F Issued March 2016 Application IMPORTANT: The TEC20 Wireless Coordinator is intended to provide an input to equipment under normal operating conditions. Where failure or malfunction of the wireless coordinator could lead to personal injury or property damage to the controlled equipment or other property, additional precautions must be designed into the control system. Incorporate and maintain other devices, such as supervisory or alarm systems or safety or limit controls, intended to warn of or protect against failure or malfunction of the wireless coordinator. Refer to the QuickLIT website for the most up-to-date version of this document. The TEC Series Wireless Thermostat Controller System provides wireless networked control of HVAC equipment on a Building Automation System (BAS) that enables remote monitoring and programming. This TEC Series System integrates into a supervisory controller using BACnet Internet Protocol (IP) or BACnet Master-Slave/Token-Passing (MS/TP) communications. TEC20 Coordinators allow the supervisory controller to communicate with multiple TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers. The TEC20 Coordinator initiates the formation of the wireless mesh network; one is required per wireless mesh network. Each TEC20 Coordinator and the TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers assigned to it share a Personal Area Network Identification (PAN ID). A TEC20 Coordinator requires a 15 VDC power source (available separately). An optional remote-mount antenna and cable is available to allow transmission when the TEC20 Coordinator is mounted inside a metal panel. TEC20 Wireless Coordinator Installation Instructions 1

4 Mounting Follow these guidelines when mounting a TEC20 Coordinator: Ensure that the mounting surface can support the TEC20 Coordinator and any user-supplied enclosure. Mount the TEC20 Coordinator in a horizontal orientation. Mount the TEC20 Coordinator on an even surface whenever possible. Use shims or washers to mount the unit securely on the mounting surface. Mount the TEC20 Coordinator in areas free of corrosive vapors and observe the environmental limitations listed in the Technical Specifications section. Do not mount the TEC20 Coordinator on surfaces that are prone to vibration, such as duct work, or in areas where electromagnetic emissions from other devices or wiring can interfere with TEC20 Coordinator communication. Allow sufficient space for cable and wire connections (minimum of 50 mm [2 in.] in each direction). On panel or enclosure mount applications, observe the following guidelines: Do not install the TEC20 Coordinator in an airtight enclosure. Mount the TEC20 Coordinator so that the enclosure wall or the transformer does not obstruct ventilation of or radiate heat into the TEC20 Coordinator housing. Location Considerations Follow these guidelines when locating a TEC20 Coordinator within a TEC Series Wireless Thermostat Controller System. Locate the TEC20 Coordinator so that it is easily accessible. For best signal transmission, vertically orient the TEC20 Coordinator s antenna with at least 50 mm (2 in.) exposed below (and clear of) any pipes, duct work, or other metal obstructions. Due to the nature of the Radio Frequency (RF) waves, a wireless device may have significantly different signal strengths if its position changes relative to another wireless device or if its environment changes. If a TEC20 Coordinator shows poor signal strength, you may be able to improve the signal strength by moving the device s antenna a couple of inches in either horizontal direction. Locate the TEC20 Coordinator s antenna in line-of-sight with as many TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers as possible. Do not mount the TEC20 Coordinator s antenna in recessed areas, metal enclosures, or shelving units. Follow these additional guidelines when installing a TEC20 Coordinator: Locate the TEC20 Coordinator near the center of the associated array of TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers. At a minimum, position a TEC20 Coordinator within 10 m (32.8 ft) of at least two TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers. At a minimum, position all TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers within 10 m (32.8 ft) of at least two other TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers or one TEC Wireless Thermostat Controller and the TEC20 Coordinator. Locate the TEC20 Coordinator on the same floor as, or one floor above or below the associated TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers. For more information on transmission between floors, refer to the Wireless Metasys System Location Guide (LIT ), which is available on the Johnson Controls Portal intranet site. Avoid metal obstructions and concrete or brick walls between the TEC20 Coordinator and the associated TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers. For detailed information on location guidelines for a TEC Series Wireless Thermostat Controller System, and for estimating the number of TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers needed as repeaters for extending wireless transmission range, refer to the Wireless Metasys System Location Guide (LIT ), which is available on the Johnson Controls Portal intranet site. 4 TEC20 Wireless Coordinator Installation Instructions

