1 NAVIGATING THE LAW PROJECT FROM A STUDENT S PERSPECTIVE Once a student logs on, s/he will be led to an Assignments page that displays a default list of assignments (challenges) appropriate to all modules. (Instead of using the default assignments in The Law Project, teachers also have the option of going into the Teaching Centre and selecting a lesson plan with more specific assignments that can be projected in the classroom or printed and distributed.) The student considers the challenges and, ideally, continues on to view an animated movie in the Screening Room that raises issues and various points of view on a topic. 1

2 In the Screening Room, the student can collect clips from the animated movie or point of view interviews by clicking the Collect button when the desired clip is on the screen. From here, the student might explore the other applications within the module to support their thesis or assignment. Each module contains its own Timeline, Doc Reader, Media Explorer, Try Judging, and Quiz applications with content specific to that module. Where students see images or videos relevant to their chosen assignment, they have the option of collecting this media simply by clicking on the Collect button in the Timeline or directly on the image in Media Explorer..Students can review and organize all the media they have personally collected in the My Collection application. 2

3 In My Collection, students review their media simply by selecting a frame from the strip of images showing at the bottom of the screen. They see a description of the selected media and enter a brief note to remind them of a fact or idea associated with that media clip. In My Collection the student can select images for later use in Vid21, the online movie editor. Many students will have collected too many images to manage. In My Collection, they can choose to delete some images simply by clicking on the trash can icon. They can also select images to Add to Vid21. All media that they choose to add to Vid21 will show up in the Vid21 bins organized according to media type. Video will be in the Video Bin. Images will be in the Photos Bin. Sound effects and music are pre-loaded in the appropriate bins. Once students have collected media and added it to their Vid21 bin, they can create a short film in the Vid21 Movie Maker. 3

4 If students find that they do not have enough media for their movie, they can return to any one of the themed modules to collect more media. They are not restricted to the assigned module. For example, students may wish to seek and collect images from the Environment module to include in a movie about Aboriginal Fishing Rights. 4

5 Once new material is collected, students will need to return to My Collection to add it to Vid21. At any time, the student can return to the Assignments page to review their choice of challenges by clicking the Notebook icon at the lower right of the panorama screen. 5

6 As noted in the document Movie Tips for Teachers, you may encourage budding filmmakers to think metaphorically with their images, to experiment with sounds and music, and to try writing to the images not the other way around. Less narration is more when manipulating images. A visual pause or a sound effect for impact is often more effective than a wall of words. When students complete their movie, they must save it by clicking on the floppy disk icon and can share the link to their movie by clicking on button. If a student requires help with any of the functions in navigating The Law Project, organizing media in My Collection, or making a movie with Vid21, they will find easy-to-follow instructions when they click on the Help buttons. Teachers will also find printable PDF documents in the Teacher s Centre for all the Help instructions and may wish to print and distribute the Multimedia Rubric PDF to use as a means of self or peer assessment for completed movies. MAKING MORE THAN ONE MOVIE If a student is enrolled in more than one course or wants to make more than one movie, they will need to JOIN again on the Log In page using a different User ID. They can use the same address, but will have two accounts. Only the User ID needs to be different. The student s name, , and password remain the same. NOTE: If your computer lab does not have a headphone for every student, ask your students to bring their own headphones or earbuds to class. Also, ensure the sound is enabled on computers in the lab. 6
