3 INTRODUCTION The manual is a tool to provide Chalmers with a unified and coordinated visual identity. However, we are dependent on your good judgment and common sense, because every practical case cannot be specified beforehand. For advice, please contact Communications and Marketing, chalmersprofil@chalmers.se One of the keynotes behind the graphic profile is to make Chalmers easily visible when content is provided by Chalmers. We want Chalmers to be portrayed as: Big, powerful and modern layout of the logotype Academic and traditional layout of the Avancez-emblem Consistent and professional existing applications in the design manual Chalmers was founded in 1829, through a donation by William Chalmers. Our identity is built on tradition and future. The motto of our founder is still valid Avancez. Chalmers Design manual 1

4 LOGOTYPE This is Chalmers logotype. The logo is unique and cannot be replaced by any other typeface. Chalmers formal English name is Chalmers University of Technology which is added to the English version of the logotype. The Avancez-emblem on the other hand, is a symbol of our heritage. The logotype can be used without the emblem, but the emblem should not be used without the logo. Swedish version English version Originals for download You can download high quality logotypes for professional printing. The downloaded logotype can then be imported/placed/mounted into your document. The images are vectorized and can be scaled without loss of quality. However, be sure not to distort the image. The English version is primarily used in international context, when the material s language is English and when it is otherwise not apparent that Chalmers is a University of Technology. 5 LOGOTYPE AVANCEZ-EMBLEM The Avancez-emblem is a symbol of our heritage (the motto of our founder William Chalmers: Avancez!) and can be used in combination with our logo. The Chalmers logotype can be used without the Avancez-emblem, but the emblem should not be used without the logotype. There are four versions of the emblem; black (for white or light coloured backgrounds), white (for black or dark coloured backgrounds), and the black & white emblem, which is black with a white filling (for mixed backgrounds, e.g. photos). The variant with gold filling should not be used unless by special permission and with special artwork from the Communications and Marketing Office. 6 LOGOTYPE RIGHT-JUSTIFIED LOGOTYPE + AVANCEZ-EMBLEM There are situations where fixed positions are necessary between the logotype and the Avancez-emblem. There are two combinations of logotype + Avancez-emblem: right-justified and centred. The minimum recommended size of the Avancez-emblem is 15 mm. 8 LOGOTYPE COLOUR AND SIZE Chalmers logotype is available in two colours: black or white. The minimum recommended width is 22 mm for print and 85px for web. Changing or adding any elements into the logotype or Avancez-emblem is never permitted. 9 LOGOTYPE FREE SPACE AND MARGINS To ensure legibility, the area around the logotype needs to be free from other elements. The free space around the logotype also includes borders on a paper or any other printed material. Therefore, do not make the logotype too big. How small the logotype should be depends on the content (more information can be found in the paragraph about placement). A rule of thumb is that the logotype should not be distorted. The Avancez-emblem should be recognisable and readable. Below are some examples of typical borderline cases. Exceptions are valid on combination-logotypes with a web address placed below the logotype, e.g. where it should be placed underneath it with the M rule. When the centred combination-logotype is being used as a remitter on the cover of a major printed material, the M rule of margin placement should be applied as well. 10 LOGOTYPE INCORRECT USAGE The logotype is an important element of the graphic profile. It must therefore be used with care. To make sure it retains its value and legibility, correct use is necessary. For that reason there are several clear rules. CHALMERS Chalmers logotype is a fixed image. Do not construct your own versions. Do not place visual elements around the logotype. Do not change the scale of individual letters. Annan Logo Do not change the kerning between letters. Do not use damaged or low-resolution logotypes. Do not compile with other logotypes. Do not build the logotype into other images. Chalmers Design manual 8

11 Do not change the proportion of the logotype, nor the Avancez-emblem. Do not use colours other than those permitted for the logotype or the Avancez-emblem. Do not change direction. Do not place the logotype or Avancez-emblem against backgrounds with similar colours or with complex patterns. Chalmers Design manual

12 LOGOTYPE CHALMERS + UNIVERSITY OF GOTHENBURG Concurrent partners often have common communication and information. The partners should be working in an equal visual way. The free space and size of the logotype should be balanced in order to send out the biggest impression of similarity as possible. The mutual logotype for Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg is a unique image, i.e. the individual letters have fixed positions. The logotypes below are being used for those institutions and entities that are common for Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg. Note that both the Swedish and the English version of the logotype exist in black and in white. There is also a version with the University of Gothenburgs emblem in blue. Chalmers Design manual 10

