3 Introduction Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists providing a diverse range of professional services to clients. We have more than 11,000 staff working in 90 offices in 38 countries. The firm is the creative and inspirational force behind many of the world s most innovative and sustainable planning, building and infrastructure projects. Our Advanced Technology and Research practice specialises in the development of innovative, practical and cost-effective solutions to complex engineering problems. Our team undertakes design, advanced numerical simulation, testing and product development in a in a wide range of industries including manufacturing, automotive, railway, nuclear, building and civil engineering. 3

5 Why Arup? Arup is renowned for solving the most complex engineering problems and has been involved in creating some of the most challenging structures around the world. Arup s Advanced Technology and Research practice has a proven track record in providing consultancy services to projects in a range of sectors, transferring technological understanding that is traditional in one area to improve methods and techniques in another. We have worked with composites since the 1970s and our consulting services are underpinned by specialist knowledge of advanced simulation, software development and materials science. Advanced numerical analysis is central to much of our work, and to keep our capabilities at the leading edge we have a team of software engineers developing new methods and features for our analysis and visualisation software. Our software products enable Arup s engineers to push the boundaries of what is possible in composite design whilst simultaneously improving efficiency. Our philosophy is that everything in the engineering environment relies on the selection and use of the most appropriate materials. Our independent, experienced materials experts will always develop the most suitable solution for the problem. 5

6 Consultancy and analysis We combine our strong history of engineering consultancy with material science expertise and 25 years of pioneering experience in software development to provide industry-leading design and analysis. Our experienced engineers can provide expert advice from the technical to the practical. We offer a number of services relating to composites, from design, specification and analysis to construction, dynamics and failure investigations. We have experience of a wide variety of applications of composite materials including automotive, maritime, aerospace, buildings, bridges, sculptures, boats, facades, offshore and moving structures. We work closely with a number of academic institutes which ensures we stay at the forefront of composite technologies. Our global team combines their skills and knowledge bringing a wealth of international experience to any project. 6

8 Software development At the heart of our consultancy service are our software tools. Developed and used in-house by our experienced engineers they are continually improved to support the most advanced engineering challenges. Tools developed by our software team for finite element analysis improve workflow efficiency. Use Oasys PRIMER to build and check your model, including: R rapid definition of ply orientation checking of fibre directions setting up material data and failure parameters defining boundary conditions Use the industry-leading LS-DYNA solver for a number of analysis types such as: static transient vibration failure Look at results in a graphical or time-history format using Oasys D3PLOT and Oasys T/HIS: look at complete state or time history results animate stress, strain and user-defined data view results on a per-ply basis visualise failure mechanisms Use the optimisation tool, LS-OPT for: 8 design of experiments (DOE) materials parameter fitting stochastic analysis multidisciplinary design optimisation (MDO)

10 Project experience Arup Skiff Development of the Arup Skiff combined our abilities in composite materials, product design and innovative business models with a personal passion for sailing and boat building. We used design, analysis and manufacturability skills to develop the Arup Skiff from the latest UK-Cherub boat to compete in the competition to find a new women s sailing boat for the 2016 Olympics. bureau SLA 2009 IJmuiden Sculpture, Netherlands We designed and analysed this 10m tall reed sculpture. Our work included a study to determine the most appropriate foundation mechanism which would consist of a number of stacked springs with increasing stiffness to deal with winds of increasing strengths. The reed itself was designed as a hollow glass fibre cylinder following a dynamic and wind analysis of the structure. Reverie Limited Reverie Composite Car Seat Arup optimised the design of this lightweight carbon fibre seat for racing use. The seat incorporates a composite layup efficiently designed for strength, safety and low mass, achieved through optimised material placement. Our analysis techniques allowed changes to geometry and laminate lay-up to be explored without committing to physical tests, reducing prototypes and costs. Foster & Partners Canary Wharf Crossrail Station Arup provided materials advice for a platform edge screen at Canary Wharf Crossrail station. We conducted the specification and testing of the phenolic glass reinforced panels being used as alternative to the conventional concrete panels. This innovative material has impressive fire and electricity resistent properties which adhere to the stringent performance requirements. Dennis Gilbert / VIEW John Nye Chanel Travelling Pavilion Optimising the design of this unique structure required Arup s engineering and 3D modelling capability and knowledge of innovative materials such as ETFE cushions. The 700m 2 temporary exhibition building, inspired by the shape of a Chanel handbag, toured the world and had to be designed to be dismantled into shipping containers and completely re-erected within five days. Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol During renovation work at this major arts venue localised strengthening of existing slabs was required adjacent to new openings. Arup s innovative solution used bonded carbon fibre to reduce programme and construction costs by eliminating temporary propping. We used carbon fibre strips bonded by adhesive to provide the additional reinforcement required. 10
