1 The Health & Human Services Academy at offers a broad course selection within a rigorous academic program. This program offers students the opportunity to participate in course work as well as activities that enhance their understanding and experiences of the various professional opportunities in the fields of Child Development, Carpentry, Electricity, Nutrition & Food Sciences, and JROTC. Magnet Transportation Information: Academy (Southwest Area) Transportation is provided for students who are zoned to attend high schools in the Northwest or Southwest areas. Magnet Showcase Event: Thursday, October 15, p.m. Meet our teachers and students while viewing demonstrations and hands on activities. Learn about all of the academy programs, clubs, sports and other activities at Assessment Guidelines Assessment Date: Tuesday, January 12, 2016 All Assessments by Appointment to be scheduled between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. Individual assessment appointments must be scheduled no later than 12/11/15. Schedule your appointment online at or call the Magnet Office at (NOT BOTH). Unforeseen Illness or Emergency: Parent(s) must inform BOTH the school and Magnet Office immediately if the applicant cannot attend or complete the scheduled assessment due to an unforeseen illness or emergency. Please be aware that assessments will not be rescheduled without documentation verifying the illness or emergency. Inclement Weather Date: Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at the previously scheduled appointment time Inclement Weather: In the event that school activities are cancelled due to inclement weather, magnet assessments will be postponed. Postponed assessments will occur on the designated inclement weather date. 2 In preparation for the Assessment Day students must complete the following: Complete the Applicant Self-Evaluation. Applicants are required to complete a trifold brochure project that demonstrates interest in the program prior to coming to the assessment. See page 5 for project requirements. Schedule an Assessment: Individual assessment appointments must be scheduled no later than 12/11/15. Schedule your appointment online at or call the Magnet Office at (NOT BOTH). On the Day of the Assessment The assessment takes approximately 60 minutes Business dress is recommended for applicants It is the responsibility of the parent(s) to: ensure that the applicant attends the assessment on the scheduled date and time. contact the schools if scheduled magnet assessment appointments conflict. Failure to attend an assessment WILL result in disqualification. Applicants will participate in a 3 part evaluation process. This includes a demonstration of interest project due upon arrival on the assessment night, a personal interview, and an essay to be written on site. The three parts of the evaluation process are described as follows: NOTE: Interviewers will not provide any type of feedback to the students and parents. Project - Brochure Applicants will create a trifold brochure details and requirements are on page 5. Interview Students will participate in a personal interview with a member of our academy staff. Students should be prepared to answer questions regarding their career/future goals and personal qualities- see page 6 for details. NOTE: Interviewers will not provide any type of feedback to the students and parents. Essay Applicants will read a short prompt on goal setting and create a well-written, error free, three paragraph essay that describes how their educational choice to attend will impact their future goals and endeavors. Assessment Guidelines

3 Registration Information Applicants participate in an interview, submit their demonstration of interest project, and write an essay on-site on January 12, 2016 between the hours of 3:30-5:30 p.m. Individual assessment appointments must be scheduled no later than 12/11/15. Schedule your appointment online at or call the Magnet Office at (NOT BOTH). Applicants should be accompanied by at least one parent. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time. Applicants will register for the audition in the front lobby. On average, the entire audition takes approximately 60 minutes. Parents must stay during the assessment. Seating and refreshments will be available in the school for parents. If the applicant cannot attend or complete the scheduled assessment due to an unforeseen illness or emergency, please contact at (410) and contact the Office of Magnet Programs at (410) Please be aware that assessments will not be rescheduled without documentation verifying the illness or emergency. Assessment Description Please make sure to come prepared with your COMPLETED Demonstration of interest Project-trifold brochure. On the day of the assessment, applicants will turn in their project, take part in an interview, and write an essay. The essay prompt will be provided on site. See the following pages (pg. 5& pg. 6) for instructions and guidelines. The interview and demonstration of interest project-trifold brochure will be scored using a standard rubric. Applicants may not take any notes or prepared responses into the assessment. Documented testing accommodations, as appropriate to the assessment, will be provided. 5 Academy of Health and Human Services Demonstration of Interest Description and Guidelines Please bring the completed project to the interview session. Do not submit project with your BCPS magnet application. Projects will not be forwarded to. Directions: The applicant must create an 8 ½ x 11 Brochure that tells us about the applicant, their goals at Lansdowne high school, and their accomplishments. Please use the layout below. You must pick one pathway: Either Child Care, Food and Nutrition Science, JROTC, Carpentry or Electricity Follow the exact outline provided on the following two pages. 6 Academy of Health and Human Services INTERVIEW PREPARATION DOCUMENT C Be prepared to elaborate in detail on the following topics. You will be graded on your ability to elaborate with details using well-constructed sentences and grammar. Your responses should be clear and use appropriate volume. Your responses should remain on topic. It is strongly recommended that you prepare and practice for this interview. You may not use any prepared notes unless it is a part of your official accommodations. 1. The pathway you are interested in pursuing. Pick one of the following pathways: a. Child Care b. Food and Nutrition Science c. JROTC d. Carpentry e. Electricity 2. Your motivation for applying to LHS and three benefits of attending LHS. 3. Your planned involvement in sports, clubs, or student organizations at LHS and how your traits will contribute. 4. Three careers you have considered for yourself at least one related to your chosen pathway and at least one not directly related to your chosen pathway. 5. Hypothetically, if you were not accepted into any magnet school and had to attend your zoned high school, how would you react? How would you adjust your plans for high school? 1. 7 COURSE TRACKING STRUCTURE/CAREER PATHWAYS Child Care Services This is a CTE (Career & Technology Education) sponsored curriculum. Nutrition & Foods This is a CTE (Career & Technology Education) sponsored curriculum. Careers This is a CTE (Career & Technology Education) sponsored curriculum JROTC Army students for careers in Child Care Services & Early Childhood Education. Students who fulfill all requirements and internship are eligible for their 90 hour child care certificate. students for careers in the culinary arts. Carpentry students for careers in construction and contracting. Electricity students for careers in electricity and contracting. students for careers in leadership and military service. Students are not required to enlist in the military but those who choose to will enlist at an advanced rank. Courses include: Child Development 1 & 2 Nutrition & Food Decisions & Family Living 1 credit Internship Courses include: Nutrition & Food Food Prep Food Science 2 credit Internship Courses include: Carpentry I IV Carpentry Internship Electricity I IV Electricity Internship Courses include: JROTC 1-4 Students are also encouraged to take an upper level language. Criteria Magnet Program s Criteria C average(1.5 or better) in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies Satisfactory Attendance (94% or higher) Performance on Interest Essay Demonstration of Interest Performance on Interview Magnet Assessment Date On January 12, 2016, all applicants will be required to attend the assessment held at. Applicants will be contacted with a specific date and time for the assessment. All applicants should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to their scheduled time. Applicants should be accompanied by at least one parent. (Inclement weather date: January 19, 2016) Placement Prior to the Lottery According to Superintendent s Rule 6400, at the high school level where the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of available seats, up to 20% of the seats may first be filled with candidates who show exceptional commitment and promise in the specialized program as evidenced by their performance on the approved magnet assessment(s). The remaining seats will be filled using the centralized random lottery selection process from the remaining pool of qualified applicants. Qualifying for The applicant must earn at least 80 points from the stated criteria in order to qualify for admission. How to Calculate Your Grade Average Convert your marking period grades to points (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, E=0). Then divide by the number of marking periods. Subject 1 st marking pd.
