasses The Stamp Act of The British government taxed every piece of paper that changed hands in the colonies.

6 Handout #3 Cause and Effect Cards The British citizen paid high taxes So the colonists had to pay taxes also. The British were afraid of other countries attacking the colonies So they placed more troops in the colonies. British troops were expensive to house, cloth, and feed So the British government passed the Quartering Act. The British government needed to raise money to pay for the French and Indian war The British government needed more money So they taxed the colonists. So they passed the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was passed So the colonist had to pay taxes on paper.
