Stay up to date with the latest developments of aerodyn Energiesysteme GmbH Dear customers and business friends This year starts off with some news about aerodyn, following a jubilee last year for aerodyn. Thirty years have passed since its foundation in 1983, years which have seen many changes in the company and the wind energy sector. Look forward to the book, available soon, that relates this story in word and pictures. Management has positioned itself anew to carry this story on into the future. Markus Rees and Rainer Osthorst, both with aerodyn for more than 20 years, have taken over management. The Hyosung 5 MW turbine is the third large offshore wind turbine developed by aerodyn and is now put into service. Two further new turbines for other clients will follow within this year. Existing turbine types of various clients also receive our attention as we are presently in the process of increasing rotor sizes, presenting cost optimizations and re-issuing certifications. We have extended our services in the field of design and calculation and now offer our clients analysis of aeroelastic behavior, simulation of typhoon loads and fracture mechanics analyses. Rainer Osthorst General Manager aerodyn receives A-design assessment for aerodynblade ae To be continued on page 2
The 68 m long ae rotor blade is the newest member of the successful aerodynblade license blade family. It is designed for a 5 MW turbine in a TC2B environment. At the end of 2013 the certification body issued the Design Assessment Type A after completing a thorough assessment of the design documentation and analysis of the required blade tests. The first blade set as well as the test blade were manufactured at a renowned blade manufacturer in China and transported by ship to Korea. In the last newsletter we already reported about the successful blade test. Installation of the blades and the rotor was the last step in the aeromaster 5.0 installation. Hyosung Corporation installs aeromaster 5.0 prototype on Jeju Island, Korea The aeromaster 5.0 offshore wind turbine developed by aerodyn was fully installed on 24 February Hyosung Corporation, the Korean power and industrial systems company and wind turbine manufacturer, installed the prototype on Jeju Island south of the Korean peninsula. The wind turbine with a rotor diameter of 139 m and a rated power of 5 MW has a high-speed drive train with a medium voltage generator. The turbine was developed incorporating the well-proven aeromaster drive train concept. The aeromaster 5.0 is already the third 5 MW offshore wind turbine from aerodyn. A second prototype of the 5 MW turbine will be installed during the course of this year by a Chinese manufacturer. Close cooperation between aerodyn and its customers in South Korea and China allowed for successful completion of the development project within three years from first studies to installation of the prototype. The well-prepared Hyosung team managed the straightforward installation, even though work had been delayed due to historical findings in a cave at the site and unfavourable weather conditions. Page 2 of 7
Helipad for offshore aeromaster 5.0 turbine One recent innovation presented by aerodyn is the helipad for its 5 MW aeromaster offshore turbine. Due to severe maritime weather conditions offshore turbines are often hard to reach for maintenance personnel and material. Boat access may be limited by wave heights and strong currents while helicopter access is still possible. Nowadays many offshore turbines possess a Helicopter Hoist Platform. This means a small platform on top of the turbine nacelle, onto which personnel and material can be roped down from the hovering helicopter. The helipad innovation is a platform mounted on the rear end of the nacelle that enables the helicopter to land short-time. This way quicker and, above all, safer access to the turbine is provided, also for personnel without special training. Furthermore loading and unloading of tools and maintenance material becomes safer and easier. The helipad approach has many advantages for the safety concept of the turbine. Also the prototype of another aerodyn design, the SCD 6.0 MW, will be set up in 2014 equipped with a helipad. Stability simulation aerodyn uses methods typically used in the field of rotor dynamics and aerospace engineering. These include the full aeroelastic linking of the rotor blades as well as the effects of rotation on the vibrational modes of the whole turbine. The aim is to determine the stability of these vibrational modes within the whole range of operational states and to exclude the risk of destructive instabilities. Such instabilities are motions which lead to a rapid transfer of energy from the air stream to the blade structure, known as flutter or divergence. In contrast to the commonly used time domain analyses, these frequency domain methods provide a more profound understanding of the physical phenomena. The risk of flutter is known to arise with increasing blade length, weight and flexibility. Page 3 of 7
