1 Center for Student Involvement The Olympian tribune APRIL-MAY 2012 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 11 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated In November of 2011, Constance Ashby, Savannah Bigham, Lauren Carter, Mary Dorr, Wanda Horton, Shelby Lockhart, Shelbie Pittman, and Brittany Toney were initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Zeta Zeta chapter. Since then, they have been diligently at work fulfilling the duties of a college student and a member of the sorority. February 12th-18th was their combined service and activity week for the semester. This included yoga, and a Bible study to better the individual on Monday and Tues- Continued... day. Then, an Insanity workout for Kidney Awareness, a Date Auction for the American Heart Association, a bake sale for the Heifer International program, and a game night for fun through the rest of the week. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Zeta Zeta chapter raised over 200 dollars and donated them to the respective organizations. In April, they hosted an activity weekend consisting of a skate night, where the first 08 received free admittance, a game night, and an Easter service at Harrison Street Missionary Baptist Church in Paducah, KY. The regional conference was held April 25th-30th in Madison, Wisconsin. Overall, they are extremely proud of the first semester as active members on campus and look forward to the fall semester. We hope everyone had a wonderful semester and can t wait to see you August 20th. Our activity week will be September 4th - 8th, so get back, get settled, and be sure to keep an eye out for pink and green so you don t miss out!

Duties need not obscure it. Because the dream is within you, no one can take it away. -Unknown The ladies of Alpha Gamma Delta had a crazy, busy month of April! We initiated 6 beautiful ladies while another 23 of our sisters went alum. We came and supported the Miss MSU pageant and cheered on our lovely sisters that were able to be a part of it. All Campus Sing was a lot of fun and a great turn out. All of the sororities and fraternities that participated definitely rocked the steps! We are so proud that we were able to take home the 1 st place trophy in the sorority division! We also had our second annual philanthropy golf scramble to raise money for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. Congrats to the winners and thanks for everyone that participated, without you we wouldn t have been able to raise over $1000 that will go to so many great causes through our foundation! We are really looking forward to Relay for Life this May and can t wait!

Duties need not obscure it. Because the dream is within you, no one can take it away. -Unknown This month has been a big month for the Alpha Chi chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma. This past month, Alpha Chi hosted the annual Jan Jones Wilson Memorial 5K Walk/Run on campus. The following day, the women of Tri- Sigma welcomed alumnae, family, and friends to celebrate Founders Day. At the Founders Day celebration, representatives from National Headquarters presented the women of Alpha Chi with the title of Collegiate Chapter of the Year for the second year in a row. Alpha Chi also received the Jane E. Kinderman Standards of Efficiency award as well as the Creative Educational Award. Locally, Tri-Sigma is proud to have been honored with multiple awards at All Greek Assembly including Outstanding Educational Program, Outstanding Community Service, and Outstanding Collaborative Community Service awards. We are extremely proud of our former president Lynsey Freeman for receiving the award for Student Organization President of the Year as well as being named a Top 10 Student Leader on Murray State s campus. Alpha Chi is excited to send Alyssa Schloss to Dunham Women of Character Institute, a leadership conference hosted by our National Headquarters in June. We are hard at work preparing for formal recruitment in August, and look forward to welcoming a new pledge class into our sisterhood.

Because the dream is within you, no one can take it away. -Unknown The ladies of Alpha Sigma Alpha are thrilled to have one of their own sisters, Rachel Dismukes, crowned as Ms. MSU. Rachel is an active member of Alpha Sigma Alpha along with being involved on campus as the VP of the Student Alumni Board and Student Ambassador Coordinator. This year, she was also given the award of Volunteer of the Year at Murray State. Off campus, Rachel is involved in Special Olympics. This was Rachel s second year participating in the pageant and she says she was blessed to be nominated and have the opportunity to represent her sisters and her school. She says by being a part of the pageant, she was able to meet other wonderful women on campus and was able to learn more about herself as a leader. For those participating in Ms. MSU in the future, Rachel says that the best advice she could give is to be confident, show your personality and most importantly, be yourself.

6 Page 6 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 11 The Olympian Tribune Greek Members of the Month The ladies of Tri Sigma are proud to nominate sophomore Molly Green as the Greek Member of the Month. As programming chairman, Molly strives to strengthen our organization through various sisterhood events and retreats. This past month, Molly organized a sisterhood event at Lakeshore United Methodist Assembly in which 50 sisters participated in a high ropes challenge course. The course was designed to push people to their limits, overcome fears, and required team work and collaboration to complete the course. Molly believes that true growth in our organization comes from overcoming obstacles with help and support from sisters. Recruitment Director Lindsay Whitaker says, Molly is like a ray of sunshine to her sisters. She lights up a room with her energy and can put a smile on anyone s face. She is devoted to improving Tri Sigma s sisterhood and making us all the best we can be. Molly is a sophomore Exercise Science/ Wellness major from Paducah, KY. We are proud to call Molly a sister and look forward to her work as programming chairman in the upcoming semesters. The ladies of Alpha Gamma Delta nominate Brittany Mitan, a sophomore Mathematics and Secondary Education major. She serves as the current song coordinator in Alpha Gamma Delta and was the coach of All Campus Sing this year. In addition to being active in her sorority, Brittany is a peer tutor and is a mentor in the G.R.O.W. program. With the G.R.O.W. program she is paired with a middle school girl to mentor and help her gain leadership skills, self confidence, and the ability to speak her mind. After college, she plans to be a high school math teacher and coach in a metropolitan area and have a positive impact on her student s lives.

Meet leaders from Murray State University and the community. Develop your leadership skills and enjoy the various leadership styles and personality at the same time! Be a part of an elite experience at Murray State University. Every workshop is free to attend. Plant the seeds for a successful future. Workshops will be held on every other Tuesday of each month at 5:00pm in the Curris Center.
