6 The First Bachelors on the Job Market: What do you have? A Baetschelar? I hope it is not infectious? B.A. / M.A. are getting through 45% of the programs now B.A. or M.A. 70% in FHs (Universities of Applied Sciences) 28% percent of first year students in Germany are start in B.A. programs (2006) (14% 2005) Acceptance of Bachelor studies is growing But the actual students mostly dislike the programs 6

7 Bachelor and Master programs offered at German universities HIS 2006, fh04 Problems with Bologna Bachelor: usually three years ( Diplom usually four years) Universities of Applied Sciences squeezed in between FAMI and University degrees What will happen with the high proportion of practical studies at Universities of Applied Sciences? 10 General Trends Classic library schools tend to search for new areas and thus neglect traditional contents despite a need for those Struggle between ancients and moderns at some places won by moderns (due to new specialised faculty from other disciplines) On the other hand re-orientation on professional values acceptance of importance of management and personal skills More and more emphasis placed on webtechnologies. 10