5 Wireless Signal Transmission Considerations Line-of-sight transmission ranges between a TEC20 Coordinator and a TEC Wireless Thermostat Controller (or between TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers) can be less than the maximum distances shown in Table 1. The effective transmission range for indoor applications varies because of RF signal absorption and reflection due to metal obstructions, walls (or floors), and furniture found in typical building interiors. Table 1: Recommended Transmission Ranges Type Distance Through Walls 10 m (30 ft) Open Space 30 m (100 ft) FIG:TEC20_DIN_mnt For detailed information on locating TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers and TEC20 Coordinators for optimum signal strength, refer to the Wireless Metasys System Location Guide (LIT ), which is available on the Johnson Controls Portal intranet site. Wall Mount Applications To mount the TEC20 Coordinator on a wall (or other vertical surface): 1. Hold the TEC20 Coordinator up to the wall, oriented horizontally, as a template and mark the mounting tab hole locations. 2. Drill holes in the wall at the locations marked in Step 1 and insert appropriate wall anchors in all three holes (if necessary). 3. Hold the TEC20 Coordinator in place and insert the screws through the mounting tabs and into the holes. Carefully tighten all of the screws. Figure 3: DIN Rail Mounting and Removal 4. Mount the accessory power module onto the DIN rail in the same manner as Step 3 (Figure 4). 5. Slide the accessory along the DIN rail to connect its 20-position plug into the TEC20 Coordinator. 6. To prevent the TEC20 Coordinator from sliding on the DIN rail, secure with clips provided by the DIN rail vendor, or place a screw in one of the four mounting tabs in the base of the TEC20 Coordinator. IMPORTANT: Do not overtighten the mounting screws. Overtightening the screws may damage the mounting tabs. DIN Rail Mount Applications To mount the TEC20 Coordinator on a DIN rail: DIN rail End Clip NPB-PWR 1. Securely mount an 20.3 cm (8 in.) or longer section of DIN rail horizontally and centered in the required space. If you are mounting both the coordinator and a power module (such as NPB-PWR), the DIN rail section length must be at least 28.0 cm (11 in.). 2. Position the TEC20 Coordinator on the rail, tilting to hook DIN rail tabs over one edge of the DIN rail. 3. Pull out the DIN rail clip and push down and in to force the DIN rail clip to snap over the other edge of the DIN rail. NPB-PWR DIN Rail End Clip Install DIN rail End Clip (Stop Clip) at both ends of final assembly. Figure 4: Using End Clips to Secure Modules FIG:DinClp TEC20 Wireless Coordinator Installation Instructions 5

6 To remove the TEC20 Coordinator from the DIN rail, snap the bottom DIN clips to the extended position and carefully lift the TEC20 Coordinator off the DIN rail. Mounting the Remote Antenna IMPORTANT: Use the antenna provided. Do not alter the antenna in any way or use another antenna. Do not modify the antenna cable in any way. IMPORTANT: Minimum bend radius for the antenna cable is 25 mm (1 in.). Any bend with a smaller radius may damage the cable. Use Figure 5 and the following steps to mount the remote-mount antenna: 1. Ensure that the selected location has line-of-sight to one or more TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers. 2. Gently screw the female connection of the remote antenna onto the TEC20 Coordinator s antenna connector. 3. Mount the remote antenna on a metal surface, using the weighted magnetic base. Removing and Replacing the Cover You must remove the TEC20 Coordinator cover to connect the battery or to replace the battery. The cover snaps onto the base with four plastic tabs (two on each end). To remove the cover, press in the four tabs on both ends of the unit, and lift the cover off. To replace the cover, orient it so the cutout area for communication ports is correct, and then push inward to snap in place. While the cover is removed, ensure that the Operation Mode jumper is positioned as indicated in Figure 5. 9 Use the following procedure to apply power to the TEC20 Coordinator. 1. Remove the cover from the TEC20 Coordinator. 2. Locate the red and black wires coming from the backup battery with 2-position connector plug. 3. Plug the connector into the battery connector on the bottom board (below option slot 2 area). The connector is keyed so that you cannot insert it incorrectly. The red (positive) connection should be the farthest from the two 30-pin option modules connectors. 4. Apply power to the TEC20 Coordinator by plugging in the power plug into the coaxial connector for power port (Figure 6). Battery The TEC20 Coordinator has a custom 10-cell NiMH battery pack mounted under the cover. This battery allows the TEC20 Coordinator to continue operation through very short power interruptions (a few seconds in duration) or to back up data and automatically shut down after power outages of longer than 1 minute. The battery is trickle-charged by the TEC20 Coordinator during normal operation. Following an extended power outage, the battery is charged at a faster rate. Leaving the battery unconnected or in an unpowered TEC20 Coordinator causes the battery to fully discharge in a few weeks. Note: The NiMH battery is fully discharged when factory shipped and requires up to 18 hours of powered operation before it can provide reliable backup power. Replace the battery approximately every 3 years if the TEC20 Coordinator is in a temperature-controlled environment or every year if the TEC20 Coordinator is in a high temperature (greater than 50 C or 122 F) environment. Troubleshooting When power is applied, the STATUS LED (Figure 5) lights. After the TEC20 Coordinator boots, the yellow BEAT LED begins blinking, with a typical rate of about 1 Hz. The blink pattern of the BEAT LED differs for each installation and varies with system load/activity. Use the Diagnostic LEDS (Figure 1 and Figure 5) along with the information in Table 2 to troubleshoot the TEC20 Coordinator. To evaluate wireless communication, check the Wireless Communication Status LED (Figure 6 and Table 3) on the TEC20 Coordinator and TEC Wireless Thermostat Controllers. For further troubleshooting information, refer to the Troubleshooting section in the TEC Series Wireless Thermostat Controller System Technical Bulletin (LIT ). Note: After applying power, if the BEAT LED comes ON steady and stays lit longer than 2 minutes, contact the Field Support Center for assistance.