aeromaster 2.5 turbine now available in two 110 m rotor diameter versions The aeromaster 2.5 turbine which has 3 licensees worldwide is in a permanent process of further development and of qualification of new suppliers. Besides the aerodynblades with diameters up to 118 m, now two different blades manufactured in China with 110 m diameter based on non-aerodyn designs have been qualified for use on the aeromaster 2.5 MW turbine. The new blades are: Sinoma 53.8 TMT 53.8 Both blades are 53.8 m long and have a 2.3 m blade root diameter. The turbine version with 110 m diameter has been designed for TC3A wind conditions. The blades can be purchased in China at an attractive price level. Further information about Sinoma and TMT blades: Change in management As of 1st January 2014, engineers Markus Rees and Rainer Osthorst are Managing Directors of aerodyn Energiesysteme GmbH. The former Managing Director Sönke Siegfriedsen will remain a partner in the company. Markus Rees has been working at aerodyn in the field of turbine simulation and load calculation for 20 years, the management of which he assumed in the course of these years. As project manager, he was in charge of the development of new turbines and has been responsible for marketing for many years together with the former Managing Director Sönke Siegfriedsen. Markus Rees has been a partner and authorized signatory in aerodyn Energiesysteme for eight years. Rainer Osthorst by now looks back on more than 20 years of active life at aerodyn. His professional expertise focuses on the finite element calculations of rotor blades and cast iron components. He is also qualified as a business economist and controller and has been responsible for finances and organization for more than 10 years. Rainer Osthorst has been a partner and authorized signatory in aerodyn Energiesysteme for eight years. To be continued on page 5
aerodyn Energiesysteme is the leading engineering firm for the design of innovative wind turbines in line with market requirements. For 30 years, aerodyn has been designing rotor blades, control systems, drive trains and complete wind turbines. An experienced team of engineers is ready to assist our clients, from the concept to detailed design right up to commissioning and support during series production. More than 10% of all systems installed worldwide to date were developed by aerodyn Energiesysteme. We look forward to implementing innovations with you in the future as well. Typhoon simulation software tool In an average year, around 80 tropical cyclones are observed in the tropical and subtropical latitudes. About 35% of them occur in the Northwest Pacific. Tropical cyclones endanger man and material goods, especially during the summer and late summer. Water masses striking land and rainfall of an intensity almost unknown in our temperate zones as well as extreme wind speeds that outdo European gales by far cause extensive damage. For these reasons, great interest is shown in understanding more about the physical phenomena in a tropical cyclone. In China in particular, production of electrical energy with wind turbines has reached economic dynamics that for some years has been putting local European development way in the shade. However, continuation of this success demands wind turbines whose design can withstand a tropical cyclone. Already three years ago, aerodyn, in close cooperation with a leading German wind energy research institute, started working on a wind model for tropical cyclones. The beginning of the project was dedicated to collecting, examining and processing high-resolution measured data on tropical cyclones of the last few years from Asia and the Pacific. Based on these data, risk maps on the frequency of a tropical cyclone in Asia were first created. These maps are the basis for estimation of the typhoon class at the planned turbine site. In a second step, a model was developed based on a non-gaussian wind distribution that is capable of depicting turbulence and an increased occurrence of peak winds. The model generates high-resolution turbulence time series that can be used directly for load calculation. The entire development phase of the wind model was supervised by Germanischer Lloyd to ensure the best possible conformity with directives. Germanischer Lloyd has confirmed that the model can be used for calculation of a tropical cyclone. Page 5 of 7
Upcoming new book: aerodyn s first thirty years In 2013 one of the pioneering enterprises in the wind sector celebrated its 30th jubilee. In such a long history there are certainly a lot of stories and anecdotes to tell. Please look forward to first-hand accounts of thirty years of business in the wind sector, ranging from the pioneering days of garage-tinkered prototypes to today s optimized multi-megawatt series turbines. Mr. Sönke Siegfriedsen, one of the veterans of wind energy, is currently completing the last lines of this literary work. aerodyn participates in World Future Energy Summit 2014 in Abu Dhabi In January 2014 aerodyn participated in the World Future Energy Summit 2014 in Abu Dhabi. This event has steadily grown during recent years and in 2014 the fair and the congress counted over 28,000 professional visitors. Our aerodyn booth inside the German pavilion was much frequented by people from all branches of the wind business. We had many inspiring and interesting discussions with potential customers. The new 2 MW low-wind version of our aeromaster turbine with a 120 m rotor received particular interest. Page 6 of 7
