2 Control Input M100Q Series actuators receive their input commands from a remote A91/T91 temperature sensor. (Figures 1 and 2 illustrate sensor resistance characteristics.) The A91/T91 is connected to Terminals S1 and S2, for accurate positioning of the output shaft. Note: Use 40 to 90 F (4 to 32 C) A91 sensors for the 15 to 50 F (-9 to 10 C) R81QAA-2 Electronics Board. Sensor Resistance (ohms) F C Temperature Figure 1: Thermistor Sensor Characteristics for Ranges 15 to 50 and 40 to 90 F (-9 to 10 and 4 to 32 C) Sensor Resistance 1400 (ohms) F C Temperature Refer to the M100Q Series Proportional Actuator with R81Q Controller Board for Thermistor Sensor Applications Application Note (LIT ) for minimum position input and remote setpoint potentiometer applications. The voltage between Terminals T1 and X, jumpered from the Direct Acting (DA) Terminal XD or the Reverse Acting (RA) Terminal XR, is approximately 6 VDC at zero rotation of the output shaft. Full rotation of the output shaft occurs when the voltage between T1 and X is approximately 10 VDC. Direction of Rotation The actuators are factory set at the zero position and for 90 Clockwise (CW) travel. The zero position is 10 CW from vertical. (See Figure 3.) Spring return models always return CCW to the zero position when power is removed. Note: Direction of rotation is CW with temperature increase. Keyway Direction of Drive Rotation Terminals 8 and T1 Shorted LOAD END 10 Zero Position Direction of Drive Rotation Terminals 8 and 10 Shorted Drive Shaft Figure 3: Direction of Rotation All reference to the direction of rotation is when viewing the load end stamped on the actuator housing as shown in Figure 3. From this view, the Counterclockwise (CCW) limit is the zero position. 3 M ounting Actuator Follow installation steps for the linkage kit used to couple the actuator and the controlled device. When not utilizing a damper or valve linkage kit, use four 1/4 x 1 in. bolts to mount the actuator (not included). Upright mounting of the actuator is preferred with the output shaft parallel to the floor. Locate the actuator where the shaft and wiring terminals are accessible. Terminal Board Screws (2) Terminal Board Receptacles Insulating Barrier Pin Terminals IMPORTANT: For installations using the CVR83A-600R Weather Cover Kit, mount the actuator in an upright position to prevent water from entering the enclosure and damaging the actuator. All linkage connections should be made to the drive shaft on the load end of the actuator, rated for up to 200 lb dead weight. Limit the load on the auxiliary end to 10 lb dead weight. When mounting on a valve, mount the actuator above the horizontal plane of the valve piping to avoid damage to the actuator if the valve leaks or develops condensation. Note: Valve medium temperatures above 250 F (121 C) are acceptable only if the actuator s maximum ambient temperature is below 105 F (41 C). Figure 4: Installing the Insulating Barrier and the Terminal Board 2. Install the terminal board by carefully placing the terminal receptacles onto the pin terminals. 3. Fasten the board with the No x Phillips screws supplied. 4. Install the vertical board, carefully placing the terminal receptacles onto the two sets of pin terminals so all pins are aligned. (See Figure 5.) Vertical Board Pin Terminals Terminal Receptacles Receptacles Pin Terminals R81Q Installation! CAUTION: Equipment Damage Hazard. Disconnect all power supplies before removing the wiring connections and boards to avoid possible damage to the equipment. Figure 5: Installing the Vertical Board 5. Place the bracket, supplied with the actuator, over the vertical board and fasten it with the captive screw. (See Figure 6.) Installing Boards M100X base actuators are not provided with circuit boards. To install one, loosen the actuator s cover screws, remove the cover, and proceed as follows: 1. Install the insulating barrier into the wiring compartment. Make sure all the metal surfaces are covered. (See Figure 4.) Captive Screw Bracket Figure 6: Installing the Bracket M100Q Series Proportional Actuator with R81Q Controller Board Installation Bulletin 3
