2 EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT OF IDEAS AND PATENTS The best ideas and inventions are of little use if they are not properly exploited and adequately protected. In today s technology-driven world of business, the importance of optimal innovation management is growing constantly. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly important to be well versed in legal matters: how can profitable ideas be protected most effectively? And how to avoid the risk of violating third-party intellectual property? AIRTIGHT ARGUMENTS During the master s course at the NDU you will learn to answer these questions conclusively. The course in Intellectual Property Rights & Innovations focuses on all relevant legal, business management-related, and technical aspects of copyrights and patents, and applied technology management, conveying all the skills required to make maximum use of a company s development output in an efficient, cost-effective and riskfree manner. FOR EXPERTS WITH VISION Strategic development work at many companies usually emphasises questions of essential importance to the commercial success of innovative ideas and products. For example, How can we reliably protect a new product against imitations?, Does a new product violate any third-party patents? or How can our own product contribute to higher profit through expedient licensing agreements with other companies?. Graduates of the master s course in Intellectual Property Rights & Innovations will acquire a high level of problem-solving skills in situations where such demands from different spheres need to be reconciled. They will have legal expertise regarding intellectual property rights and dealing with patent offices, they will be confident in handling questions of strategic innovation planning, and will also be familiar with the work of technical and design staff in development departments. They will be capable of supporting the complete product development workflow with regard to patent and copyright related topics and will be responsible for protecting and exploiting their company s know-how.

3 INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS & INNOVATIONS THE COURSE The course offers the specialist knowledge required by both managerial staff and developers of new products in the spheres of research and development in order to leverage the innovative potentials of the company. Focal topics include research, elaboration and presentation of specific property rights information, possibilities of exploitation, and development of strategies of averting third-party property rights claims. During the course, you will study the basic principles of information technology and business management, acquiring knowledge in the fields of copyrights and industrial property rights. You will learn useful soft skills such as lobbying and networking, negotiation technique and much more. In the field of innovation management you will acquire skills enabling you to manage technological design projects and develop quality assurance and documentation strategies. PROFESSION AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Graduates can work as self-employed innovation and property rights consultants or as corporate experts responsible for building and managing internal technology exploitation structures. They manage external patent right experts, concentrate technical and legal expertise in house, recognise potentials, and contribute significantly to cutting development time for new products and thus to saving costs. They ensure that developers do not violate any third-party patents, thus causing considerable costs for the company. In this position, our graduates are a key, essential interface between management, the development department, and external bodies (patent agents, authorities, etc.).

4 COURSE OVERVIEW DEGREE Master of Science (MSc) DURATION OF COURSE 4 semesters, part-time COURSE LOAD 90 ECTS points EXTRA-OCCUPATIONAL COURSE The classes take place on a bi-weekly basis (Fri-Sat). The curriculum is organised as an extra-occupational course (part-time), consisting of 20% mandatory attendance and 80% guided and individual study time (projects, assignments, research etc.) COSTS 590, per month or 3.500, per semester FINANCIAL SUPPORT OPTIONS There are a number of options available to help you finance your studies at the New Design University: state and private scholarships and grants, student loans, and loans on easy terms. For further details see ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Applicants for the master s degree course will preferably hold a relevant bachelor s degree in technology, law or business. Applicants for the course may, however, also be admitted to the course with a secondary school leaving certificate or internationally recognised higher education entrance qualification or an apprenticeship with vocational qualification and appropriate equivalent proof of practice. Proof of aptitude will be assessed in the form of an entrance examination, consisting of a written entrance examination and an admission interview with the course director.