13 FONT Chalmers uses two fonts, one Serif and one Sans Serif. The Serif font is Times Ten and the Sans Serif is Akzidenz Grotesk. Times Ten is being used in this text, and Akzidenz Grotesk for the headline. With one Serif font and one Sans Serif, you will be set to solve all font related problems that may appear. Times Ten and Akzidenz Grotesk will be used for all printed material that is being distributed, for example marketing material, annual reports, business cards, envelopes etc. But for printed material of a more work-related character those requirements are not necessary. For more practical reasons you are allowed to use Times, Helvetica and Arial as replacement fonts. In letters and PowerPoint templates Arial should primarily be used. 14 FONT AKZIDENZ GROTESK Sans Serif is a typeface without the small features at the end of the strokes on the letters. The typeface is typically used for headlines and signs. Akzidenz Grotesk has its roots in the mid 1800s, which makes it one of the oldest Sans Serif. The primary usage is for printed material, headlines and images. Recommended replacement fonts: Helvetica or Arial. 15 FONT TIMES TEN Serif is a typeface with small features at the end of the strokes on the letters, which makes it suitable in long passages. Times was originally made to be used in newspapers for an economical reason: a lot of text can fit into a small area. There are several variations of Times Times Ten is a wide and open version that is very easy to read. Most of the scientific special characters work with Times Ten. Recommended replacement fonts: Times or Times New Roman. 16 FONT WEB FONTS When reading on a computer Sans Serif often works better than Serif, especially in smaller font sizes. On chalmers.se and at the student portal, Arial and Helvetica are used throughout the page (depending on web browser and operating system). In a digital context we have often been dependent on the font that the visitor has on their computer, which obviously sets limits on the compatibility and readability of the font. More modern solutions for web fonts are expanding amongst visitors on our webpage, which will result in a better and easier way to control fonts in digital context for the future. 17 COLOURS Chalmers is by tradition black, white or blue. Black is our main colour, but a special Chalmers blue and Chalmers grey can also be used. The Chalmers grey is chosen to suit backgrounds, covers and patterns. Colours are defined in various codes for different production techniques. Four-colour process printing is defined by cmyk. Spot-colour printing is defined by pms. Computer and video screens are defined by rgb. Web pages in html-code are defined by hexadecimal numbers. Paints, fabrics etc. are defined by ncs. The use of gold and silver is only allowed for special printed materials; doctoral thesis, brochures, catalogues and material for academic ceremonies. Note that gold and silver exclusively are being exemplified below. 18 COLOURS COMPLEMENTARY COLOURS Complementary colours visually support smaller divisions and categorisations within Chalmers as complements to Chalmers main colours. Two examples (below) are the complementary colours for Student-Recruitment and the Education-areas. 19 VISUAL IMAGE Chalmers visual image consists of a few key components: the logotype, the Avancez-emblem, fonts and colours. Examples on the following pages are not possible in all programs and require some extra knowledge and of course a good eye for layout. Please contact chalmersprofil@chalmers.se for help and advice. 20 VISUAL IMAGE PLACING OF LOGOTYPE/AVANCEZ-EMBLEM We always strive to place our logotype so that Chalmers is the legible remitter: on top, left-justified or centred, alternatively at the bottom or right-justified. In digital productions (e.g. video) the logotype should be placed to the right in the top corner instead. In terms of size, the logotype should be minimalistic and never cover an entire area. 21 VISUAL IMAGE HEADLINES Main headlines should always be written in Akzidenz Grotesk, with capital letters in bold. We often reduce the tracking of the letters to 90% width and kern (force) characters together with the value 50 up to 70 units, depending on the size. The letters should be close together and sometimes adjustments may be necessary for certain letters, for example i. If the headline happens to be on two rows the spacing can be made closer than normal. 22 MERS VISUAL IMAGE WORD-IMAGES/COLOURED WORD-IMAGES If we have a comprehensive headline/message we try to create an image of the words with kerning, splitting up the headline on several rows, closer tracking and spacing adjustments. In some cases it can also be suitable to put the text in a smaller size and in regular, without any adjustments. You should always aim for a balance in the word-image, without making it Chalmers Design manual INABLE TURE symmetrical. The message in the word-image should stand out, either in the wording or with the layout. Sometimes we fill letters in a word-image/headline with another picture so it gets colourful (instead of just adding a solid colour to the letter). 23 VISUAL IMAGE ASYMMETRICAL LAYOUT When possible, we aim for an asymmetrical layout with room for free space or an image. It gives an interesting look and often feels more attractive to read. To avoid a scattered impression, some balance must be achieved. Body text should only exceptionally be placed to the right (justified), which demands extra care with tracking, spacing between words and characters and syllabication to ensure readability is not affected. 25 VISUAL IMAGE WEB HOME PAGE The purpose of our webpage is to increase availability for the visitor. The web offers a large amount of functionalities that open up to interaction, which makes it easy and efficient to obtain information. The web is also optimised to achieve higher search engine rankings, seo. 26 VISUAL IMAGE PHOTOS We constantly work to make all of Chalmers activities contribute to actualise our vision for a sustainable future. A good way to convey that message and impression is by using photos. Used correctly, photos can communicate who we are and what we do, as well as build our trustworthiness. Therefore our photos should: Summarize and convey the uniqueness with Chalmers Show our culture and strengthen our position Reflect Chalmers as a lively and dynamic University Lift Chalmers and Gothenburg as an attractive place to visit, live and study Movement, space, clean surfaces Engaged harmony Proximity, concentration and specialized skills Chalmers Design manual 24

