1 2014 CALL FOR PAPERS 18 th ICABR Conference June 18-20, 2014 Nairobi, Kenya Bioeconomy and Development The Organizing Committee of the 18 th ICABR Conference invites the submission of abstracts, and session proposals addressing the theme: Bioeconomy and Development. The European Commission has defined the bioeconomy as consisting of. the production of renewable biological resources and the conversion of these resources and waste streams into value added products, such as food, feed, bio-based products and bioenergy. The bioeconomy is playing a major role in the development of both wealthy and poor countries. Food security is a central challenge for countries throughout the world and especially so in Africa and Asia. Energy is an essential component of economic growth and human welfare. Agriculture, food, and energy can make major contributions to economic growth of all countries but especially in Africa and other developing economies where agriculture is a major employer and an important component of the economy. Many new technologies based on advances in the biological sciences have been proposed as key components of the bioeconomy and improved food security such as Green Revolution technologies, including genetically engineered plants and vaccines. Using food and biomass to produce biofuels and bioenergy are controversial in both developed and developing countries, but need to be considered. Alternative technologies such as organic agriculture and sustainable intensification have also been proposed. The purpose of ICABR is to bring together scholars and decision makers in a non-confrontational environment where the latest research on the impact of and appropriate role of these technologies in development and the policies that influence their application and impact can be discussed. We hope to provide policy makers with research that can facilitate their decision making. This meeting typically includes scholars from the social and biological sciences from around the world to share their knowledge about the applications of new agricultural technologies, policies and institutions. The Organizing Committee welcomes abstracts for individual presentations and panel sessions addressing the role of the bioeconomy in development and the policies that influence the growth and direction of the bioeconomy. The committee is particularly interested in proposals on the Bioeconomy in Africa but welcomes proposals on any part of the world. Presentations and panels can focus on topics including: empirical results of research on any component of the bioeconomy in wealthy or developing countries; conceptual and empirical research on the social, economic, legal and management aspects of the bio-economy; evidence on the effectiveness of policies, investments in research and development, and institutions in stimulating growth of the bioeconomy and limiting negative externalities; how climate change will impact the bioeconomy; and the analysis of bioeconomy policy and program supports. As research on the bioeconomy is a work in progress, we are looking for original research methods and creative new research directions relating to our general theme. The Organizing Committee also invites proposals for satellite workshops organized before or after the Conference dates. Workshop can be half day or full day sessions, with the aim of highlighting ideas or works-in-progress on a specific topic. Workshops may involve panel discussions of prepared questions, debates, roundtable meetings, or other formats. They may offer discussions of policy

2 issues, research methods, emerging research results, teaching or outreach topics, issues in professional organization, or other matters. Proposals should include: session title, session rationale, names and contact information for the organizer and planned participants, as well as a description of the workshop format that include plans for discussion. 3 ICABR s Pre-Conference PhD Workshop on Theoretical Models, Empirical Methods, and Data Collection for Analyzing the Bioeconomy ICABR 2014 will hold Pre-Conference PhD Workshop on Theoretical Models, Empirical Methods, and Data Collection for Analyzing the Bioeconomy which will take place in Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi on June 17, 2014.The workshop aims to bring together academics, policy makers, and senior researchers which will inspire young researchers to take up comparative projects as early as possible in their careers and to contribute to creating networks between participants and research institutions/universities working in the field of the bioeconomy. The workshop will provide advanced training to young graduate researchers, through specialized lectures at the highest international level by drawing upon experts top-ranked in research at the frontiers of the Bioeconomy. Lectures will include theoretical, practical and policy-oriented presentations. Young researchers will also have the opportunity to present their own work and receive constructive feedback from experts in the field as well as from peers. Technical presentations will be alternated with general advice and discussions about getting a PhD, doing research, and post-doctoral careers. We invite applications from PhD students at any stage of their doctoral studies. PhD workshop papers describe on-going thesis work in 10 pages. Those starting their PhDs should describe the problem they focus on, explain why it is important, detail why the existing solutions are not sufficient, and give an outline of the research strategy pursued. Those in the middle of their PhD, or close to completion, are expected to describe the specific contribution of their PhD project in more detail. For all applicants, PhD workshop paper proposals should include a one-page biography of the presenter. A maximum number of 6 PhD workshop papers will be selected by ICABR program committee. The best research paper presented at the Pre-Conference Workshop will receive the ICABR Young Scientists Award. The award committee includes Hans Binswanger, Carl Pray, Sara Savastano, Justus Wesseler and David Zilberman. PhD students can either apply as presenters of a PhD workshop paper, or as non-presenting participants, and/or submit a paper or poster proposal for presentation at the ICABR conference.
