William Klein From June, 17 th to September, 11 th 2016, Palazzo della Ragione Fotografia in Milan will be hosting the exhibition William Klein: il mondo a modo suo (The world his way) tracing the American photographer's articulated artistic career, that began over 60 years ago in Milan. Innovative and transgressive genius of international photography, in his life William Klein has worked in any field, from graphics to painting, from photography and cinema to writing. The exhibition, edited by Alessandra Mauro, promoted and produced by the City of Milan/Cultura, Palazzo della Ragione, Civita, Contrasto and GAmm Giunti, with the patronage of the US General Consulate in Milan, presents more than 150 original works, some in large format, all taken from the photographer's own archive. Furthermore, the visitor will find new installations specifically designed for this exhibition, along with a selection of Klein's clips, gigantographies and a selection of films he directed. The set up is realized by Migliore + Servetto Architects.

2 The exhibition is divided into nine sections, leading the visitor on a route all over the cities photographed by William Klein in his entire career, and the different means of expression he exploited. The exhibition starts with the Early works, abstract paintings made by the American photographer when he still belonged to the hard edge painting style, characterized by sudden and sharp geometric contrasts between different colour areas. In Milan Klein began to act as an experimental and conceptual artist. The exhibition moves then to the section dedicated to New York, an extraordinary visual narration of Klein's city and one of the most important works in the history of photography. After New York, we have Rome, whose images show us Klein's survey, together with Fellini, Pasolini and Moravia, between 1956 and Two large sections are dedicated to Tokyo and Moscow, other cities Klein made subject of his books. We get then to the story of Paris, the city where Klein's been living for several years. The exhibition continues with the section dedicated to Fashion, a field where Klein is recognized as a great innovator. During his career, Klein made also several Painted Contact Sheets, where the mix of painting and photography is reflected in the artist's gesture when he chooses, among the various proofs, the image to enlarge: he surrounds it with strong and unique graphic signs. The exhibition ends with a room dedicated to Cinema, where a 30-minute excerpt is played from the main movies Klein directed. Catalogue Contrasto - GAmm Giunti. William Klein: il mondo a modo suo enriches the exhibition program of Palazzo della Ragione Fotografia and follows the line of the monographic exhibitions dedicated to the great players of international photography, such as Sebastião Salgado, Walter Bonatti, Edward Burtynsky, Herb Ritts, and the project Italia Inside Out. William Klein. biography William Klein was born in New York in 1928, from a Jewish family of Hungarian origins. At the age of 18 he spent two years in the army, and then settled in Paris to become a painter. In 1954 he returned to New York and worked at a photographic diary that was released two years later as a book depicted by himself, Life is Good & Good for You in New York. With this book, Klein won the Prix Nadar. He then joined Fellini in Rome to become his assistant. At the end of the 1950s Klein approached cinema, and to this art he exclusively focused his work for some years. In the 1980s he got back to photography, publishing many books. His works are

3 exhibited around the world and received many awards and recognitions. Countless are the works, books, projects carried out by this versatile and tireless artist.