28 VISUAL IMAGE INCORRECT USAGE OF PHOTOS The photos we decide to use in different media channels are important carriers of our brand and need to send a clear and attractive impression. It is also important that the laws of copyright are being followed, as well as individual restrictions on the publication of pictures of individuals. Further information of a more unified imagery and image licenses can be found in Guidelines for image use on Do not use pictures that are blurry, disproportioned or where the photo is cropped so that the main motive is outside of the image frame. Do not use photos of people from image banks, or pictures of extras, actors or models. Do not use illustrations that are self-evident, genre-/symbolic pictures that feel constructed or photos taken from image banks if they could have been taken in a Chalmers environment with people that are connected to Chalmers instead. Do not use photos of bad quality, photos that are blurry, photos that are staged and look affected or photos that are boring and uninteresting. 29 TEMPLATES A large amount of printed material is produced by Chalmers every year. All of these must follow the corporate identity guidelines that apply to the logotype, the Avancez-emblem, the fonts and the colours. 30 TEMPLATES BUSINESS CARDS AND SIGNATURES Business cards are the most personal printed material and are an important symbol of the University for the outside world. There are those who wish to change the look of their business cards, but as an employee or representative of Chalmers it is important that you use the valid template. The layout of the business cards for joint institutions at Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg is the same. The combined logotype is the only thing that sets them apart. If you are working at a joint institution and have mutual cards, you should use the established combination of the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers logotype. Other business cards For collaborations that consider they need to be using other types of business cards, exceptions of templates can in rare instances be made. Contact chalmersprofil@chalmers.se to get an agreement of how the logotype of Chalmers and the Avancez-emblem should be used. The information you have on your business card should be shown in the signature. Neither the logotype of Chalmers, nor the Avancez-emblem should be used in the signature. 31 TEMPLATES LETTER FORMS AND ENVELOPES The letterhead is exclusively intended for Chalmers logotype. In the footer of the letter form the name of the institution/unit has to be clearly visible and presented in capital letters. To highlight the department of the institution/unit we have decided to use the short title of the institution name. In letters, the font Arial should primarily be used. Printed letter forms If the institution decides to print letter forms it should be printed on archive or age-resistant paper. The colour code for the printed institution name is Pantone no Envelopes 1. Chalmers logotype, width 40 mm. Black colour. 10 mm from the top border, 15 mm from the left margin. 2. Avancez-emblem, width 30 mm. Black colour. 12 mm from the lower border, horizontally centred. 3. Row 1: Akzidens-Grotesk medium. Capital letters 7/9, tracking 50. Black colour. 32 TEMPLATES POSTERS Posters exist in a large amount of proportions and formats, so this template is only a guide. As far as possible, try to use Chalmers colours and font when creating your posters. The standard format for posters are 700x1000 mm, the sketch format AO (840x1188 mm) or A1 (594x840 mm), but conference organisers usually indicate other formats as well. 33 TEMPLATES ADVERTISING When Chalmers is advertising, it is very important that the message and layout of the ad is in line with the image and visual identity of Chalmers. The selection of media must be target-driven and consciously made. Classified Advertising Classified advertising is an important opportunity for Chalmers in the media. Classified advertising is important from a brand perspective. To visualise Chalmers in a tasteful way, the layout of classified advertising is continuously being renewed and updated according to Chalmers visual identity. 35 TEMPLATES ROLLUPS The remitter should be placed at the top of the rollup to ensure legibility. In the example you can see recommended areas for the three main parts of how a rollup is usually composed. When the remitter and message is the same, the logotype can be placed where the two areas overlap. Illustrations can also bleed. Carefully choose the logotype, background colour and illustration so it clearly aligns with the message and remitter. 36 TEMPLATES THESIS AND REPORT TEMPLATES A common cover with the logotype and Avancez-emblem exists for all thesis and reports at Chalmers. These covers cannot be used for other publications. Corresponding covers also exists for units that are common with the University of Gothenburg. In those cases where a doctoral student is defending a thesis within an agreement of a double doctoral degree between Chalmers and a foreign partner university, the logotype and image of the foreign university should be placed on the cover of the report below the logotype of Chalmers, as well as on the back of the report. On the title page the logotype of the other university should be placed to the right of Chalmers logotype, centred on the page.