4 6. Apply the adhesive-backed identification label provided to the actuator bracket. (See Figure 7.) Bracket M150 X GA-1 Make all wiring connections using only copper conductors and in accordance with the National Electrical Code and local regulations. Use separate transformers on each M100 actuator to avoid potential miswiring or control signal problems. Locate all splicing and excess wiring outside the actuator wiring compartment. If desired, add a standard electrical box to the actuator s wiring compartment. (See Figure 8.) Q Identification Label Figure 7: Identification Label Wiring Compartment Removing Boards To remove a circuit board, loosen the cover screws and remove the actuator cover. (See Figure 3.) 1. Disconnect all wiring to the terminal board. 2. Loosen the captive screw, and remove the bracket. 3. Pull the vertical board straight upward, being careful not to bend or damage the pin terminals. 4. Remove the two screws from the terminal board. 5. Grasp the receptacles and remove the terminal board by lifting upward, being careful not to bend or damage the pin terminals. W iring! CAUTION: Equipment Damage Hazard. Disconnect all power supplies before wiring connections are made. Check all wiring connections before applying power to the system. Short-circuited or improperly connected wires will result in permanent damage to the equipment. Figure 8: Wiring the Junction Box The M100Q does not require shielded cable on runs less than 50 ft (15 m). Avoid running low voltage sensor wiring in the same conduit as line voltage wiring, 24 VAC wiring, or other conductors that supply highly inductive loads (contactors, coils, generators, etc.) Use shielded cable if the control wiring is longer than 50 ft (15 m), located in a common conduit, or near inductive loads. Use 22 AWG, Beldfoil 8761 or an equivalent for runs up to 250 ft (76 m). For runs of 250 to 500 ft (76 to 152 m), use 18 AWG, Beldfoil 8760 or an equivalent. Connect the shield to Terminal T1 (Common) only. To connect the wiring: 1. Use a hammer and punch to push the plug out of one of the access holes. 2. Install the conduit connector (not provided) to the actuator, and secure it using the conduit nut provided with the connector. 3. Connect the sensor to Terminals S1 and S2 located in the wiring compartment. (See Figure 9.) 4 M100Q Series Proportional Actuator with R81Q Controller Board Installation Bulletin

Figure 6 shows a wiring configuration, and Table 1 shows the location of the wiring terminals. Refer to the M100Q Series Proportional Actuator with R81Q Controller Board for Thermistor Sensor Applications Application Note (LIT ) for more specific wiring information. Table 1: Wiring Terminals Terminal T1 T2 S1 S2 X XD XR Description Power Common 24 VAC Power Thermistor Sensor (Common) Thermistor Sensor Direct Acting (DA) or Reverse Acting (RA) Input DA Output RA Output 8 Slave Actuator 10 Slave Actuator A djustments Travel Travel is field adjustable from 65 to 270 with the travel potentiometer located on the R81Q terminal board. (See Figure 9.) Adjusting the potentiometer affects the CW limit of the actuator s rotation. (The CCW limit is not adjustable.) Refer to the appropriate valve or damper linkage literature for more information on travel adjustment. 1. Apply 24 VAC to Terminal T1 (Common) and Terminal T2. 2. Run the actuator to its CW limit by jumpering Terminals 8 and T1. 3. Turn the travel potentiometer CW to increase travel and CCW to decrease travel. Action DA Output A jumper is factory installed between Terminals X and XD for DA output. (See Figure 9.) An increase in temperature at the sensor causes an increase in the output signal, resulting in CW rotation of the actuator output shaft. Turn the setpoint knob to a setting below the sensed temperature to simulate an increase in temperature. The actuator s load end output shaft will rotate CW. Turn the setpoint knob to a setting above the sensed temperature, and it will rotate CCW. RA Output Remove the jumper from Terminal XD, and connect it to Terminal XR for RA output. A decrease in temperature at the sensor will increase the output signal. Turn the setpoint knob to a setting above the sensed temperature to simulate a decrease in temperature, and the actuator s output shaft will rotate CW. Turn the setpoint knob to a setting below the sensed temperature, and it will rotate CCW. Setpoint An internal setpoint adjustment for the remote sensor is located on the R81Q terminal board. (See Figure 6). Proportional Band IMPORTANT: If the actuator cannot maintain a stable position, increase the proportional band. Do not allow the actuator to oscillate, which could shorten the actuator s life. The proportional band adjustment (shown in Figure 9) controls the amount of change in the sensor temperature required to drive the actuator between the zero position and full stroke. (See Figure 10.) It is adjustable between 2 and 30 F (1 and 17 C). Make field adjustments with the system in operation. M100Q Series Proportional Actuator with R81Q Controller Board Installation Bulletin 5
